I did the same a few years ago. Had to do a software rebuild of an instrument pc running old software that runs on XP. Ended up phoning the UK for activation, as it was no longer done in my country. It all worked out, thank goodness. I don't recall voice activation, I think it was all done via the keypad (so much easier on standard landline phones).

If Microsoft shut it down, many services, such as gas and electric companies, process controls and others essential services would no longer have the ability to operate. For future reference, when trying to navigate computer voice menu systems, speakerphone is much harder for the computer to process than the phone's internal mic. Also, when you're using touchtones, push the number buttons longer, and mute the microphone. It helps keep the signal clean for the computer to process the beeps. In my experience, some (foreign country) touch tone systems have trouble picking up the touch tones when you are on speakerphone and your side is not muted. apparently the static noise is too high or the system may pick up echo of the tones played locally (if your phone does). Mute your side and recognition will be better instantly. (The touch tones will still be sent).

Holy crap this was frustrating to watch, you are so bad at following instructions it's unbelievable. You could have just typed the long code using your phone keypad instead of speaking it out loud, all you had to do was type it SLOWER. I mean you realized that you were typing the numbers too fast during the initial verification process and then 2 minutes later you are entering numbers at lightning speed again and wondering why it's not working. Also, I don't know what made you think that you had to enter the code into the phone at the very end for verification, it didn't tell you to do anything like that.
