What's your opinion on drivability with the 3RZ? I have an engine, all wiring harnesses, etc from a 2000 4Runner to put into my 85 4Runner. Being reluctant because it seems like a lot of work for 30 hp/30 lb-ft (I have a low mileage, mildly modified 22RE now). I don't need a ton of power cuz I pretty much only use it as a trail rig. It's just that driving to the trails is a PITA going up hills at 45 mph in 3rd gear.
@rileyrice98864 жыл бұрын
Coming from a pretty beat 22RE, I thought the hassle of the swap was worth it for the pretty moderate gains, but that depends on what you want. The 3rz gets 20mpg and pulls steep mountain passes in 5th that I would be revving in 3rd in before. If you've got a straight axle 85 and a complete harness it would be even easier and cheaper with a T100 oil pan. I did the 3rz because it's just an improved 22re -- super reliable, cheap, a lil more power, and pretty efficient. And the stock internals will take boost much better than the 22re would. I almost went with the 4.6 Chevy swap but found a 3rz core for super cheap.

@@rileyrice9886 Thanks for the reply. I'm not looking to win races, as I mentioned prior, just want to be able to go up hills faster than 45 mph @ 4500 rpm in 3rd gear. My setup is 4.56 gears, 33" MTs, W56. I just did a 4.7 tcase gear and I love it. If a 3RZ could pull 60-65 on hills in 4th gear instead of 45 in 3rd, that alone would be worth it. Getting a few more mpgs would make it even better.

What do you think you got in $$ in the rebuild? I'm looking at one of these JDM motors on ebay,but they are $2,000.I have a 96 Tacoma 4x4 that has 231,000 the camshaft seized up and sheared off the timing gear.The motor wasnt taken care of before I bought it.
@rileyrice98863 жыл бұрын
@@randyragland9218 I put about $1k into the rebuild but I did all the work myself with the LCE Master Rebuild kit. I could have done it cheaper if I had bought what I needed individually but I just bought the whole kit because it was my first engine build. I would say, if you've got a torque wrench and an engine stand, to go for it. It was pretty easy I thought.

Can you tell me what the helical gear on the front end of the exhaust cam is used for? I have the same gear on the cam in my 3RZ, and I've noticed it's not there on many other 3RZs.
@RobM1843 жыл бұрын
Distributor drive for the first gen 3rz. The later versions use distributorless ignitions
@rileyrice98863 жыл бұрын
Rob M is right. The helical gear you're seeing is for the distributor motors, which were 1995.5-1996 or 1997. They then changed the heads over to coil packs.
@MrRlbrown213 жыл бұрын
@@rileyrice9886 Thanks! Mine oddly has the same cam with the distributor drive gear, even though it is a DIC motor with no distributor. Had me scratching my head for a good while.

Do you have specific reasoning for going with a 3rz over a 2rz besides just what was available?
@rileyrice98863 жыл бұрын
3rz makes a bit more power than the 2rz, which has similar stats to the 22RE that I replaced. The 3rz has balance shafts, which I deleted with the LCE Balance Shaft Delete kit. I'm going to turbo it with a Haltech ECU soon. 2RZs are a little easier to find these days, though
@scramerpcgaming11433 жыл бұрын
I have a question, did you build the engine without balance shafts or vibration compensators?
@rileyrice98863 жыл бұрын
I used the LCE Balance Shaft Delete kit.
@StevenGbuh2 жыл бұрын
@@rileyrice9886 are you happy with it? Thought about doing it to mine during my rebuild
@rileyrice98862 жыл бұрын
@@StevenGbuh Yeah, I really don't notice any significant vibration without them. LCE claims it doesn't actually make any more power without them, but fewer rotating assemblies in an engine seems like a good thing to me.
@ryanlogan29112 ай бұрын
Hey bro If you want to go budget on the balance shaft delete, you can use a 2rz oil squiter to keep the chain oiled and use brass freeze plugs to cap the holes and seal off the oil gallies. Total cost $15
