Im going to assume the amount of dislikes are from nonblack women. This is one of those scenarios where you WOULDNT understand, unless you were a black woman. This isn't about being "right" this is about stating how a group of individuals have been treated and are bringing awareness to allow acceptance and education. Lol. People are really sitting here saying "Is this really a thing?! Just wear your hair as is." or the sarcastic, condescending, behavior shown in the comments. If only you have been ridiculed in a workplace environment for having braids, and afro etc. Once again, this isn't something that has happened to one or two black women It has happened to 99% if not ALL black women at some point in their lives. Hair has ALWAYS been at the forefront of discussion when it comes to black women. source: I'm f*cking black, and I have literally been questioned/reprimanded about my hair in school AND work. as a minor and as an adult. Don't speak on something you know nothing about.

Well anyone can have an Afro or dreds but mainly black women have them. I’m sure that if a black woman and a white man or woman went to apply for the same job with the same hair style they would both be put off. It’s just store policy
@-skeptix-
@-skeptix- 3 жыл бұрын
I guess what I’m trying to say is you can’t bring race into this because well, your hair is something that you can change and isn’t different for specific races. Sure, different races have different types of hair styles that they mainly have but you can change it to whatever you like really. I don’t think people tell other people to change their hair style because they don’t think that’s how that certain race should look, but because of just their hair in general. Again it wouldn’t change if a white woman applied for the same job

Your an actor you need to change the way you look for the part if someone was making a movie after a book and the charictor is described with long flowing hair then your dreadlocks to not fit the description this goes for everyone in that feild
@BigGrabowski
@BigGrabowski 4 жыл бұрын
Of course, but if you're going to a movie and all the character is described as is "an African-American girl", and the makeup folks decide to give her a straight weave or a chemical relaxant treatment, it's garbage. That is what this act is about--to promote the idea that natural Afro-textured hair is just as beautiful, is not "dirty", and that not every single African-American woman in a show has to have pin-straight hair. It's like.... let's say we took all blue-eyed people, and made them wear dark contacts, because "most people don't have blue eyes", disregarding the many, many people that do. Or, if they took East Asian actors and made them use prostheses to give them double-lidded eyes.
@evanklingman9493
@evanklingman9493 4 жыл бұрын
@@BigGrabowski but isnt the whole thing in the idea of the director or whoever signs her paycheck and what if they didn't Invision the character with giant hair and there getting paid to do so they sign a contract that says what they must and mustn't do what they need to prepare for and most director's whould definitely find the most qualified person to do the role.
@BigGrabowski
@BigGrabowski 4 жыл бұрын
@@evanklingman9493 That's not the point. There are many things wrong with the show business industry where actors are forced to do things for the sake of a director's arbitrary "vision", whether it is a male actor having to dehydrate himself to obtain a "peak" muscular body type, or an African-American woman who has to damage her natural hair and represent an unrealistic and whitewashed vision, these are unhealthy ideals. If anyone has to damage themselves and their identity just to find work, that is flawed. There are far, FAR more movies out there than necessary who call for these things. This whole movement is not about actors, it is about African-American women as a whole.
@evanklingman9493
@evanklingman9493 4 жыл бұрын
@@BigGrabowski but doesn't every actor go through that not just the African American men and woman and isnt the vision usually exposed because actors have already called out the detectors who were unreasonable.
@BigGrabowski
@BigGrabowski 4 жыл бұрын
@@evanklingman9493 Boy, this isn't about all actors! You can say the same thing three times, but the answer is the same. There is an overarching theme of black WOMEN having to get their hair chemically treated just to get ANY JOB, because society is holding onto the flawed ideal that afro-textured hair is dirty, degenerative, and a bad image for the company. That is extending into how black womens' hair is being presented in films, commercials, TV, and even on singers and politicians. The only time I've seen women with natural hair is if the character is supposed to be "sassy", or the production itself is run by African-Americans. Imagine going your entire life, being told the hair you are born with that comes out of your own scalp is disgusting and trashy.

Folks in the comments think this is silly and I get it until it actually happened ro me. I was shocked! My employer told me to go back and straighten my hair and said my hair wasn't good for the customers. I literally had a ponytail and they said because my hair wasn't straight that it was against company policy. Heat damages my hair and I would be bald if tried to straighten it everyday. Thankfully, now I work at a place where it doesnt matter.

"End segregation" "No more one race only" "no more sexism" "equal treatment for both sexes" and so on and on, and then you go and make a "festival for black women"... I am not saying you can't have a festival that cater to things black women want's, but would you please stop crying about how what black people want isn't something white people like when you shut white people out of events celebrating those things... If you share something, the people you share it will may come to accept it, but if you demonize them if they take part in it then they will come to reject it at best, hate it at worst... you are CREATING your problems with your own behavior.
@Cplblue

@Channah Racham Well, if you have a differing opinion, surely you would want those who don't suffer from the issue, to understand it by speaking to those who do, no? To use your example, instead of Chinese women, let's say...Hong Kong residents. They are currently being abused by a regime in China. That has little to no bearing on me as an American, but surely I can support their cause and bring awareness to it, right? If it gets more attention, perhaps the U.S. Government can get involved in sanctions against China. Then in your first sentence, "spoken like a person who doesn't understand". Exactly. So, shouldn't the purpose be, to explain the issue so that more people are aware so that they do understand? So that if it's an issue, the more people can understand, something can be done about it? If you dismiss someone, due to ignorance, and I don't mean that in a duragatory fashion, but in the truest of sense, educating someone on the matter is a positive outcome, right?

There are certain social rules and societal norms that are needed to be followed in countries such as the US and United Kingdom that need to be followed such as a full hijab covering the woman's entire body or obnoxious and unprofessional hairstyles such a dreads and other things and it should be a normal thought that it must be followed. It is like having face tattoos for example and still thinking that you have not got limited career opportunities now.
