END OF BORDER CONTROLS: Police Criticize Faeser's Decision! Arguments for Extension
The heightened border controls introduced for the European Football Championship at the borders with Denmark and the Benelux countries will not be extended. Starting this Friday, spot checks will resume as announced by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. However, Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has ordered additional temporary controls at the German-French border to ensure security before and during the Paris Olympics in cooperation with French authorities. These controls will be registered with the EU "shortly." The games will begin on July 26 and end on August 11. Border controls at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Poland will continue to limit irregular migration and combat smuggling crimes. These controls are temporary, lasting until December 15 for Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Poland, and until November 11 for Austria. During the European Championship, thousands of illegal entries were prevented, numerous smugglers were temporarily arrested, and hundreds of open warrants were executed. The Ministry will present a full report on Monday morning, one day after the Championship final.
