Decades of Cover-ups in the Jewish Community: Abuse Scandal Fallout | ENDEVR Documentary
This is the dramatic follow up to the Walkley Award winning Code of Silence - watch here: • Jewish Scandal: Ultra-...
Breaking the Silence follows the journey of Manny Waks who was, until recently, the only survivor of child sexual abuse within Melbourne’s Orthodox Jewish community to speak publicly.
Breaking the Silence begins with Manny Waks as he gives evidence at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse, during which two ultra-Orthodox Jewish institutions are accused of covering-up and protecting perpetrators in the 1980s and 90s.
Over two explosive weeks inside Melbourne’s County Court, viewers will witness, for the first time, those rabbis and officials accused of the cover-ups take the stand and be grilled. For the first time, it is also revealed that Manny was not the only member of the family who was abused; Manny’s father Zephaniah Waks reveals two other sons were abused by a Yeshivah Centre teacher, David Kramer in the 1990’s. He had tried to have the abuse handled by community leaders but was subject to an ancient code of silence that forbids Jews from speaking about the allegations involving other Jews, to the police.
The result was that Zephaniah and his wife were virtually excommunicated and feeling isolated, they decided to relocate to Israel. Now his other son Yanky agrees to speak on camera for the first time.
After the hearings, Manny travels to the United States to confront one of the two men who he claims abused him. The film’s climax follows Manny to Los Angeles, where he meets a convicted pedophile who was given a suspended sentence for abusing AVB in Sydney in the 1980s. It’s a powerful moment between victim and abuser that delivers an unexpected conclusion.
Will Manny’s confrontation with the man he claims abused him give him peace of mind? And will his meeting with the convicted pedophile give him a crucial sense of resolution?

The senior rabbis and members of the board who did nothing and also encouraged the shunning of the victims and their families should be criminally charged. All those community members who participated in the shunning should be ashamed and apologize to the victims in frontof the whole community.

They will stand before God whether they are properly punished in this world or not. They can hide behind their community that is protecting them; but I am so proud and inspired by his parents who made the hard but right choice, Their soul be clear when they go before the Almighty. I know that doesn’t feel like enough in this world of man’s wrath, but one day you’ll understand their souls will be clear, and for that alone, I am so pleased for them.

Agreed, the message must be sent to those who aid and abet child molesters! If the bishops and others in Catholic Church coverups are charged, so should those in the Hasidic community. No one is above the law. The convicted rapist was the son of one of the leadership???!! Well, there you go, I hope that the Crown prosecutes all of the co-conspirators.

There's a video by an ex Amish man. He tells of the church bringing an adolescent to a doctor to castrate him coz he was molesting children. The doctors wouldn't do it and outcome unknown. He said he feared for the boy coz he'd watched castrations done on hogs. He thought psychological help was needed and yes definitely. The church would never allow non religious counseling. These are real issues.

I'm in this community (not in Australia). I have to say that there has been a groundswell of people reporting since this documentery came out in 2013. Actually even before, I first was confronted with this issue as a teenager in 2007 when someone pointed me in the direction of a website called Wall of Shame where people posted photos of their abusers. I have watched how speaking out has become more and more mainstream in the Orthodox world over the years. Thank God, we are finally rooting this evil out and saving children's lives. Removing the silence will hopefully scare the fear of heaven into future abusers. They will not get away with it. I imagine this is also the case in the Catholic church.

This was a very sad, yet inspirational story. I think Manny finally got some form of 'closure' after the traumas he suffered and he deserves a great deal of credit for shedding light on the story of child abuse in the Australian Chabad community. I do however feel very sorry for his parents. His father Zephaniah suffered greatly at being shunned by the community he had been a part of for many years and likewise his wife who nevertheless remained a member of Chabad following their move to Israel. I hope all of Manny's family finally found peace in their lives and were able to move on, also the other survivors of the child abuse story.

I understand why Manny would speak with a perpetrator. How can we prevent future abuse without speaking with them and trying to understand? It doesn't mean you condone the behavior. Understanding how and why they prey on victims will help prevent future victims! I also understand where AVB is coming from but he isn't the only victim and it's not his place to tell other survivors how to face perpetrators. Yes, Manny didn't face abuse by the same man's hands but he's using his voice to advocate and prevent future CSA victims such as himself and AVB. Everyone faces this differently so I don't want to say anything negative about how AVB handled Manny speaking to his abuser

Manny I completely understand and know what you have went through. I just wish that when I spoke up about my abuser that they adults would have actually done something about it. I was 13 when I spoke up and ever since I have learned of at least 20 others that the man who had molested me between ages 5-13 has either done something to them as well or attempted to. Some I spoke with were not going to admit what had happened to them either and I do not blame them. I have long since gotten past the hurt and anger but I know others who have not. I also learned a lot more about a few other men that were in charge of the Boys Club back then as well. This was before it changed to the Boys and Girls Club. Once the changeover was made they left town as fast as possible and only a select few ever heard from them again.

These “leaders” should be deeply ashamed for their behavior & lack of empathy or effort to support these victims. The community that allows them to retain positions of leadership should also be ashamed. This is not godly work

Manny: you are a shining hero! I wish the average person would have at least a tenth of you courage and strength! This whole world would be a better place! Just think about the amount auf children you (you personally!!) have saved from the lifelong consequences of abuse! The number of kids that have not been condemned to be suffering of nightmares, flashbacks, psychological problems etc. ... It is like someone building a handrail on a brigde: you will never know who might have drowned. But you can look back and count the victims of the passed years, decades... You have saved hundreds or thousands of children. By just gathering the courage to speak up and being strong enough to risk everything. Disgustingly the victims of such crimes still "get the blame" and are punished by being rejected and shunned. As if they would not suffer enough. Your father is an awesome man as well! He stands by your side and does as a father should. Unfortunately your mother is so entangled to her religion that even her own children are sometimes less important to her than her congregation. But I acknowledge that she had to suffer a lot just for being the mother of a victim. Better: of three victims. As I am an atheist and fortunately have never been part of a strict religious cult, it surprises and shocks me to see the incredible amount of power and control a few old men (at least usually) can have and execute in religous groups. This can never lead to a good ending. Almost unlimited power will almost always lead to its misuse and abuse. Because we are all humans. Religous or not- that's of no consequence. I have my morals and they are definitely strikter then the morals of those Australian Rabbis! It will take a lot of brave Mannys to fight such atrocities. Manny- I wish you the very best from the bottom of my heart! ❤ For you and your whole family! ❤ And for all the victims out there! ❤ I very much hope that they all may one day be able to forgive. In my opinion forgiveness is the key to healing and freedom and peace of mind. Shalom
