Tip for free hot water in freezing winter when the sun shines,,, ,,, dig about a 3 foot deep hole by about 3 to 4 ft wide and put your wrapped holes in there 2 to 300 ft and then cover it with plexiglass or plastic and then that will provide hot water in the winter if the Sun is out and it will keep the pipes from freezing because they are underground
@bryceslazyporchgarden25217 жыл бұрын
play around with the depth and the width for your own area the depth will keep the water warmer longer and at the same time cool it down enough to where it won't be as hot and burn you
@bryceslazyporchgarden25217 жыл бұрын
if it's extremely cold you may want to go down in excessive of 4 ft

I've used those sun bags while camping for years ...... for dishes and showers. You could even bring them into your tent at night to help keep you warm! I'm sure other folks have more uses for them. If I wasn't so lazy I would be using them for showers here at home as well. Heck ... hang one over a line outside to give your dog a shower etc etc etc!

Starry another way to do the similar thing is to put a black barrel up on the sunny roof and coil some hose around the barrel and roof and run the black hose down to where you need the hot water and use a tee off your water supply to feed the black barrel. We used this method for a summer shower and your cold and hot water could be separate lines. Good video!

Note: Use high quality garden hoses if using to heat water...I have found that cheap hoses grow algae as the sun can penetrate through and sometimes will rupture as the water expands...

In the winter, if you have a large south facing window, you could hang the solar bags in the window. There should be enough solar gain to heat the solar bags
@thecampercook2 жыл бұрын
That's what I was wondering (in regards to heat in the winter). How well do those solar bags work?
@whisperingsage7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's what we have had for years. Our problem is pressure, we have 350 gallon gravity feed tank, and the farther the hose runs, the more we lose pressure. So we have to look at getting our paid for for 4 years 3000 gallon water tank up, higher than the 5 feet the 350 gallon tank. And make a ram pump. There are videos here on it. I will be doing it and I'm no engineer. But also, what do you do Star, in the winter? I'm planning on putting 3" ABS pipe on the roof and covering it with sort of a cold frame, greenhouse idea. Yes me, not the engineer. But I get great ideas from KZbinrs.

It is embarrassing to say that this should be a no-brainer that we should all make use of but honestly, I never really thought to take advantage of the solar-heated water in our garden hoses. We are absolutely on-grid and are wasting so much money every summer by not taking advantage of this resource. Thank you for sharing this tip Starry, it really gave me an 'aha' moment.

Another commenter suggested putting the hose on the roof for indoor hot water. I think that's a good idea if you don't mind how it looks.
@ZeoCyberG7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was even mentioned on an episode of This Old House when they visited Hawaii, one of the few states where solar is actually starting to become common, and it was stated that there's no reason why every house in the country shouldn't have at least two solar thermal panels, regardless of how anyone thinks about solar power... Works even better if you have a hot water tank, then you can add a heat exchanger, make some home made solar thermal panels and channel all that heat to lowering your heating bills...
@ZeoCyberG7 жыл бұрын
1stAmbientGrl... If you have a metal roof then the hose can be under the roof as you get heat transference from the metal... There's even a commercial company that combines solar thermal with metal roof and solar power panels... It's basically just layering systems and taking advantage of more ambient energy than we would normally be able to with just one system...

When we started our farm we lived in our motorhome. Six gallons of hot water doesn't go far with a family of five. I purchased the hose spliter with four connections to hoses 150 feet long and left in the sun. We showered in a shower booth outside and would have to put the water in a bucket first, a lot of times the water was too hot, but, cooled to rinse off. The best shower's ever. Also, I like the tip from Bryce's Lazy Porch Garden. Very helpful. thank you for sharing with us.

Our hot water heater went out so we gathered our 2- 100 ft Garden hoses and laid them on our roof hooked it up to our pump and temp plumbed it into our house going in to our water heater, we just happened to have an extra valve so I would turn that valve on for a little bit hot water would come into the water heater which is insulated. And we had enough for 5 people to take a bath in the evening, not at night. It worked good. One hose was orange and one was green. It didn't have to be black

i bought 1000 feet from an irrigation place for about 1/4 of the cost of buying 100ft rolls at home depot... the water in even a regular garden hose is hot enough to burn you. actually bought one of those solar bags when i was planning on doing saturdays at the market (market safe requires hot water, soap etc)... they cost next to nothing and they're portable! it's not just easy or lazy, it's just SMART... you look at every alternative and use the right tool at the right time... maybe not the best way in the winter, but for sure in the summer...

colored 5 gal pail with cover, sun, $10 ebay 12volt diesel/water pump, old car battery, 1/2in clear air tube at hardware store 35c a ft--8ft, and that water gad you have- the lil shower head or a sink sprayer. Winter add ebay 110volt 1100 or 1500watt heater element...or if you have a toyostove oil burner take off cover set metal 5 gal pail in front of burner. Could put thermosyphon heat ex on burner or exhaust. When you premix temp only need 3 gal per shower but have 5 just in case. Another lil warmer upper get a lil 110v boiler tea pot might need a couple loads. The elec elements didnt change my bill anymore than a coffee drinker/pot would. I do add a coleman camp stove and back to metal pail for those non sunny summer /fall days. Working on design/build for greenhouse/bathroom/washer/shower/cooking outhouse.

Our Coleman shower bag failed where the water comes out. So we got the Walmart Ozark brand and it seemed to be made cheaper. But probably cost the same. So I took the hose and rope off the Coleman and put it on the Ozark. There's a big difference in temperature between water out of the ground and water that has been sitting in a jug. We have a couple solar Luci lights that seem to work well. The few dollar solar landscaping lights work well as night lights. We also have a couple solar spot lights from Lowes that work very well. Pretty bright.

Necessity is the mother of invention. If there's more than one way to skin a cat, it doesn't hurt to have several options. The solar bags and black piping sound like a superb option. Where I live, it's not uncommon to see temperatures of -15° to -20°F during winter months due to wind chill. In those cases, a little "know-how" can go a long way. I'd rather be a Jack of all trades than a master of one. Thanks starry for a season-appropriate video. Can't wait to see what you share for winter when it rolls around. 😊

Ideally, a closed loop systems with some form of anti-freeze agent like oil as the heat transfer liquid since it is resistant against freezing and use some form of heat exchanger to transfer the heat to a insulated hot water tank. Adding a pump helps as water that is constantly moving won't freeze... You can also combine with geo-thermal to prevent the hose from being fully exposed to freezing temperatures or set up panels you only put out when the sun is out and providing sufficient heat... Similar system can also be used to heat air entering the house in the winter... Ideally, it can be configured into what is known as a solar chimney... In the summer it can vent out and cooler air can be drawn into the house but in winter it can vent in sending the warmed air into the house to help heat it and just close it off at night... Add a air tube can be buried in the ground and take advantage of the same effect that allows root cellars to work to bring the air temperature close to what it is in the ground and then draw that into the house, which is good for helping to cool the house in the summer, and can be combined with the solar chimney to get continuous air flow during the day... Another possibility is to have a pump system that runs the water through a sun oven and loops it back to an insulated water tank... Just remember to drain the hose when the sun's not out... Use of a heat exchanger also lets you use multiple heat sources and you can hook in things like a wood stove as well... So multiple ways you can take advantage of both the earth and sun for the home...
