Also, in terms of The second sex, I’d definitely recommend approaching it chapter by chapter. Most of it will feel like slightly separate essays so it’s easier (and most efficient imo) to read it that way. You’ll also get more out of it for sure!

I think you might be surprised by "Normal People"! I found it extremely interesting, I think a lot of people miss the """deep""" aspects of it. I'd say look out for class commentary when you're reading, it's full of it! Also, since you mentioned you're a fan of explorations of the psychological and power dynamics of sex, I think there's lots of that in Normal People and I fucking loved that! So the second sex I’d recommend starting from the beginning and going through it in order. I actually did the opposite, read random essays that interested me (or were assigned for class) and it meant 1) I was left with a chunk I wasn’t as interested in and it was a slog to get through at the end 2) the arguments build on each other and flow well which you don’t get to experience if you read it randomly. It was an odd book, like you I’d read a lot of extracts for classes and decided to tackle the whole thing. So many of its arguments were very modern, she doesn’t use the same language of course but there’s early seeds of gender being performative and the separation of biological sex and gender. A large ish focus on intersex people, which I wasn’t expecting. But then intersex people were referred to as hermaphrodites which brought me right back to the time period it was written in. And the chapter called the lesbian was actually more about what nowadays would probably come under bisexuality. (Also a bit disheartening, she talks about many anti-feminist arguments being boring, overdone and outdated but they’re arguments I’ve still heard people make today. Although alternatively if you’re a glass full person it’s good to see how far we’ve come in other areas.) There’s a whole literature analysis part at the beginning which was my favourite. Really great read for its philosophy but also super interesting from a historical standpoint too. P.S. Also ‘How to Suppress Women’s Writing’ by Joanna Russ! Check it out! Just your comment about how classics have stood the weight of time so they’re more likely to be good is something Russ talks about a lot, how women writers have to be exceptional to be remembered and overcome the ways they are undermined. Hell, the cover is amazing and made me question quite a few of the ways I talk about women writers as a feminist.

I actually read the entirety of The Second Sex this summer! Part one and two read fairly differently but they’re both fantastic - I think as a comp lit student you’ll really enjoy her analysis of myths and literature near the beginning. I think it’s totally possible to read it all the way through but it would also work chapter by chapter depending on what you’re most interested in. Whenever you get to it it’ll be so worth it, I promise!

I actually read both Normal People and the Alchemist in the past few weeks haha I loved the first and hated the second, so I’m interested to see how you get on with them. You get used to the lack of quotation marks in Normal People fairly quick (though it irks me still) and it’s a really fast read-and emotional as hell. The Alchemist was just... eh. Hey Emma! So I've read the Second Sex cover to cover. This year actually! Here's what I'd say: keep in mind the current translation (the one by Vintage that I also read) is a bit stale, I'd recommend you checked out an LRB article on it by Toril Moi, super interesting. Anyway, the language of the book does not make you want to read it, but the satisfaction and the holistic understanding of her ideas made it worth it for me. I don't know if I would have understood how everything tied in together if I had read it in small bits like Montaigne who writes short essays on various topics...however: the book was originally published in 2 volumes, so a great idea is to split it into 2 books. Volume 2 is less philosophical so will flow faster. Looking forward to your thoughts once you get into it! x ❤️

Question about reading Sade. I'm a 17 yr old devout catholic who wants to read about various beliefs, but cannot in good conscience read pornographic literature. I've never read Sade, but would it be feasible to skip over the pornographic passages, or should I just avoid him altogether?

I’m my opinion yes. It’s very explicit content, that cannot be over stated, but he alternates between the pornographic and the philosophical, and it still makes sense if you skip the former. I think there are actually abridged versions that remove the pornography all together, so it might be worth looking into those copies!

I think the reason Normal People get some praise is due to the factor it is better than Conversation With Friends, the book is average for me. On the other hand, the TV series is such a good quality, the cinematography, music, acting, I do recommend it. I've never read the book One Day, but from the film, I do prefer the style of just meet one day, but lasts longer period throughout life, certainly more emotional to see the ups and downs. Normal People is a bit disappointing for just lasting the university period.

ok, i know this is so stupid but i have to throw in my 2 cents on normal people: watch the series first. the book will “open up” so much more to you once you’ve devoured the story once already through a visual medium. and also watch the show first _because_ of the lack of quotation marks in the book. it was extremely hard to read for me and i’m not dyslexic, so i can’t imagine what it’ll be like for you or anybody else who has similar kind of reading-related problems. if you watch the show first you’ll know what’s happening and who says what exactly (the show is so true to the book that so many of the lines are straight up from the book). i understand why that’s hard; i’m also one of those people who likes to read the book first (if it’s available) before watching a show/film. but trust me, normal people is _so much better_ the other way around.

Oh god I personally absolutely HATED normal people. I liked Rooney's overall writing style, but the story was just definitely NOT worth the hype - as it felt as a very average boy-meets-girl novel. Though it might touch upon deeper themes at times, there are other books that do it way better than Rooney does. Very curious as to what you think of it!

@@yj6118 well 'the man who cycled from India to Europe for love' (even though in itself not a great book) does a way more thorough job at describing class differences. And differences in a place where they are actually affecting and prohibiting certain people from coming into relationships into each other and/or getting chances in life. Not even romantically per se, but in the culture it portrays it just shows how incredibly unfair those differences can be. Whereas in Rooney's novel I feel that the issue that comes into play due to their different backgrounds is just not.... developed. And after all they are both white privileged kids living in a Western European country. Don't get me wrong, I see how it could have been that Connell and his family might've had it tough and I don't want to say that even in the UK there's no class differences, but, yeah, if she wanted to do an issue like that justice, this just....wasn't it in my opinion (which of course others might have seen differently! Books are open to interpretation!). Anyhow, that was not even the deal breaker for me. It just was not my kind of book I suppose, so that's perhaps why I just really don't vibe with the way it touches upon things either :')

I love your book vids but I don’t think it’s fair to put down a book just because it’s not some great philosophical text or classical canon, especially before reading it. I dabble in all kinds of texts -complex philosophical works and in contemporary literary fiction books like Normal People. Each has its own merit and you may even hate the book in the end but read it before trashing on it.
