At the end of the 1800's and fearing a possible French Naval attack the British built a number of modern forts along it's south coast. Together with defense installations from the Napoleonic period and many earlier forts. The Germans would not have founded a landing easy. Along the 13 klm of White cliffs (the nearest land to the French coast) any landing would have been impossible. The Battle of Britain began in July. D day was on 6 June and that was seen as being almost the latest date such a sea crossing could be mounted. That required the 2 largest navies in the world.

One of the things I learned about was some of the soldiers who were marching alongside Adolf as he went past bodies of civilians who were laying on the ground many besides being shot had also been burnt and the connection of the smell of death and the smell of the burnt skin made many in that group vomit but it made Adolf laugh and a lot of men in his group weren't at all amused at what he thought was funny. There were children and women though it was said they had turned and fired towards what they thought was fire coming from civilians but it was actually other German soldiers who were jumpy and their weapons accidently discharged, or so they claimed.

Colonel Khaddafi was right. He stood in the way of the invasion of Europe which is currently complete. He did some intense stuff but he was the rightful leader of a sovereign nation. The "revolution" that toppled the regime was entirely staged and in no way organic. Shame on the three letter agencies that murdered the Colonel.

Now I need to check what my grandfather was doing in 1938. ... He was nine. His father was AWOL and drinking in Punta Arenas. Guess we are safe. It is interesting to know, though, the role that earlier immigrants had in this. Had this come out successfully it would have triggered a north-south civil war, and perhaps a later struggle between Ibañez and von Mareés. The 30s were already crazy enough in Chile. The country was struck quite strongly by WW1 and the depression, with saltpetter, the spoiles of the War of the Pacific, becoming effectively worthless. Up to that point, the proletarian class had been growing as more and more people immigrated to northern cities, leading to tensions and even massacres, sich as the one in 1907 in Iquique. We then had a "socialist republic" that lasted a couple of months in 1932 and before that Ibañez had staged a coup and implanted corporativism in the country, plus an uprising right after Ibañez left power. By the time Alessandri returned to power in late 1932 he seems to have made every bit of effort to restore some stability. I can only imagine he must have felt justified to use ruthless force when the nacistas attempted to interrupt the unstable stability. In the aftermath of Ibañez's withdraw from the presidential ballot he called his suporters to vote for Aguirre Cerda, who won by a margin below 1%. Cerda ushered in a decade of Radical rule in Chile, in which the country faced WW2 and the opening years of the Cold War, and arguably set the stage for the political polarization leading to Allende's victory in 1970 and Pinochet's coup in 1973. Hope you enjoyed your visit to Chile.

The chilean flag has a "little" influence on the cuban Céspedes flag or Demajagua flag, which is a chilean flag with shuffled colors, as a thanks gesture to the chilean support to the cuban independence through the chilean politician and state man Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna.

Great video! We probably need to talk more about the sacking of Lima and the Campaign of the Breña in chilean schools, we kind of overlook them as far as I recall. Or at leats it is intermingled with internal politics which makes it dull for teenagers. One thing I would correct, though, is the outcome of the Iquique battle. We usually divide it in two engagements that happened in the area the same day, the naval engagement at the Iquique Bay propper and the combat of Punta Gruesa, which happened just a few miles off. In the first one the Chilean cobet Esmeralda was sunk by the ironclad Huascar, while in the latter a schooner named Covadonga managed to outmaneuver and run aground the Independencia, forcing the peruvian sailors to scuttle the ironclad. All things considered, it was a fair exchange for Chile, and the last-stand defense of the crew of the Esmeralda served to arouse national spirits. But it was not the closing stage of the first chapter of the war, rather the start of the Maritime Campaign, which ended in the Battle of Angamos with the capture of the Huascar and the death of Captain Miguel Grau, after six months of keeping the chilean navy on its toes and unable to secure logistic lines at sea. According to historian Gonzalo Bulnes: ""I can never estate enough the importance of the dominion of the sea which was conquered so ruthless and gloriously by our seamen. The War of the Pacific had been defined at Angamos.""

In my opinion, Perú managed to use its officials more effectively, which Grau being at the fray and Cáceres leading guerrilla forces in the mountains. The latter effectively cut off any chilean attempt to settle the conflict for the best part of 1883 and 1884. In between, General Juan Buendía scored an impressive victory by ambushing the chilean forces near the town of Tarapacá, by using intelligence and the urge for water that could only be obtained in that place. On the other hand, chilean commanders seemed to focus a lot more on logistics and strategy, rather than tactics, biding their time and not rushing when possible, but giving decisive blows as in Arica. In the long run that approach payed off.

I've seen home movies of the Einsatzchgroupen children or brothers of the SS death squads where they have their stuffed animals being hung above a gallows that had sticks underneath it to burn the Jews as the paper on the stuffed animals were being slaughtered with the name Juden on each of them. I know that something I'm not surprised with things like Brothers Grimm and how horrific so many stories like that was and even the Wagner epic opera is also crafted along a similar kind of romanticizing of death and pain and horrific torture onto people as long as it is not their own people. This is nothing new, the earliest mention of things like this that I found was brought about by Edward Longshanks in the UK. They were brought into the country because the people living there had no idea about trade between other nations nor how to build up their nations but then again they also didn't really know about law and order either. Back when we had King David and King Solomon the Brits were running around savages without a written language or any kind of society that kept people free from the anarchy that the strongest barbarian of their midst ruled all.

I found one mistake, in the battle of Iquique Chile and Perú ended even because the peruvian sink La Esmeralda, an old ship, and the Chilean only sunk La Independencia, but the bulk of both navies continued to fight until Naval Battle of Angamos when finally the chilean navy took El Huascar, the peruvian flagship, and it's admiral was killed (Miguel Grau).

In the first Yugoslavia, where a Serb was king, Croats were oppressed, beaten on the road by policemen, just because they were Croats, they were second-class citizens, the Ustashas changed that, they overdid it, but if they had not been Ustashas, the Croats would have the same scenario (Jasenovac), in my father's village the Chetniks killed them from house to house, they killed my great-grandfather and his brother in their house in front of the women, then the Ustashas came to the village and everything was peaceful, so the coin has two sides, every reaction calls for a reaction, Croats did not kill Serbs for no reason

the rebellion was started as a religious movement against gaddafis supposed heresy, fuelled by a years long cia smear campaign within the country, the rebels were created and supplied by the us, reinforced by foreign agents, several prominant rebels after said they regretted their choices and wished they fought for him instead, it was not a popular revolution
