Arranged/forced marriage should be classified as human trafficking. What's the difference between a pimp or trafficker selling a human being in exchange for money or property?
@zagrizena8 ай бұрын
Arranged marriage, however unusual in our culture, is not immoral in itself. As long as both parties participate voluntarily, are given a chance to "meet their match" and potentially refuse the union, it's not illegal. Problems start, when marriages are arranged without consent, through duplicity or sheer force. And especially, when young people are forced to travel abroad to get married there under a different law, which might severely limit their rights within the marriage and their options to leave.
@lisawentworth68317 ай бұрын
@@zagrizena It IS Immoral...it is the forcing of someone AGAINST their will! It is an arrestable offence! It is forced rape and beating that go along with it, and death if they try to refuse. That's as immoral as you get. Based on your name, it sounds like it' OK in your culture, but Western civilizations that have to uphold the safety of ALL people have to make laws that may bend other's cultures...big difference. Safety...it's for everyone, despite culture!
@zagrizena7 ай бұрын
@@lisawentworth6831 which culture do you think I come from? 😀 I do agree *forced* marriage is immoral and illegal. Having somebody else *arrange/match* a partner for you to marry, is not, as long as both prospective spouses agree. I'm simply differentiating between a forced (which is always somehow arranged) and an arranged (which doesn't necessarily need to be forced without consent) marriage. Or to put it bluntly: marriage based on romantic infatuation is not the only acceptable and legitimate way of choosing a spouse, even in the west.
@G275P6 ай бұрын
@lisawentworth6831 arranged marriage is different from forced marriage. There is a big distinction. Forced is against their will and as the name states "forced". Sometimes arranged is parents AND the proposed couple sitting down and then the couple going on dates and agreeing whether or not they are suited to one another.

As someone with a lot of Muslim friends, there were many girls I knew that would tell me about how their parents would threaten them with forced marriages if they didn't do well in school or were hanging out with boys. My friend Nasima was really quiet and secluded. She was part of my circle of friends and wore the most religious clothing out of my Muslim friends. She attended my high school for three years before she just disappeared. None of my friends knew where she wentand she never spoke about her home life so I never expected this to happen. I still wonder today whether she was forced into marriage or if she just moved. These documentaries about forced marriages have really made me reflect on what happened back then and I'm only seeing now just how radically different western and eastern cultures are. I hope the girls in the documentary stay safe and I hope the same for Nasima.

One young woman was badly mistreated by her in-laws and husband and had to flee from them without letting us know. I was her boss. She left me a message and I totally understood. Later, she contacted me and I was so glad to see she had a happy and much better life. Right here in the US. And 2 boys who worked for me had arranged marriages. I doubt they worked well, as they grew up watching their dad physically and emotionally abuse their mom. Both mom and dad worked for us, and I wish I could have beat him senseless. I was in a remote village without money or means of contact. The police ignored me there. I was used as a bridge by my parents and dad's sister to help her daughter to climb in the UK over my happiness. Can you put someone else's happiness over your sons happiness. If I could, I would love for her British citizenship to be revoked and see her returned to Pakistan and banned from coming to the UK. I hate her with passion. The British turned the reins over to India in 1947 , yet after 70 years of self rule , India still remains an Imoverished drveloping Nation. Look at Germany and Japan . They were devesated and lay in ruins after WW2, and yet surpassed India by the Early 60s. India has a much larger advantage than a Germany. Geoghraphically , and by Size . No one whows what child they get or the world would be a perfect place and i know the world isnt perfect dut to wars and natural disater that comes out way. So when it comes to blaming on what kind of child they have it not really a good idea. If you want blam then blame it on the nature of life. I am a girl but i could have been a boy, no one know how they were born beside out of the spern and ovum put together to make a human being. Just like you or the victum or the parents. This reminds me of when I was in highschool. There was a girl in my science class that was from the middle east. She migrated with her family years beforehand. We had a new male student who had only been in the states for about three months. One day he stood up in the middle of class and pointed at the girl yelling at her in his native language. We were all wind eyed and confused. Then he threw a rolled up paper at her and yelled "COVER YOURSELF! YOU SHAME!" My teacher briskly walked over to him and smacked him with her teaching binder. Yelling back at him "You're not at home! She can have her hair like that if she wants. Sit down and shut up before I make you!" Apparently she spoke the language. I'm of an Afghan background and I've heard stories like this one too many times. I don't understand why as parents you would move half way across the world for a better life for you and your family... but retain your backward mindset and what's worse, drill backward beliefs such as forced marriage into your children's heads too. I understand why this shit goes on back home in Pakistan for example. You're surrounded by your family, you live in the same unit and are physically bound by your culture. It doesn't make it anymore okay but it makes it easier to comprehend. However the whole point of coming to the UK is to move forward, give your children, the future generation, a chance at education and success. It's beyond me why you would pull them back into the god damn dark ages and chain them there? It's appalling, cruel and what's worse is that these people, they think that what they're doing makes them better Muslims. It shouldn't come as a surprise that forced marriage is sinful in Islam and in actual fact, is illegitimate. Any sexual activity that occurs during the 'marriage' is seen as fornication. So instead of strengthening your faith lol you've actually bought yourself a ticket to hell. Rightly so.

Too many. For sure. Let's be honest about human social structures. Nothing is simply black and white....there are always gray areas. Like the cast system in India...it's illegal but still comes into play. Or the class system in England....very much a part of British life today, despite all the laws in the UK. Humans will ALWAYS take advantage of religious and cultural practice unless they are stopped by law. And the laws must be enforced. That's part of the reason for the very existence culture and religion...To CREATE hierarchies in order to CONTROL. There are many positive aspects of Pakistani culture...or any culture. BUT...patriarchy or male social preference, DOES do damage in almost every country.....NOT just Muslim countries. It's been a long struggle for groups of people to achieve equality under law where their persecution has become enshrined by religion and culture. But, once there are laws protecting people, often it's hit or miss. And PLEASE...please let's not say that men don't also suffer from domestic abuse or cohesive control It's like saying people of color can't be racist...to say that women can't abuse their partners. Look at the example of "TJ" in this series...."TJ" is a woman.....and was busy abusing another woman.

The man said “I can never hit my daughter. You can hit your wife and sons, but not the daughter…” and the he told the police about the incident with his daughter: “I told her I don’t hit you THIS time” which clearly indicates that he has hit her before and most likely hit her also during this incident….

I was married to a man who've I had a 5 min conversation with and that was it. Meeting him, engagement, and wedding all in 3 weeks. My father called it "an arranged marriage" But my father had to pick and approve. I was a teenager, very abusive for 11 years.

I'm sorry for what happened to you? Are you still in that marriage?
@jinx18e4 жыл бұрын
I had a friend who had an arranged marriage since he was 4 and she was 3. He said that growing up being told this will be your wife was weird. Every time they would meat and hang out, they both felt like they had to get along because they had to spend all there lives together. They never really liked each other, but they didn't hate each other. To them that was enough. When he left home the marriage was called off. He never dated any other girl, he said it'd feel like he was cheating. So he was kind of lost when it came to dating, he hadn't even thought of it before.

This is especially inspiring to me, to see, women of color fighting for the most BASIC human rights. EQUAL RIGHTS. I congratulate these young women of valor for standing up for their rights. @Victoria Adeyemi Victoria, it is also VERY cultural.
