I’ve been full-time for two years and have never really felt unsafe. I attribute much of that to Rufus, my Great Dane. He is super friendly, but if he hears a noise he starts barking like crazy and you can tell it’s a very large dog.

I think if you consider yourself “safe” your guard is already down and you’ve made yourself vulnerable. Common sense is the best thing to bring. Currently in a very remote BLM in Arizona, got a rock stuck between my drivers side dually and could not get it out. Unlocked my bike, hopped on and biked 3-4 miles until I found a couple other campers. Approached and stopped at a distance as three pit bulls raced towards me. Husband, wife, and male friend. No horror story to follow. One guy had me toss my bike in the bed of his pickup, drove to my truck with his air compressor so if push came to shove I could air down the outside tire, remove the rock and air up again. He was successful in getting the rock out with use of my crow bar and a hammer. All this to say, yeah, there are definitely bad folks out there, but go with your gut, be prepared to protect yourself. Most people are pretty dang nice. This guy was a retired firefighter by the name of Jesús and he totally save me.

I'm a trucker, and I must ask that if you are in truck parking (truck stop or rest area), PLEASE don't extend your slides. Those spaces are designed for 102" wide vehicles, and trucks DO swing over the dividing lines when pulling in or out. I've seen what happens when a semitrailer backs into the corner of an extended slide, and it isn't the trailer that needs the repair shop. The same goes for leaving your stairs out...

I always spray ammonia around my entire rig about 4x per day to ward off bears when I am boondocking in the mountains. They hate the smell.

I have everything you talked about-- I carry a Gun everywhere I go, We have 6 camera's all the way around our RV (BLINK Camera which I can arm. If someone walks by our RV at night I get alerted. We have new Door Lock system, we have Motions lights all the around RV. We do stay on BLM 6 months in AZ and never had any issues SO FAR. We carry Bear spray/Gun on my backpack when we hike/First aid Kit and flares. I'm retired Military SF so I'm pretty well trained to deal with issues. If someone come in my RV unannounced I guarantee you they are leaving lying down. Great video to make people aware. Reply

When I'm checking out campgrounds to determine where I will be staying, when booking vacations, I will do a Google Satellite View of the campground. This will give me a general idea of how safe, neat, clean, or maybe it looks like a scary place that you don't want to stay. Yes, I get that the satellite view might be a little outdated, but it's close enough, believe me, it's a good idea to assess the campground before booking. Give this a try next time you book a campground. I have also gone as far as flying my drone over the campground to check it out before checking in. If I don't like it I call them and cancel and move on. As long as I don't lose too much money.

Good tips. I've bought solar powered motion sensor lights (4 of them) that will go on the outside of the van at night. Gorilla glued some magnets to the back and covered the magnets with a light felt to prevent scratches. Good alert for critters or people.

Thanks for the video. Helpful. I finally got my concealed after an incident with teardrop (I had planned on eventually getting concealed). We were at Lapine State park south of sunriver and at 3:00am (we are 69), I woke up for no reason but something not feel right. No noise at all. We have motion lights outside. Two minutes later I heard many feet pounding on the ground walking towards our trailer from behind. Then they split up and pounded on our teardrop the length of it as they walked. Dog not wake up and my husband not hear (hearing aids) well at night. Needless to say it was a bit scary. It was very loud. I felt enclosed and realized we could have been stuck inside small rv. We sold 4-5 months later to get a van.

MJ, as someone who is also married to a police officer, I know the "what if" scenarios. We have camped at places on the ocean that closes some sites during extreme tides because the site floods. Teddy Roosevelt National Park has some sketchy trees surrounding nearly every campsite. I miss our Brooklyn Bedding matress, it went with our last travel trailer. Good content. Have had problems with locals way up north. Did not expect a problem in the middle of the day in a public place. Came out OK but be aware. I understand the NPS has a very large and busy police/law enforcement. It would be interesting to hear what the NPS has, where and what crimes and rates are happening. Not all BassPro/Cabella’s feel safe! Glendale Az. We parked where suppose to for over night(and under a light), got in our car to go get a quick bite. Saw a truck with about 7 people in the bed area drive by our rig, stop close by, they all hopped out and we drove right back to it and moved immediately to the cracker barrel next door. Closer to the main street with more exposure. Was a very good gut move! Always trust your gut!

Only once have I felt unsafe. We were between point A and point B and did an overnight in Lubbock TX. The campground itself was nice, but we got in late, it was raining, and the park was almost full. We were placed next to a very old late 1970s or early 1980s small box camper with a window air conditioner cut into the side held up with a couple L brackets, a board and duct tape. Over the hitch jack was a red devil's head halloween mask. Our neighbor was in his mid to late 40s with an early to mid 20s girl with him who he had his arm around or had a hold of her hand whenever they were out of the camper. At midnight they left for an hour. At 2:30 am they left again for an hour and a half. I almost woke my wife and left on their second "outing". I do carry a handgun which I kept close. We stayed but I didn't sleep. We were out early the next morning. In my opinion was he was selling drugs on the campus or sex trafficking the girl. Something disquieting was taking place that was for sure.

Pro Tip. Correction.....The " pass keys " that dealers have DO NOT open the deadbolt portion of an RV lock, they ONLY unlock the handle portion. These are 2 Separate locks on travel trailers, fifth wheels and motorhomes. Just FYI.

While in the south on or near water you have to be aware of the critters. When they post signs saying don’t feed or tease the alligators, you should do as they say. We like staying at Cracker Barrel’s. Two advantages in staying there. One it’s free parking and we get to eat at least one meal at Cracker Barrel. They have great (real) food. Enjoying the channel. Liberty Harbor RV Park is safe. I used to live right by Liberty State Park and would walk there. That would also make sense if you needed a place to put the RV if you don't have a car and wanted to go into the City.

When my husband and I first started RVing, we would dolly our vehicle. We pulled into a Walmart parking lot to park overnight, we went to eat and when we came back there was a car parked right behind our tow dolly, my husband went and politely asked him to move because we needed to put our car on the dolly. Keep in mind the parking lot had a lot of empty spaces to park in. He moved and we went to bed, when we got up the next morning he was now parked in front of our Rv side ways. This made us uncomfortable and we left and went somewhere else. Last year we stayed at a KOA in bowling green KY where a gentleman came in overnight into the campground and proceeded to break into RV’s. Our neighbor heard him ran out and chased him down a hill and he fell and hurt himself and they called the police who arrested him as he wasn’t very cooperative.

We live in the Pacific Northwest and camp a lot on BLM land. Great advice here and to add to it, know where you are going. Roads can be rough and hard to get in and out of. Know the difference and boundaries in BLM land and private property. We always bring our guns for safety and always carry bear spray when we hike. I also recommend doing your research on the land to learn the history behind it. Stopping in at a small town historical museum is always a must for us. So much to learn in our own backyard. Next to water especially a reservoir. We parked close to the water at a reservoir in Arizona and the dam started to release water. By the next morning the water had rose 5ft. We had to hook up and move.

We went camping in our 5th wheel and had a big dog at the time and this was his 1st time camping. Some one or some thing was outside, because that dog began growling and then laid down by the door for most of the night. The next morning we noticed tire tracks and cigarette buts on the ground. Seems like the car may have sat there for a little while and the dog knew it was there. Didn't stop us though. We went another year with friends. I figure safety in numbers! North Las Vegas at the Hitching Post RV Park. There was a shoot out right next to it the first (and only) night we were there. After talking to a couple of people who were there on month, rates told us it wasn't uncommon in that area. Needless to say, we went to another for our other 8 nights.

We had to park in a Walmart lot, because we were turning around from a trip all the way to Tennessee. We hadn’t made any formal campground request, because were booking it out of the southern states during the gas pipeline, hack crisis. We stopped at a Walmart, went in to make sure that we could stay there, and where we could park. We parked near the end away from all cars. Around two in the morning, some guy in a loud beefed up car drove up right next to us and started reving the engine loudly and screaming and woke us up. That was pretty much the end of our sleep on an already exhausting trip. We won’t be staying at Walmart again.

Yes, park in RV designated area of Truck Stop if you need to park at Truck Stops. Never park together with trucks in truck area, unless you don’t mind getting damages made to your RV.

Try getting from NYC to NJ, legally, if you have propane onboard. All the river tunnels prohibit it, and the bridges are very restrictive. Same thing in Baltimore, you simply can't take I95 through the harbor tunnels. Out west, you may face a 4-5 hour detour because you won't be allowed in the Eisenhower Tunnel. 6:28

Good info! Most of the solo road trips I've taken, I just sleep in the truck. Take a few extra minutes to look over the setup, is there a spot that isn't too isolated? Excellent advise for campers in America who are legally allowed to carry the majority of weapons you spoke of. In the United Kingdom everything you mentioned is illegal for anyone to carry. The exception being bodyguards and police officers who would still face serious consequences if they were to use their weapons whilst camping. Our weapons are hairspray and detergents which may give you enough time to escape. It definitely a whole different world over here where your best bet is very loud alarms and bright lights. When I do move back it’s time for lessons with firearms and your list of equipment to prevent being harmed or worse. I’m not sure which is best to be honest. No guns available for sale or guns for everyone. I’ll ponder that one 🤔

If ya ask my sister, the scariest place we've ever stayed was in the parking lot of a truck stop. We didn't have an rv, but were sleeping in the back of my Suburban. It was in Kentucky, not far from the Ohio border. We got there at like 3 am and got to sleep ... and at 5, she grabs my arm (IN HER SLEEP) and wakes me up and asks me if we're safe. I was now wide awake and PEEVED. LOL After an hour of laying there awake, I got up and started driving and took her fanny home and then drove on to my house, another hour and a half further. I drove six hours on two hours of sleep and slept a very long time after that in my own bed. Good times. ;) LOL

i myself have thought of every one of these concerns, except bears since those are not in the places i have often camped, more likely to find cyotes and rattlesnakes, still need to be aware of those just the same, i will not go camping without some form of self defense, usually more than one, in some places you can have a crossbow if not a firearm, can be just as effective for defense in many situations short of multiple 2 legged horde at onee. also if you have the money for a good firearm, but can not have one, there are some half decent options in the air-gun market believe it or not, that will do the job well enough, and legal nearly everywhere, and everyone exfelons included, not considered a weapon in this country, could maybe even go in to mexico or canada with it (no idea, look up for yourself for specific places, even pellet rifles illegal in some countries) ... have seen air powered rifles that could take out a deer or a wild boar just as easily as standard hunting rifle one may use for such targets, just not quite as long a range is all, there are plenty of vids out there about them, i must say as one quite familiar with firearms myself, these airguns are impressive, not a bad substitute for a real firearm in many cases, including home defense. just requires a bit different planning... such as charging your air tank before bed, they are not just load and forget it things that can be put in a drawer or corner for months at a time or even days at a time really. need to be discharged soon as possible after filling tank for best longevity and power retention.... no different then you dont leave air compressor tanks full in a garage overnight and such. you can, but not good for them, and will lose pressure over time.... do you know the lewis and clark expedition across all unexplored territories.... that was what they used for hunting and defense, one single .50 calibur air rifle between them from what i understand. ... take down bears and deer etc. good ones can cost more than a decent firearm for less results.... but... again, is a different way of getting that result that you are paying for. 800-f2000+ air guns are around.... the cheaper end ones are roughly equal to a standard .22 long rifle in ballistics and results... all the way up to higher end ones hitting like .12 gauge slugs. as a good example, can be semi auto repeater functions, but once tank empty you done, no changing mags mid fight.... as always consider laws where you at.... but between that and crossbows..... you can have something that is legal where you going 99% of the time i would think.

I have a gun question….I have a Pennsylvania concealed gun permit. If I LIVE in my travel van…is it legal for me to travel state to state with that gun? I do know that their are states that are not reciprocal with PA gun carry laws, but if it’s my HOME….may I carry legally state to state as I travel??? BTW, I am a 66 year old Grandmother and I DO KNOW how to use my firearm.

Have you had any issues carrying concealed while in New York? I know that New York weather you are retired or not that state really enforces their gun laws. I travel to New York while flying and I check in my firearm as required following TSA rules but what's interesting when you land and get your firearm all of a sudden NYPD is johnny on the spot telling you the rules of the road basically telling me as a retired U.S. federal Marshal my federal Creds to carry concealed carries no weight in that state it's like you just committed a crime, and never say how come your retired police officers carry and I can't, but in the end I was told so long as they don't see it we will get along just fine. Kind of lame answer.

As long as you have a HR218 cert and a valid retired ID card. You will not have a problem.

I have a CCW from my current state from the Sheriff I live in just as a insurance back up to go with my Federal Creds as a US Marshal (Retired) but most states don't recognize other states CCW's My Federal agency stop doing the recert. every 12 months for retired since COVID and plus there is not enough man power in order to have the Retired Law Enforcement officers 'Federal' and the other Agency's firearms instructor state or city or county just to shoot 15 or 60 rounds down range, depending on the instructor because you are not running their course of fire for their active Officers and since i"m 75 with some combat injuries with my knees from the war they don't run me through their combat course like the scene out of 'Police Academy They mostly want to see if you can hit the target at 5, 10 and the 15 yard line, in my case the course of fire is 2 to the chest and 1 to the head on the silhouette target. It's that old saying you carry your badge you carry your gun, you don't carry your badge you don't carry your gun, the way things are heading on this planet I guess your badge does not make a different anymore everybody is shooting everybody.@@psdtactical​

@@EndlessRVing it’s not where you are, it’s what your in. Tent, Van, RV, 5th Wheel? I would never consider driving around the country in a 40 foot RV, camping…? I would call that RVing, camping would be in a tent, keeping it as simple as possible. I don’t stay at any of those places anyway, National Forest mostly, it’s free and WalMarts along the way to the destination.

In over 50 years of traveling the globe and 45 states I’ve only encountered two occasions that made me feel nervous. Please stop perpetuating this paranoid thinking. There is not a boogeyman behind every tree. If that’s your thinking, maybe you should only stay in gated RV resorts or at home in your gated communities with your AR’s loaded.
