The War in the Vendée occured during the French Revolution (1789). The Vendée Uprising (1793) was a conflict between the French Royalists and the First French Republic that was led by the Jacobins (led by Robespierre during his Reign of Terror). The Vendée Revolt can be seen as a savage conflict, a total war during the French Revolution. Napoleon called it the War of Giants.

Monsieur Maurice d'Elbée is famous for his actions after the Battle of Chemillé, on 11 April 1793: after the insurgents' victory, many of them planned to avenge their dead and slaughter the Republican prisoners (approx. 400). *D'Elbée tried to prevent them,* and eventually asked them to pray the *Our Father,* which they did; then, when they had reached the sentence *"And forgive us our trespasses,* *as we forgive those who have trespassed against us",* he interrupted them with the words: *"Do not lie to God!".* Moved by this reproach, his men turned away, and d'Elbée was able to save the prisoners. This episode has since become known as *"Le Pater d'Elbée" (d'Elbée's Pater Noster).* Following the Second Battle at Cholet (17 October 1793), *he was badly wounded.* Afterwards d'Elbée was transported first to Beaupréau, then the island of Noirmoutier. Three months later, the Republicans took control of the island and brought him before a military commission for a show trial. Condemned to death, *he was executed* by firing squad in the public square of the town of Noirmoutier. *He was shot sitting in a chair,* since he was unable to stand due to his fourteen wounds. *He was married to Marguerite Charlotte Holly Hauterive* on 17 November 1788 in the Church of the Gaubretière. *Marguerite d'Elbée was shot twenty days following the execution of her husband* in January 1794 and buried in a sunken road. The remains of her body were discovered by chance much later.

The fact that these people, the factions they created and...had much healthier and better relationship with each other, with love, loyalty and respect, even those who had bitter relationship with each other, decided to put it aside and be united for their goal, while Revolutionaries on the other hand were such a toxic people, even to each other with backstabbings, betrayals, lies and their ridiculous soap opera this fact says a lot about the true nature of both of them

@@HistoryHustle I quite a fan of French History as I've always been delighted by the tales of Napoleon even as a child. Though to be honest my favorite period in French History is probably the time of Philippe II Augustus: the man who arguably founded modern France. Though my favorite period in history is the Byzantine Era as I was always fascinated by their thousand year struggle to survive with them facing countless invasions, civil wars, and cycles of renewal and crisis. “Citizens of the Republic, there is no more Vendée. She has died beneath our sabre of freedom, with her women and children. I have buried her in the woods and marshes of Savenay. Following your orders, I have crushed her children under the hooves of my horses, and massacred her women … who will give birth to no further brigands now. There is not a single prisoner who could criticise my actions-I have exterminated them all….” General Westerman, December 21 1793 address to the Committee for Public Safety. The image of Robespierre being a bloodthirsty tyrant is propaganda from his political ennemies of the time and royalists. He never held absolute power , the Jacobins always shared power with other political factions , and the massacres were largely due to either mob violence or individual initiative of commanders. In fact , Robespierre had pushed for those commanders having commited massacres during the Vendée rebellion to be tried in justice

@@HistoryHustle Yes, from multiple sources. I think for the first time in a TV documentary back in the late '90s (I was a weird kid). It was at least briefly mentioned in my history textbooks covering the French Revolution (at least at the high school level), I think. I've read at least one short monography of the French revolution (although I can't remember the author and precise title). One of my favorite authors, Norman Davies in his "Europe: A History" not only writes about this conflict but specifically points out that the atrocities committed can be view as a foreshadowing of the crimes of the 20th-century totalitarian regimes. I'm also a fan of The Revolutions Podcast by Mike Duncan. :)

@jesusislordsavior6343
@jesusislordsavior6343 2 жыл бұрын
@@vlcr9259 So you say. But it's not as though I haven't read any French history or reflected upon it. From a Scriptural perspective, reality is a little more complex than human precept will often allow, and you seem to be arguing from human precept. Allow me to list a few interlocking considerations which demonstrate such complexity. 1. God is Sovereign over ALL of human history. He is also Judge of all human beings, human institutions likewise. We exist for and at His pleasure; He is not an instrument by which we are to achieve our purposes in the world. 'The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains; the world, and those who dwell in it.' (Psalm 24:1) 2. Secular (that is, worldly) States DO derive their authority ultimately from God. Romans 13:1 endorses subjection to State authority on the grounds that 'all authority is from God, and those which exist are established by God.' Taking this statement at face value, one must acknowledge the authority of BOTH monarchical and republican States over their citizens and/or subjects. It so happens that PAGAN Roman emperors were in charge in the time and place that Paul wrote. We also learn from Old Testament history and prophecy that God is able to OVERTURN regimes at will---------------often because of the oppressive weight of their iniquities. 3. God has NOT endorsed human monarchy as a 'preferred' regime type. Read 1st Samuel chapter 8. The Israelites envied the surrounding nations, who had kings, and demanded one for themselves. God was angry with them, taking this as a rejection of HIS leadership, for Israel up to that time had been a loose confederation of tribes held together by THEOCRATIC governance, mediated through the priests, prophets, and judges. The prophet Samuel WARNED the people of the oppressive burdens which kings would lay upon them in future generations. ALL these prophecies came true. JESUS CHRST, crucified and risen, is the TRUE King of Israel, and destined to be the universal Ruler of mankind. (Psalm 2:6) 'Behold, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain.' 4. The Bourbon kings of France persecuted the Reformed Churches and put intense pressure on the Jansenists, who represented a reforming tendency within Catholicism. In short, French Catholic kings supported the HETERODOX main wing of Roman Catholicism, which to this very day promotes false and un-Biblical doctrines. Louis Philippe employed a Protestant chief minister, Guizot, did he not ? The situation for Protestants seems to have improved as the 19th century progressed. 5. Was there genuine alignment between the ethics of Bourbon monarchy and the Word of God? Did kings really exercise spiritual leadership? Louis XIV was well-known as a serial adulterer, wasn't he? I don't suppose that he was atypical among monarchs in this regard. Ancient and Oriental potentates used to amass vast harems. Those who have much and exercise power are often granted special 'liberties', as though that were their right. Did Louis' prosecution of disastrous foreign wars represent a serious effort to implement the principle, 'love your neighbor as yourself'? The feudal system of land ownership, which we associate with the pre-revolutionary regime, stacks up poorly in comparison with Mosaic Old Testament property laws, written some 3,000 years earlier . Those laws were designed to keep land in the possession of smallholding families over the course of many generations, and to avoid excessive concentration of wealth. No Israelite was to become the indentured servant of another beyond a seven-year limit. Medieval serfdom was a barbaric system employed in many countries, even during the so-called 'Enlightenment' period. It had to go. 5. The abominable violence of the Revolution, particularly during the Jacobin dictatorship, ought to be deplored, not celebrated. I must share common ground with French royalists on that specific point. However false ideologies tend to prosper when justice has been denied to large groups of people for a long time. It is difficult to walk a path of evolutionary social change UNLESS (as in the case of the Abolitionist and Black Civil Rights movements in Anglophone countries) there is a strong Christian presence among those advancing the struggle. P.S. You might be surprised to learn of my interest in Albert de Mun, who seems to have been a politician of real substance, a controversial figure of the Third Republic who crossed lines rather successfully.
