The British Empire was over in 1942. When Singapore fell, Australia announced that it would now fight under the US banner, not British, and Gandhi launched the Quit India revolt. Like a patient in an ICU, the Empire struggled to stay alive. 1956 meant the final end. Which was good for the British people also. The Empire was esstentially for the British upper class. I believe Britain was reborn when it shed its Empire. Palaces are not homes. The country which has given the world Shakespeare and Newton has an important role to play.

I think a fair analogy would be that it is OK for the UK government to nationalise the coal mines and railways but it is not OK for the Egyptian government to nationalise the Suez Canal (for which it paid the full price as per the shares quoted on the Paris Bourse).

You know the Egyptians could never have built that, right? All of the technology Africa uses was made by westerners and the Africans are too stupid to understand where it came from so they think its theirs.

This program completely ignores the diplomatic work of Canadian Lester B. Pearson (later Liberal Prime Minister) in settling the Suez Crisis. It was he who proposed a novel out for the French and British -- a United Nations peacekeeping force to monitor the canal zone. His work was rewarded with the Nobel Peace Prize.

the monitoring Force in Suez; UNEF 1 was a missed opportunity. It was hoped by the UN leaders in the 60s that the force would form the basis of a quick reaction force, based in Palermo that could respond to any global crisis, thus negating the time-consuming need of assembling different UN nation troops. Unfortunately, the occupation of Gaza and Suez by Israel in the Six Day War 1967, captured all of UNEF 1s equipment and the idea of a UN QRF died with it.

UN peacekeeping's track record over the years is mixed at best and a joke at worst. All sending in peace keepers did during the Suez crisis was delay war by another 10 years.

Very little in the video about Israel's motivations. According to Wikipedia, "Peres claimed that Nasser was a genocidal maniac intent upon not only destroying Israel, but also exterminating its people, and as such, Israel wanted a war before Egypt received even more Soviet weapons, and there was still a possibility of victory for the Jewish state." Now this may or may not have been true, but it certainly recasts matters from the sympathetic portrayal of Nasser in this documentary.

@@cjgangi0123This was not the reason. The reason was that the British knew how to deal with a communist insurgency, they prosecuted one of the only effective examples of it in Malaya, modern day Malaysia. Americas approach was shall we say; different. Wilson knew the American approach guaranteed an imbroglio of extreme magnitude. And Johnson hated him for it.

My grandad James Giles was one of the occupiers of Egypt in the 50s lol he tells me about his time there often it’s very interesting and he says he regrets it because he found out later he was simply there to promote the the Suez Canal which belonged to the Rothschild family and his being there had nothing to do with helping Britain and was actually against Britain’s interests as it was all done on borrowed money and increased the countries debt massively for the benefit of banksters just like Iraq Syria and Libya.

The take away from this series for any Brits watching this is that the Americans were not Britains friends in the post war period and did all they could to dismantle British inflhence globally.

He received a Botched Surgery to remove a Bile Duct, and Gallstones years earlier. It still hurt him some 30 years afterwards and so he couldn't sit still in a chair for very long. He was heavily addicted to both Uppers and Downers at both the same time. By the time of the Suez Crisis, he was suffering from both Paranoia, and Hallucinations.

We brought technology, medicine, civil service, banned slavery globally and atleast tried to remove customs and practices which were barbaric dragging some societies into the 20th century (prime example was the Hindu practice of Suttee/Sati - if you don't know what this was look it up.) Yes we did evil, but its fair to say the world would be a far worse place if Britain never had its empire.

Mena/Barmer was southern Egyptian not Ethiopian and till this day the northern region is different from the southern region in terms of demographics. The northern part of Egypt has always been Mediterranean/Caucasian while the southern parts of Egypt look darker but still aren't Sub-Saharan. The Ethiopians are actually Arabs from Yemen and most east Africans are half west Asian

Well about 90% of all inventions and technology is western so I really don’t think Egypt is particularly impressive. It’s true they were very impressive in their time but their success only paved the way for the real successful states in Europe and America
