I think Interrogate should instead read: "Each time an enemy minion survives an attack this turn, add a Secret from another class to your hand." It keeps the flavor, and in fact I think it even adds to it, while making it a bit more balanced.

@grantzolldan4 жыл бұрын
@@cosie7954I actually disagree about it being too weak! My proposed description does not require the enemy minion to survive the turn, but rather any attack that it survives yields a card. If you have a few small minions on the board then this card can have a huge output. Also, as long as you have a weapon equipped, you're almost guaranteed to get one card off it if you're willing to take a bit of damage. I think it does make it more situational, but I feel that including the enemy hero makes it too powerful, unless it were only allowed to yield one secret per target or something.
@driftwisp27974 жыл бұрын
@@grantzolldanIf you make it survives an attack, it 'rewards' you for taking bad trades. Since it's a low tempo value card to begin with, I think if it's also changing how you're attacking you'd need to get at least three secrets, probably four, out of it for it to be worth it. That probably means having 3-4 cards on board already if you want to actually be killing things at the end, and your opponent having bulky enough minions to enable that. It feels like getting the opportunity to use it is already a high roll, so it's probably too weak like that. Maybe have it be 'survives damage' instead, so you can use things like backstab SI to trigger it, making it a bit less situational?
@grantzolldan4 жыл бұрын
@@driftwisp2797 Maybe so. It could be that all the card needs to be balanced is to remove the enemy hero from the situation and just limit it to minions. I also considered having it so any damage can trigger it rather than just attacks like you suggested, but I was concerned that board clears would be too ridiculous in that scenario. Then again, those are pretty few and far between with Rogue (I think, I haven't actually played HS in a while). I also liked the flavor a bit more without it, but now I can still see it working.

0:41 Trump thinks playing a quest for a 5 mana 20/20 rush that you can't play until around turn 10-15 would be too powerful? Does he not understand the opportunity cost of playing a quest? Edit: For the people who are skeptical, compare this card with galvadon (ungoro paladin quest). Although Miin'Tei has rush, all you need is a single removal card to kill it, and with the abundance of discovers in the meta that isn't an issue. I think riot police could be interesting in a taunt deck, since you can benefit more from the extra health and you don't need to attack with your minions. I agree with Trump's 1 star balance rating on A Year's Passing, but on the grounds that the card is too weak. Maybe old mill decks or miracle rogue would have a better chance of completing the quest.
@iamnotafarid25314 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is even more weak because the quest reward is not even possible to get without card generation shenanigans. Turn one you play the quest which requires you to play 30 unique cards. But after playing the quest, your deck only has 29 cards left. Even if all of them are unique, it is not enough to get the quest reward. Only way around is cards which generate another cards, and you need to get cards which are unique. And you need to generate enough cards that you have something to shuffle at the end of it all
@thatweirdguyoverther4 жыл бұрын
Cards that generate cards (like flybooter, or lackey cards) also count towards the quest, you don't even have to play a Highlander deck
@driftwisp27974 жыл бұрын
@@iamnotafarid2531 Zephyrus is already enough to make you hit 30, so any card generation beyond that goes directly to how many cards you can have left when you get it. Dragon Queen Alextraza usually gets you two. Lackey decks should usually get at least 5 unique lackeys, Priest Galakrond gets a ton of stuff, Steal effects from Rogue and Priest both get there quickly, discover cards like Fire Tree Witchdoctor, Magic Trick, explorer dragons, the list goes on and on. If the game is over when you get down to 5 cards left in deck, then you don't really need to worry as much about super value late game cards, so you can focus more on tempo and anti-aggro with just enough card draw to keep you afloat knowing that you'll auto-win against any deck that's slower than you. You could even just run Elysiana as your only card generation card beyond Alex and Zephyrus, and you'd still get a pseudo-mecha'thun effect in any highlander deck.

Your whole deck is a bit of an extreme take, I think with all the discover effects you'd put into it, you'd complete the quest at around 5 cards left in the deck, perhaps less. Also DQ, Zephyrs, togwaggle and dragon hoard guarantees extra unique cards. 5:15 That seems like a very narrow view for the review. I would rate that card with high design score, since it's basically just introducing a very interesting mechanic entirely. We could have a new keyword (maybe just call it "Overdraw" or "Fatigue") which means you progress your fatigue meter. It could just be a stright up downside to a powerful card (similarly to the Ornary Tortoise, you take damage to play it) but could also be used like this weapon - get a benefit based on how much you took. With 10 or so cards like this (some class specific for warrior, warlock and paladin, for instance) you could easily make a deck that allows for this weapon to actually be a 3 mana 5/2 All in all, as a standalone card, it's indeed weak and oddly placed... but it's good design since it adds a very interesting keyword.

"Exertion", could be a good name.
@NivMizzet894 жыл бұрын
Trump did give an explanation why it's not a high scoring design though. Fatigue is rarely relevant in games, so it's not a very good drawback component. In games that do reach fatigue you don't want to run these cards anyway, and in aggro decks it's just a plain (stacking) 'take 1 damage' that has no actual relevance for the rest of the game (outside of other cards with that mechanic). Either way you're not actually interacting with fatigue at all. The stacking damage as a drawback/powerup does have some interesting design space (yet not too much, as the mechanic itself already prevents you from feasibly running too many), but having it be counted as actual fatigue is pretty terrible design and basically unprintable, so 2 stars seems justifiable. It would be so much more viable if it just came with its own counter (a bit like evil Jade).
@driftwisp27974 жыл бұрын
@@NivMizzet89 I think counting it as fatigue does some interesting stuff in terms of allowing you to print cards that have above the curve value or defense without them being auto-includes in fatigue decks. Imagine "2 mana 2/2 Battlecry: draw a card, Exert", or 3 mana spell "Deal 3 damage to all minions, Exert". Maybe a warrior card that gives an armor boost but exerts, which would be strong against aggro but risky to play against control. You could also do something like print a Weasel Tunneler that has "Your opponent Exerts" added to its effect so it doesn't help the opponent as much if the game goes to fatigue. You could also do Lotheb style stun effects with things like "Until your next turn, each time the opponent does X they exert". That could punish fatigue decks heavily, obviously, but would also be good against midrange decks that didn't want to go to fatigue but got greedy with how many exert cards they ran. Maybe a sort of soft frost nova like 2 mana "Gain 3 armor. Until your next turn, each time the opponent attacks they Exert". It wouldn't stop the opponent from killing you often, but it could help you put the opponent in a spot where they need to play defensively, either to avoid Exerting or to avoid getting burst down after Exerting. There's plenty of interesting design space there, and it makes cards work in different ways in and against different decks, both with causing you to exert and causing the opponent to exert. I doubt Hearthstone would ever print it, but if they did I think it'd likely be a good mechanic, as long as the cards weren't garbage stuff like "1 mana 3/2 exert".
@NivMizzet894 жыл бұрын
@@driftwisp2797 Except you can't print those above the curve cards, as those'd be overpowered in any deck that doesn't reach fatigue (most of them). And if you do balance them to be fair for those, they become completely unplayable in any deck that can reach fatigue (even if accidentally). That's the main problem. (extra) Fatigue is way too inconsistent as a drawback. Until a game reaches fatigue (most games) any fatigue stack is meaningless*, and when a game does they suddenly become game-changing. (*in the sense that it has zero interaction or relevance to actual fatigue) All those exert mechanics you suggest do nothing to solve that problem, nor do they do anything with fatigue that couldn't be done just as well or better without it. Again, the basic concept of 'take increasing damage per card played' isn't the problem. It's the link with fatigue that makes the suggested card such a bad design.

I disagree with Trump's rating of the Merchant. A good comparison is Void Caller. Void Caller is one of the best cards in Wild Warlock since you can choose what you want to get cheated out. By this I mean you choose if Malganis or Voidlord is in your deck. With the Merchant, it's completely random. Not only do you have to run subpar cards, but it limits your discover options and you are forced to play the Merchant first. At least with Voidcaller, you can hold it till you have a demon you really want to develop. In Dragon Hoard's case, most powerful legendaries these days have powerful battlecry effects and mediocre stats. Meaning you'd be cheating out a poorly stated minion on average. Of course there are highrolls like Zzeraku and Catrina, however in Rogue's case, they could already create a massive Edwin on earlier turns or just straight up kill you. The card's effect is good but too random to be effective.
@driftwisp27974 жыл бұрын
I think Void Caller is a good comparison, but you didn't follow it through correctly. You mention that you can hold Voidcaller until you get a really good minion to develop, but with Merchant you get to hold it *forever*. Each time you discover you return it to your hand, while Voidcaller simply dies. With Dragon's Hoard as an example, you don't need something crazy strong. You don't even need to get an 8/8, which happens pretty often. Even just getting a 5/5 King Mulka gives you a 4 mana 5/5, which is pretty good. Certainly not OP, but pretty good. And having King Mukla as your best option is a pretty big low roll. There are only a few legendaries worse than him, and a ton of legendaries that are 6/6 or 5/7 or anything else, which is massive for four mana. And then sometimes you just hit Deathwing or Ysera or a fair number of other things, and the opponent is on hard removal or instant loss.

@@driftwisp2797 The thing about holding Merchant forever is that you're facilitating a dead card for a chance to cheat something big out. Whenever you do want to discover, you are to play said card and are forced to pick the biggest stat minion. To get value from it, you have to tack 3 mana up front onto every minion discover card you play. These days there are tonnes of better and more reliable options. I mentioned Edwin since Backstab and Coin give you a 6/6 as early as turn 2. There's the whole meme about a 4 mana 7/7 but it's not even that amazing anymore in Wild. Don't get me wrong - cheating out stats is great, but Merchant is too unreliable and random

Trump also if your opponent for some reason is playing mechathun deck he won't be able to execute his combo to win on the same turn because the Cheers card gives the opponent a card that he HAS to play if he wants to execute his combo.

Min'Tei is a game-ender? it's a 20/20 with rush. Any deck being played right now could deal with that. Druid has constant big threats, priest has *Shadow Word: Death*, rogues kill you before that card is ever played, hunters have Deadly Shot, mage has heeeaps of freeze spells and removal, warlock has plague of flames. Despite all of this, even if Min'Tei had a big effect on the meta, highlander decks have Zephrys to find Big Game Hunter, and everyone else could very easily swap out their 30th card for BGH. And if anyone thinks that's a bad trade-off, adding a bad card to your deck to counter a popular deck, remember that deck is literally built around Min'Tei. You kill Min'Tei and they have nothing left.

I'm confused on how Year's Passing is OP. You need to play 30 unique cards. 30 cards is the Hearthstone deck limit. One of those cards is a Legendary quest. It's literally impossible to finish the quest.

@Neirean4 жыл бұрын
That's hardly a reason not to print it. MtG has explored thousands of card game concepts, many of which enter Hearthstone piecemeal over the years anyway.
@SuperSymn4 жыл бұрын
@@Neirean but the point of custom cards is to have the community come up with their ideas for cards, taking already existing cards from other games kinda defeat the purpose, it's like copying your homework. Although to be fair who made the card might not know the concept already existed in mtg.
@Neirean4 жыл бұрын
@@SuperSymn meh, going to have to strongly disagree. It is not just as you say - there is also a current of custom cards that are focused on simplicity or elegance of integratation into the Hearthstone vibe, and that type of submission is certainly also acceptable, and this card does so excellently (especially if the creator does not play MtG at all). Just because you don't appreciate this other type of custom card, doesn't make it invalid as you suggest, so yeah, very strongly disagree with you there. Besides, this mechanic is not so specific or parasitic to be so clearly derivative. If it was something like the card Future Sight, I would be more inclined to agree, but this is far less intricate or unique to give the thought of being plagiarism anyway, even if I didn't already agree with its existence for the reason above.

Don't think Trump is right on A Year's Passing. It is maybe 3-4 stars on balance but definately not a failure. Overvaluing the big dumb creature and undervaluing how hard the quest is.
@JackSparrow-gn1zn4 жыл бұрын
I think that the first card is really weak, even with the shuffle. Without the shuffle, having the whole purpose of you deck be executed or shadow worded or any other cheap destroy effect is really dumb. At least galvadon could get stealth
@Noobie2k74 жыл бұрын
It's amazing how he's done 68 of these yet still constantly marks cards down for design stating balance reasons for doing so. "Oh, i'll take 1 design star away before it should cost 1 additional mana" That's a balance problem not a card design one.
@Luca488824 жыл бұрын
Noobie2k7 It's amazing how you followed them yet still don't understand that certain effects cannot literally exist at certain mana costs, meaning that whoever designed them is dumb. A 1 mana 3/3 is overpowered. A 1 mana 2/2 that grows every turn is overpowered AND bad design. Get it now? I'd thank him for somehow having the patience and calm to even analyze and explain. If he had to be even a little bit objective 90% of those reviews would be just: "trash gimmick, retarded design and balance"
@Fusrodog4 жыл бұрын
For the first card, what Trump doesn't realize is how often do you get to complete the quest. Yes, rogues would take advantage of this by drawing shit and playing shit for cheap, but what it comes down to is consistency, control, and not getting killed at turn 5. ***PLUS,*** If we were to balance it to be class specific (ie: put it into either Paladin or Priest [moreso on paladin] for having time legendaries like Nozdormu and Nozari), it would play out in the end like a Mecha'thun card, where your win condition is to try and outlast your opponent's deck until you can finally play your last highlander card. The best part about that deal is that they can't put cards like Baleful Banker in since it slows down their draws to get to the last card. (yes wild has Trailblazer Elise, but that's besides the point) The point is that I see this as a Mecha'thun card and honestly, I'm happy with it. Sure you have to build a deck around that quest, but balance should at least be 3 or 4 stars just by making that *one* change.
