I don't use a filament spool. I stretch my filament out for hundreds of yards outside my house and let it feed through an open window. I hold on to the far end to keep it straight. It's tiring on long prints lasting days but my family brings sandwiches and Mountain Dew to me outside.

I'm seeing the same issue with a print now and while I haven't checked the motor gear screw or Z-axis, I did recently add belt tensioners and made sure they're tight. Though the smoking gun for me is that the Inland filament was very sloppily wound from the factory. Not the first time I've had that kind of quality from Inland. I'll see if it shifts with this print. If it does, i'll check everything you mentioned again and re-wind the spool.

Still kind of a mistery to me what exactly would cause it (meaning: except for underextrusion, why motor would shift between layers) ... I just had the very same layer shift problem after a 18 hour print.. I also heard a noise that I couldn't identify, at first I thought it was the nozzle touching some layer, but after watching this video I think is the spooler.. The last print before the 18 hour fail was a new spool holder that use ball bearings.. Now the rotation is very smooth but it tends to rotate more and the filament is a lot loose compared to the original setup where it was tension between the spool and the extruder due the friction, so it has to be the problem.. I tried to improve the noise from the spool rotation and I thought it was going to be an improvement, but at the end I created a new (and lot worse) problem. The moral of the story: don't fix what is not broken 😂

The overly tight belts per Dosclic 98 sounds like just the kind of thing that would do it. Several videos insist that self-tangling (one loop moving under another loop) is a physical impossibility. They say you have to lose control of the end of the filament at some point (like when you're threading a roll to the machine and the end of the filament slips out of your hand) and while you're not able to see what's happening, the end of the filment threads under another loop.

That kind of shifting couldn't had happen because of filament got stuck. Even if you had forgot to put any screws on the vertical aluminum bars and the extruder was pulling with a force of 100J still the Z axis wouldn't budge because of the reaction force. If you imply that the extruder is dragging just the Z bar , the wheels that mount the Z bar on the vertical bars normally don't have more than 1mm tolerance of shifting left-right. Had your wheels be that loose to allow that kind of shifting the Z bar would had come right off before the print even started.

James Black thanks for the feedback, but this was the root cause. I finally caught it in the act while I was working next to it all day and saw it trying to pull from the tangled reel.
@Augcliffe5 жыл бұрын
I agree with James, I don't think this was your cause even though you are convinced it was. A tangle would not cause a perfect shift in layers. I have done probably 20 prints and 2 had a small shift like this. Never had any filament issues. In fact I never made changes or adjustment. It seems to be random for me anyway. I have a bad print, reprint without changes and it's not there. I don't know. Obviously filament snag is not good though.

Thanks guys. It has been 10 months with no problems. All I did was set angle my 2 spoils and now I’m just careful when changing them.
@808beamnews23 жыл бұрын
This issue is caused by your nozzle knocking your print then at some point shift it, because of one of your smallest print corner will go higher when it dries during the print. I have this many time such as im printing a lot of hollow car models who have really tiny corner and lines. The solution is to stay close and when it start to bump against the part see where it bumps then cut a bit of it while it’s still printing.sounds crazy but troubleshoot some Really hard prints. The tangling of the filament can only cause what they called ghost layers such as your filament cannot arrive in the nozzle because already blocked at the spool level so the nozzle will just continue his journey without any filament coming out. U have solved it by changing the filament who must to have another behaviours when drying in those tiny corners.
@hahnkf81113 жыл бұрын
808Beam News I’ve heard people say that too, but I have a hard time believing it could move and then stick itself to the plate again. Plus The main problem 3d printers are notorious for isnt the random skipping, it’s when it skips *consistently* on the same layer every time. That’s what I’m still trying to find an answer to.

Omg, thank you so much! Never would've though to check this... Luckily I didn't have to print something nearly as large as you before experiencing this issue.
@feilko21708 ай бұрын
I'm sorry for you but you didn't solve the problem... you got lucky that the last try didn't fail but layer shifting is due to the X or Y steppers skipping steps (sliding if you prefer) and that is due to the motor not being powerfull enough in a particular moment of the print. You havr to check temperatures on your stepper motors, if you can barely touch it (80°C) the magnets inside will lose their magnetism to the heat and the stepper motor will skip steps. On the other hand if it's too cold it means that your stepper motor doesn't recieve enough Ampers (you can check on the internet how to adjust that depending on the printer you have). Low amperage leads to stepper motors skipping steps too. Another problem you might have created is increasing the acceleration values eather on your slicer program or in your 3d printer settings and if your stepper motors aren't powerfull enough to make that acceleration they'll slip (skip steps) and you will end up with failed prints.
@hnolsoe4 жыл бұрын
Really rewinding is not the best solution, because spools can actually get stuck like that even if they are perfect at the start, specially when you have less filament on the spool and it has become light. You will experinence the filament unravelling itself in bursts and getting caught under itself frequently. You should make it so that there is constant tightness between the spool and the filament guide and you will never have that issue again. Make the filament guide have friction against the filament and the spool have a slight drag when pulled on by the printer.
@Wee-WorldMiniaturesandProps Жыл бұрын
I'm confused. If you accidentally tied up the filament, wouldn't this be in the outermost side of the spool, and not towards the end of a 20+hr print? Or were you pausing these and removing the spool and then restarting?
@speedybits24 күн бұрын
You can experiment by intentionally tangling a spool. You will find that if you start unraveling it with the tangle there, it will create some tension, but it will still unravel. But sometimes you’ll reach a point where you can’t pull on it at all because the tension is too great.

No possible way filament snag would cause this. Ender 3 is not direct drive. If it were direct drive then this is a possibility because the filament actually moves with print head. With the Ender or any bowden tube type/fixed extruder type, if you bind the filament roll the extruder gear would skip and you would get unprinted layers. It would not restrict the print head from moving! Think about it. Personally we have been battling this layer shift for quite some time (on CR-10, T-REX, and now my Ender 3 is doing it). We have had positive results with cooling down the stepper drivers on the main board. Basically installing a bigger/better fan to keep them cool. This is still questionable iMO we have had positive results with it. UPDATE: Turns out the Ender 3 Pro has the motherboard fan connected in parallel with the part cooling fan and on the first few layers the part cooling fan is not running so the layer shifts I was getting showed up only on larger prints. Solution was to snip the connector off the motherboard fan and wire to the always on hotend fan screw terminals. www.reddit.com/r/ender3/comments/a2s2oy/ender_3_motherboard_fan_fix/

My spool's are always tangled I have to babysit them so the spool doesn't snag and stop the print. It doesn't cause print shift, but it does cause the filament to stop flowing so the next layer can gunk up as it doesn't have the lower layer to adhere to. I think the gunking up causes the shift...I'm getting clunks but it seems to me the head is bashing throught the gunks and gets stuck for a bit before it pushes through causing the stepper to skip.

Pretty sure this isn't my issue, I've printed 3 pieces perfectly, then suddenly without any apparent cause, or change in settings etc, I got layer shift, so I printed again to see if it was just a one off, no, layer shift again, worse this time, bit in the same direction, then again after tightening the X belt and re leveling, buy the problem was almost unnoticeable this time, so I've tweaked my leveling once more and crossing my fingers. But the thing I'm finding strange is that it appears to be happening on the exact same layer every time. Buy since my first three prints came out perfect, I'm thinking it's not a software issue.....I'm baffled.... Also with yours I notice it went a long time without any layer shift and happened in similar layers on your s wich seems to be a long old print time before the shift occured so how did it not occur straight away if your spool was tangled the whole time? Weird me thinks, also, how painful to have the print fail after such a long time, that looks like a good old 18 hours plus print time?

In a direct drive extruder, it might affect the movement but in the Bowden system, it should not.

It is actually very easy to accidentally cause a tangle if you don't grab the filament carefully when you back it out of the extruder. I'm sure I had done this to nearly every spool.

wait whaat ?? it's not a printer problem ? this is weird ... but i'll definitely try to check the spool next time. The thing is, i experience this on my Ender 5, but the spool as far as i can see it's perfect. It's a brand new spool that was never removed and reintroduced, so i can't see how the filament could be twisted. Anyway, thanks alot :)

Had made a roller for my printer. After 13 hours I saw a similar shift in my print. So I checked everything. ...Except the huge roll that was missing on top (now laying on the floor)....
