Paul You do not mention which book you are working from. If “Milling a Complete Course” you will find on page 114 the statement which says “Fit bearings using two part resin adhesive. Therefore the bearings will get slit at the same time as parts 63 and 64. Incidentally, I wrote the article for the “Model Engineers Workshop” magazine starting in April 1992 (when I was editor and short of articles) and then published in “Milling a Complete Course” in 2004. If you are looking at “Tool and Cutter Sharpening” look at page 110 for a similar explanation. However, this book deals primarily with sharpening techniques and has much less detail about making items. Harold

After seeing the low profile clamps I made a set from grade 8 bolts. I drilled down through heads then cut them off. Used 8mm Allen bolts turned eccentric in 3 jaw , offsetting by putting aluminium shim under one jaw. It was so simple I should have made them yeasr ago

Pretty nice overall but a slow process loosening and go back to the starting point when sharpening sides of endmills... you could make a pivoting hinge plate with a spring pushing upward to a stop..only needs to pivot little, perhaps 3/8", heaving a handle in front of pivot plate pushing down moving away from the wheel and let go at the starting point, some air flow spindles have this set up and I love it, [ have made one] your left hand is on the pivot handle and right hand pulls the cutter.

Thanks all for your comments. Unfortunately though, at 84 (2017), I now find it necessary to limit my involvement in my website and videos as the brain is not as agile as it once was. However, should you want to contact me, use the contact page on my website, here, www.homews.co.uk/page6.html . Do please read my comments there before posting. Harold

why not put a bearing on the end of the spindle for the hand so no involenary action of the hand is transmitted to the tool. but hey nice job that tool design is from model engineers workshop yes.

how much would one charge to make one ?

As it would be a one of and not mass produced, very expensive, at least £ 200.00 I would think!

Can this fixture be used to shape and sharpen tapered reamers? These cutting tools have cutting edges along their length with either straight or reverse helical flutes. Examples are tapered pin reamers and Morse tapered reamers. I need to make tapered reamers with various custom tapers. Thank you.

Both for taper pin and Morse tapers reamers the angle needs to be very accurate, I doubt if this could be achieved. Also for Morse tapers the required length of the traverse would be difficult achieve without fluctuations. Harold

Thank you very much for your quick response. I have two of your books and have begun making some of the tools. I have a long way to go before I'll be making reamers with custom tapers. Happy New Year, sir. Bill
