In fact the loss of life was so bad that Gen. Pershing had to face a House Committee to explain why American soldiers had died taking ground they could have just walk onto after 11.00am. @33kaus holokaust Only in the first two years in the war by late 15 and even into mid 16 the idea of charging a position was seen as outdated. The Germans answered with their stormtrooper tactics, and the British began to develop early combined arms between tanks, arty, and infantry. Matter of fact the only country by 1918 that still used the mass attack on an entrenched position was the United States, since we choose not to accept advice from the British and French on how the tactics had changed.

In France, every village has its "monument to the fallen" with the names of WWI soldiers KIA engraved on it. A couple weeks ago, I was looking at such a monument (I often do), where the date was mentioned as well. There were maybe forty names on it. The last was dated December 10 1918 . I guess that he died from wounds he had sustained one month after the armistice. But the one before him was dated November 10 1918. Killed maybe not on the last minute, but on the last day of the war. It immediately made me think of this video. For the record, he was called Jean Guat.

When i was a young pastor I visited a man who had fought in WW1. He was dying and wanted forgiveness for killing a German soldier after the war had ended. He had startled the young German and the German charged him with a bayonet. The dying vet told me he chambered a round and fired point blank killing the young German. He remarked that the German had this look of shock as he stood for a moment and then fell backwards. The young German appeared to be perhaps 15 or 16. This American soldier had grieved the rest of his life thinking he should have parried and disarmed the young soldier, telling him the war had ended. Everyone who heard this story assured him he had done nothing wrong and encouraged him to let it go. However, as he lay dying in 1982, he still felt the guilt. So I shared a Scripture from 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." I encourged him to confess his sin but also embrace the forgiveness. He did and wept. Now I personally did not think he had done any wrong but HE DID!. So I tried to let him pass in peace. He did.

My Great Uncle was 17 when he enlisted in the US. Marines in 1917. He was a replacement machine gunner and apparently was very good and was chosen to demonstrate a new machine gun before President Wilson. His squad was rewarded with a ride on the Presidents yacht. According to letters other marines sent my great grandmother, on November 1st, 1918 he was shot in the hand but refused medical attention and remained at his machine gun post. A short time later, an artillery shell landed on their post killing 3 Marines (odd to think of U.S. Marines in France in WWI but they were there). Howard Jarrett was awarded 4 Bronze Battle Stars and 2 Silver Stars during his time in France. There is a book, "Decorated Marines of the Fourth Brigade in World War I" and he is on page 156. My great grandmother saved all his letters in a little wooden box along with her gold star armband as well as the telegram advising her of his death and the various certificates, commandant of the Marine Corps, General Pershing, and various French certificates. The marine corps thought the "IA" of Iowa abbreviation looked like "CA" (I could see it happening using a serif font and a bad typewriter ribbon) and sent his death telegram to Oakland California. Great Grandma started sending frantic telegrams when the war insurance office contacted her to pay out his life insurance policy and she hadn't heard from him in months. Eventually the marines contacted her in Oakland Iowa in 1919. The marines put her in contact with some of the soldiers from his unit (those letters, also in the box, was how we heard about him being shot earlier in the battle but refusing medical attention). He and the other 2 soldiers were buried there they fell, but as you might imagine, artillery is not kind to the body. Great Grandma complained they sent him home in a jar (I'm assuming the jar was inside a casket). He's buried in a little cemetery in Oakland IA. Great Grandma outlived everyone from her generation as well as her daughter who was caring for her and visited us from time to time. We've sent scans of all the letters and certificates to the Iowa Historical Society but lost contact with them during the pandemic, looking to find a home for the little box other than a closet here and we still have his dress blues, although they aren't as bright blue as they might have been 100 years ago. With 4 bronze battle stars and 2 silver stars he was definitely the over achiever of the family (my dad received 1 bronze battle star for ground combat, Iwo Jima). My son is currently on active duty and thinks the second silver star might have been because the purple heart didn't exist until the 1920's. Anyway, between my son and I we have posted scans of the originals and one of the letters on find a grave. My parents always thought he was killed after the war ended because of how late the official notification came, but he was killed 17 days before the war ended. He was close to making it.

It's one of those things. As humans when we see no sign of end to an uncomfortable situation, we tend to be on high alert and develop thick skin for all the adversities that may lie ahead. Here lies the case they'd been told the war's ending in a few minutes. Being overjoyed there is a high probability you might stop thinking rationally for some few moments and within those moments as we've dropped our guard, a lot can go wrong as in the case of the unfortunate French soldier Augustine.

Respect to all of the soldiers who died in this war, no matter who they fought for. At the end of the day, there were all just men, people like you and me. They had dreams and hopes, families and futures, and they laid down their lives in the name of a cause they believed in. They lived and died with courage and dignity, and to die for the people you love, the country you love, and the beliefs you love is the most honorable thing a person can do. That's excactly what happened. There were several COs that hadn't been in command very long that felt they just HAD to have some "glory" before the war ended.
@corey10544 жыл бұрын
Thats what happened with Henry Gunther. He was once a sergeant but got demoted to a private for writing a letter to a friend encouraging him to dodge the war draft as much as he could. He was desperate to regain his rank before the war ended and decided the best way to do this was by bayonet charging a German MG post ALONE one minute before the war ended. Theres a fine line between Bravery and Stupidity...I know what side of the line he was on.

I have an elder in my family who was part of a war (not sure which). He stepped on a land mind… and well, you know. It’s quite devastating that these men had to endure such painful and harsh punishment of war. Now’a’days war would just be “I sunk your battle ship” kind of deal… it’s upsetting. God bless those men who fought to protect our country. ❤ may you rest in peace ❤️
@Oskovian8 ай бұрын
Definitely not WW1 then since landmines hadn't been invented yet but there were some primitive ones. These mines consisted of an artillery shell being buried faceup so if a soldier step on it it would explode.

In 2004 i talked to a friend of my grandmother. He was born 1910. he witnessed the ending of the war. he lived in Augsburg (city in bavaria) . One day 1918 .. the Main Street was deserted , suddenly men appeared. German soldiers walking .. walking home. He said thousands, thousands passed his home. Everyone laid food and gave water. The passing columns took around one week until the last men passéd the house .
