The O'Kellys

Күн бұрын

Our final days crossing the Atlantic on the Outremer 55 Moonshot were spent dodging thunderstorms and motoring the last couple hundred miles to the British Virgin Islands. Not the glorious ending we were all expecting, but when the wind leaves your sails flogging, you still have to move forward. We set our course in a new direction.
If you’re looking to do a crewed charter in the British Virgin Islands, we highly recommend Joe and Holly on Knot 5280 - www.knot5280.com

I walked through Moonshot yesterday in Miami and it looked pretty beat up. I don't think they did much to clean her up, and it looks like someone was still living on it. The staff were quite nice, but maybe a little harried. The interior felt much larger than I expected. I could see how the 55 would be a good option for a pair of world travelers who are into dropping miles behind them, rather than just going island to island. It felt much larger than the 52 parked next to it.

I am so glad you're feeling better! I 100% loved what Nick said about differences and respecting dissenting opinions... it's one thing I feel is really missing in our society anymore... an ability to disagree and still be friends. =-) I'm really sorry it didn't work out with Outremmer. I confess, I was really curious what the strings were on that deal, but was so happy for you, and now I'm sad that it didn't work out. And, you're 1000% the viewers have no idea how much they give to us with the comments and support. How wonderful that you found a safe haven with such lovely people!!! Enjoy! Companies spend millions on advertisement so I would think having their product out there with folks like you is a huge plus. Sad to see it didn't work out, but as you said it is probably for the best. Cheers to both of you and your friends.

The deal with SLV was a discount of "the cost to market the boat", they also helped arrange the finance. Riley and Elayna still own the Outremer 45. Jack, Riley's cousin charters the boat. They both benefitted from the arrangement, Outremer got a ton of exposure and SLV got a great cat - and at a bit of a discount. Outremer builds great boats, that 55 is pretty mind boggling :)

I really think you're going to find that you would have put yourselves in a position where you would have missed out on the opportunity you really are looking for. I love your channel; keep going. Actually, you may disagree, but this is fun. In a seemingly bad situation, My friend asked me, "Don't you hate this?" I replied, "No, it makes for fun memories. We'll get through it." People watch our videos....not just ours....they watch other sailing videos and they think hey that looks grand, let's do it! And they make huge decisions, like leaving their career, or selling their house and stuff, etc., etc., etc. And we obviously think that this lifestyle is amazing...the sacrifices are worth it...otherwise, why would we be looking for our fifth boat? Cruising is awesome! But.......BUT!>>>>....BUT....there are a lot of tough times too. It isn't one champagne sail after another to post-card beaches. So we feel a lot of responsibility to be as transparent and balanced as we possibly can be to depict what life is really like, what the experience is really like. If that is what transparency means, then yes, that's what you'll hopefully continue to see from us. Thank you for the well wishes. Cheers.

The O’Kelly’s know their stuff. So this is directed at those who comment hastily. From my own experience, let me bet on the following (just guessing!) : - Moonshot does not belong to Outremer. They would not carry that much dead cost on their books. - She most likely belongs to a leasing company, “the Lessor” - The “owner” would be an Australian who leases the boat for X years until he takes title. - Until the boat enters Australian waters, Sales Tax can be delayed and eventually reduced - Any lessor insists on full insurance coverage, for Boat Value and for Liability. - Liability insurance costs only about 1’500 USD for the North Atlantic, but this excludes US waters! - Liability coverage for US waters comes at a much higher cost, if you can get it. - Full insurance for the boat itself is about 1% of value for just European Waters, 2% for the North Atlantic with at most 2 weeks in US waters. (3% for me with unlimited European and US waters, excluding hurricane season). - If you want to stay in the Caribbean during the 6 months of hurricane season, you either pay through the nose or go insured. (My quote was: 1% of value, on top of regular insurance premium) - Moonshot is reportedly worth at least 2 Million US Dollars, before tax. - This means 60’000 USD at least of insurance per year, excluding hurricane season. - The above assuming that the boat is “100% Pleasure” (no paid crew, no paying passenger, no sponsorship or promotion income) - The insurance company and the lessor will want to see an official skippers’ license. - A serious country of registry will want to see an operator’s license from THAT country. Australia? - Both often insist on at least three crew members on passages (crossings over 300 NM). Crew of 2 if you show a vast experience, and get prior approval for each crossing. Best if both have a skipper’s license. In addition, the “Owner” (lessee) has the privilege of selecting the skipper, with approval needed from the Lessor and the Insurer. He would be expecting some compensation for wear and tear, and possibly buying an extension of warranty from the builder. He would logically impose limits on where, when and how to navigate. He may ask for being temporarily invited onboard at specific times and places, along with his guests. All this would be stipulated in the sub-leasing contract between the true owner (Lessor), the Lessee (apparent “owner” in Australia?) and the chosen operator (our favorite sailing couple). Finally, Outremer, as the builder, may wish to include clauses about promoting their brand, and safeguarding the boat reputation; but this might be the object of a separate contract. All together, many constraints, delays, costs and worries. OK if you are running a business, but not my cup of tea as a strictly “pleasure” sailor.

People, and companies don’t come to agreements all the time. You have to make the best decisions for yourself. It’s just that simple. They just couldn’t come to a mutually acceptable agreement, enough said. I didn’t get the idea anyone was placing blame. It’s interesting that some read that into the narrative.

If you want more insight to the O55, check out Cat Great Circle here on KZbin. They're 3/4 of the way through their circumnavigation as part of the guided tour sponsored by Outremer. Lots of good insight into the boat, sails and planning a voyage on such a boat. They don't get as much into systems and maintenance as Nick and some other channels, but if you're looking for someone with experience on the 55, they're a good place to start.

Your few episodes aboard were well on the way to doing 19:51 more to market an Outremer than years of La Vagabond and regardless of risk, there’s something called insurance to cover the downside. I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t personal. It certainly came across that way in the last few videos, and I was pretty sure this one was going to be a total “diss“ on out reamer. My biggest take away from this whole chapter just reinforces my attitude to “go with the flow” at all times when on a sailboat! 😉

Hey guys, so glad Nick had a safe passage across the pond. What a great experience. And so glad to see you guys back together, you are such peas in a pod😊. I just got back to Curacao after a month in Australia, it was an amazing trip through the Whitsundays with friends. Are you guys interested in doing a sail from Curacao to USVI in a couple weeks, I’d love to see you guys… I’ll dm you!

I love you guys and you’re not asking for my advice so let’s call it a wish. I wish for you guys to find a boat that you can compromise your desires for and accept with excitement.

Packing and unpacking, great way to put this episode. Never thought you and the captain had an issue, it's all about making the effort to have things work. Glad your finished-up and onto your next adventure. Appreciate your videos 👍

Thank you for showing the journey. Typical to your character, only honest and kind words. I am not sure I would have had the same reaction to the captain and his routing choices. Yet, I learned a great deal from the videos and your style of handling things. Glad Meagan is feeling better and with you! We are jumping on a plane to Portland and will give the city a wave for you. Blessings to all!

Nick, Megan.... just flick the🖕to Outremer and be on your way to living your "own" lives. So just go to the Moorings down there and pick out a late model Leopard 45 (Clarity Too), rig it out with all the off-grid stuff and go live your lives doing what you do best (which is really what we want to see you do), which is slow cruising and living life the easy way. All this fast stuff with drama while racing around the world is for the birds. You do you.... and we will follow your journey! You got this!!! 🤙

I made a comment about the skipper of Moonshot in the last video. Not that you guys appeared to be at odds, but that he was a numnuts for not listening to you! If you have a proper, credentialed weather guy on board, shouldn't you defer to him? RE: the falling apart of the Outremer arrangement. You guys seem to be the common factor in all of these negotiations falling apart. You've made offers on several boats, meaning you were very interested. And one by one you were unable to come to terms with the sellers. Now the Outremer negotiations have fallen apart. I'd love to see you guys back in a boat and doing what you love. Maybe time to be a bit more flexible?
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 8 ай бұрын
LOL. Speaking generally, no, we are not flexible and won't be in the future. No apology from us. The deals we have been involved with that have not gone through have fallen apart for various reasons. Sometimes we have been unwilling to compromise and other times the seller has not been willing to compromise. Regardless of your judgement, we know that the market is ALWAYS correct, and many of those boats are still for sale.

Got to say there are a lot of fickle, dodgy people selling boats…. makes buying a used car look like buying from a monk.
