What's Next for 3D Mario Games?

For the longest time, each new mario game made sense! Expand on the previous game, use the same formula, barely include luigi.
So you’d think after all these games it should be easy to predict what’s to come next, right?
We’ve all thought at some point that the next game will probably be odyssey 2. I would know- ive seen it in my comments
And maybe its true. Maybe Nintendo wil* go with this as an easy way to make money
But i think they’re planning something else, something radical.
Every 3d mario has some form of innovation
Definition: to make changes in something, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.
Mario 64 set the precedent for every 3d game to come, including huge levels that you can replay to complete different challenges
Mario galaxy introduced gravity mechanics, allowing you to orbit around worlds and do platforming in a completely unique way
And Sunshine… had watering hose
3D mario games don’t come around often, and when they do they change the game with a big new twist
Odyssey… did not do this. Moreso, it expanded on previous elements like the sandbox worlds of 64, the cool companions and refining the gameplay.
This is gonna make it hard to do a sequel if you can only really add new creatures for cappy to posses, or make a new donk city 2 where there are more ways for Mario to jump off buildings

What do you mean Odyssey didn't add anything new? Cappy completely changed the gameplay with the cap jumps and captures. Plus it was the first 3D Mario without levels, instead having actual worlds. There are lots of new ways I could see them expand the game in a sequel. New Kingdoms can offer new mechanics and captures, similar to how Galaxy 2 added new power-ups and levels to Galaxy. Personally, I think we'll see Odyssey 2, and then we'll see a new 3D mario after that. I hope that the next console cycle will release two 3d marios :D

Mario odyssey was genuinely the most fun Ive ever had completing a game. It was so fun to explore, find moons. And find new enemies. I would even be happy with redesigned worlds, and new moons to find. It was so unique and that’s what I loved about it. I really hope they decide to do an odyssey 2 some day!!!

If Bowser's Fury is to Wind Waker then the next 3D Mario game will be to Breath Of The Wild/Tears Of The Kingdom. Wind Waker's ocean was filled in with traversable land in BOTW/TOTK and I think that a future 3D Mario game will basically fill in the lake of Bowser's Fury. A massive open world playground for Mario with intelligent tutorials (ie - Great Plateau/Great Sky Island) and funneled entry points for courses in the same way that Bowser's Fury did. Hell, certain areas of Tears Of The Kingdom worked the same way, think of the ascent to the Water Temple with the low gravity bubble course or the trampoline course on the ascent to the Wind Temple. That could have easily been a mechanic in a Mario game, albeit with more mobility and 60fps.

I think Nintendo should make a 3D reimagining of Super Mario World in like a Bowser's Fury style. So the background map will be a more fleshed out version of the original Super Mario World Map that has the individual levels inside which can be started by going through a starting gate and finished by crossing a giant gate like from the original game (as well as checkpoints in between). Levels can have multiple goals aside from just getting to the end (and secret exits). For example, collecting all the dragon coins in the level could be another goal. There will be switch palaces like the original game that will unlock new power ups (and more can be added than just the 4 from the original game). Once you get the feather, you can fly much easier around the map, but the ultimate flyer would be once you get a blue Yoshi. There could be stuff that happens in the background that changes the way a level might play, similar to Bowser's Fury, except maybe stuff like different weather, maybe Bowser or one of his kids comes with a clown car and causes mayhem, or Kamek comes along and changes the level with his wand, plenty of options. And overall the levels within the map should stay as true to the original as best as they can so that a fan of Super Mario World would recognize it, but it would be a 3D version of a 2D level so it might be tough, but that's why I say best they can.

Something that I’d think (or kinda hope) for Mario odyssey 2 (cause you said it wouldn’t work that well because of innovation) is that there is like ocean and sea between islands and levels to fully connect everything together. And since Nintendo likes making fun little gameplay elements, make it so then you would be able to ride the odyssey as a boat to get to places (or just warp). But maybe there could also be some islands with little moons that are little prizes for exploring. They could also give Mario new hats to choose from like a magic hat that lets you summon a random capture or dk barrel blast upwards or absorb projectiles and spit them back to towards a rock to get a moon. Or maybe punching gloves (like in the bowser fight) to punch and fight enemies, or to destroy things that lead to a level, or maybe have it so then you can punch a shockwave.

what if you could team up with bowser's minions? *RANT INCOMING* Goomba - would allow you to stomp on him for extra height. Maybe you could summon multiple for a Goomba stack. Koopa Troopa - Could use their shell to move around and defeat enemies. ParaTroopa - You could use the shell to float briefly, could be used in combination with the Goomba. Hammer Bro - Lets you throw hammers into hard to reach areas. Maybe you could swap to Fire Bro to melt ice. Spiny - Wear the shell to headbutt enemies! Monty Mole - could dig in the ground for a few seconds. Shy Guy - Wear the mask, allowing you to slip past hordes of enemies unnoticed (Maybe Shy Guys could still see you though) Maybe each ability could only be used in its own island, but the final boss lets you use them all, making for a cinematic end to the game.

I think Galaxy 2 was innovative and introduced new platform ideas and mechanics which are overlooked. It introduced flip swaps where the platforms change with a specific character movement and beat blocks where platforms change with the music. In some levels, the elemental makeup of that level changes like turning water or lava into ice which changes the interaction with that level. They were a bit underused though.

@@meowmasterL346 to me, the only step towards the 3D games was the change in the hub UI. I feel like the atmosphere is very dependent on who’s playing. For me Galaxy 1 had a darker more spacey and lonely atmosphere while Galaxy 2 had a more colorful and exciting atmosphere.

Overall good video but I disagree on a few points. 1. SMO's "innovation" was the hat. This was the whole gimmick of the game much like the gimmick of Galaxy is the gravity. 2. Nintendo has definitely done more sequels than BOTW/TOTK. Like a lot. 3. If there was a sequel in the works, I don't believe they'd release it now (like you said around 2 minutes in). They'd likely wait closer to the next evolution in their consoles. Based on previous major 3D releases they'd probably want to integrate some sort of new mechanic that uses something in the new console's hardware, but maybe not. 4. They wouldn't use Bowser's Fury as a test for what players may like. If Nintendo has an idea they want to implement, they're just straight up going to do that. They hardly ever take feedback like that from fans seriously from what I know. Enjoyed the video though and sick editing
