Endo Seishiro Shihan Aikido demonstration during the 48th All Japan Aikido Demonstration (2010) at the Nippon Budokan.
Endo Shihan is a 68 years old Aikido high ranked teacher from the world headquarter (Aikikai Hombu Dojo).
Endo Shihan is one of the last students of Aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba.
He is known to have deeply modified his Aikido after he hurt his right arm to offer techniques that are very less based on strength. This is one of the main factors of his popularity in Japan as well as abroad.
Endo Shihan teaches at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo as well as in his own Saku dojo.

I love the way he uses one uke to fend off the other. He was supposed to come for a seminar here to which I was planning to go, but can't travel because of the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster. I hope he'll be able to make it next year.

its funny cause you see some high ranking aikidoka throwing their uke while trying to look tough and strong. Endo Shihan doesn't "try" to do anything. He just does. The beauty in his technique is its softness. He's super efficient. Minimal effort with what would appear to the untrained eye as a disproportionately effective result. Always a treat to watch his demonstrations and seminars.

When watching Endo Sensei (who is almost 70), it is easy to see why Aikidokas can continue practising the art to a great age. Clearly this level of mastery takes many years of practice, but this is encouraging rather than disheartening.

Being a humble karateka I'd like to see the defences against fast low kicks to the thighs, straight punches to the body, and straight finger-thrusts. From my perspective the knife-hand strikes of the uke look telegraphed and slow. I am not suggesting that I wouldn't be put away trying karate techniques, but I would have liked to see how he would do it.

@hstaniloff agree with you , i join his seminar this May and practice with one of them in this clip. he is strong and not easy to off his balance. I am lucky that Endo shihan reconize my limitation and give me a suggestion. afterthat i can nearly apply the technique on him, they are all great and will participate again next year

@hstaniloff I totally agree with you on that. There comes a point where you have to learn how to communicate with your partner and keep connection with his center, while both of you are soft and relaxed. It is indeed quite hard!

This is not at all fake. Go and try - then you will stay silent till your last breath (or until you get the clue and enlighten yourself a little bit more), not saying such a unproved "opinions". I always say go and check for yourself-if you have guts of course :). As far as I have noticed this Man is ready to show anyone who wants to try...This is the highest level I ever seen (and I am able to "see") of AIkido. And I saw many "masters" and Masters.

Hi, Johnoll, I've practiced aikido, on-and-off (thanks to a back injury) for about 26 years. I originally came from a korean karate background, so I can understand your curiousity. There are youtube videos featuring demonstrations by a prominent french aikidoka, Christian Tissier. He often demonstrates aikido responses to kicks and punches. One youtube video of such a demo is titled "Aikido vs. Kick" (Unfortunately I can't seem to post a direct link... I'll try again in a sec.)

@aikiguerrero Most people's Aikido is about doing something physical to uke to break their balance. These guys use their bodies to feed uke's brain false information so that they break their own balance. Like on ikkyo you force the arm up so that uke's weight is supported and then you take the support away and you just relax; you don't cut down just let your body relax. Ukes brain can't react fast enough it looks for that support and their body collapses.

@hstaniloff I have to disagree. I'm also an Aikidoka but train Institute style where effectiveness and practicality is the focus. This video shows all his ukes being exceptionally adhering and falling without any influence.

Martial arts is not for the domination of the people around you. It is for the control and domination of yourself. The use of it in defense is secondary. Do you people honestly believe that masters who have studied their art for years upon years would be allowed to batter, bruise and contuse their students just so the status qo can say: "Oh he beat the hell out of him so it must be real and effective in combat."?

The purpose of most Aikido demonstrations aren't to show you how it would be used on the street. This is a demonstration of harmony with kinetic energy, on the street it would look a bit different.You must realize that he is not putting any force on the people attacking him, he' LITERALLY using their energy to redirect the situation into something else. It's physics, though difficulty of this art does make it seem fake...

@tsukiyumi Who are you to judge it is not good? Seishiro shihan is (at least for me) one of the best aikidoka in the world. If you want to say it is good or not you should to be 9th dan of Aikido. If you are then I am sorry. If you don´t then please don´t say something like this. You can say what you want but you should comprehend it.

Who would see the finer movements within the larger whole to know how to properly perform said kata if they went full on? I know I couldn't. It's comparable to going to math class and the teacher telling you that 1+1=2 so now you can do advanced calculus with that information. You totally skip the necessities in between. They don't move at full speed because there's no need to in a demonstration. No one but God would learn from it. And HE knows all.

@hstaniloff This is definitely "soft" when compared to say an actual confrontation. The ukes are being purposively compliant. But from what I understand aikido defense in general implies defense against at least a mostly committed, if not fully committed, attack or grapple. The more energy from the opponent, the more possible it is to re-direct (into a lock or a throw). So I see nothing to criticize here. Good technique
@SuperUniverse0
@SuperUniverse0 12 жыл бұрын
and one more thing-do you really think that a real master would let you get so close to his body so you could seriously attack? This is possible only for the purpose of training-in other cases there are methods NOT to let anyone with REALLY destructive intentions into personal space...so this is Art-in fact today when people buy guns and are using it for killing purposes all of the "Martial Arts" are Arts-no more no less...maybe sometimes for someone are something more then art...sometimes...

Please come back to earth and join the rest of us. Parents wouldn't let their children go through that and adults wouldn't put up with it. This is on top of the fact that unless the student gives express permission the teacher by the rules and regulations of the Aikido Foundation can't be treated like a toy. They can't just go beating the piss out of them for the sake of showing you combat effectiveness. It's unrealist to move at that speed to demostrate a technique anyway.

I think this guy has brain washed his students to believe he has this unreal Ki... its very funny what the mind can do. I know this is a demo, but his students react as though he is moving them or stopping them with an imaginary field of energy. Reminds me of the Kiai-Master vs. MMA video. One that is very enlightening to people that believe in this. Yes I know this is a demo, but it is utterly ridiculous.
