Vasily Zaitsev (Jude Law), a young soldier in the Red Army, arrives in Stalingrad in February 1942 along with other soldiers. They are sent to the front lines, but to do that, they have to cross the river. A lot of soldiers, completely frightened, are jumping out of the boats, and are immediately shot by Russian officers.

It would have been easier for the Stukas to bomb the landings on the east bank of the Volga. German artillery would have been more effective during the daylight hours, which is why the Volga flotilla did most of it's work at night. The 62nd Army established a very effective flak defense belt on the Volga crossings, and the Trans-Volga artillery did much to keep German forces away from the crossing sites. It was a desperate struggle in the early days of the fighting, but the effort continued to a successful, if considerably bloody conclusion.

Eventually the Germans bombing and art was not as effective as the Soviets determined the best idea was to hug the enemy which meant that to get the front lines as close as possible some places as close as a few metres this meant the Germans couldn't use heavy bombing or art without hitting there own forces.

What's not much known in the West is that the civilian population was not evacuated from the city. They were kept at their factories, until the Germans came. The civilian population suffered alongside the troops of both sides. They had well over 90% casualties. More than 35,000 human remains have been found, in just the last 40 years.

Not exactly. Before 23d of August Soviets evacuated 1/4 of Stalingrad population. Order to evacuate immediately the rest was written on 24th of August, but it was too late to do it properly since Luftwaffe burned the city the day before. But still tens of thousands of civilians were evacuated after that. Evacuation was incomplete and late, but it is mistake to write, that "civilian population was not evacuated". But, yes, workers had to work on military factories, especially tank factories, until the Germans came. Some tanks received crew and fought immediately after production.

They did heavy lifting, but they didn’t do THE heavy lifting. The Soviets fought on a single unified front near to their industrial centers, making logistics for them much simpler. This was also helped by the fact the US basically equipped their areas logistics train and provided the Soviets their entire aviation fuel stock for the war along with vast numbers of combat vehicles and planes. The Soviets did a total of nothing at sea, the convoys had no Soviet escorts, and the US and UK did the heavy lifting in the Battle of Atlantic, and the US did THE heavy lifting in the Pacific, sending armies and fleets across every ocean and fought with more man-per-man effectiveness than any of the warring powers.

The idea of switching sides or surrendering is often oversimplified. You can very easily be stopped by your own troops, and even if you make it past them, there is no guarantee that the enemy will take you. There is still a high possibility that they will kill you regardless, be it in the heat of battle or an unwillingness to take prisoners.

Actually, in this period of the battle Soviet troops never crossed Volga in a daylight. Only at night. Because Germans had already occupied considerable part of Western side of the river. They could observe the other side clearly, including area, opposite to rather small Soviet beachhead, since Western side is considerably higher. In daylight ordinary infantry with machine guns and mortars would have massacred much of troops, concentrated on Eastern side for river crossing. Even without Luftwaffe or heavy artillery. Even before boarding. Volga in this part had nearly 600-800 metres wide only. Too far to shoot one soldier with a bullet. Not impossible, but you needed very lucky shot in that war to do it. Close enough to shoot and shell with mortar lots of soldiers, battalion or regiment, concentrated in a small area for boarding on boats. But both Soviet and American movies depict this maneuver in the daylight. First of all, it is easier technically. But there are also ideological reasons. Soviet filmmakers in 1949 ("The Battle of Stalingrad") wanted to show perfect example of Red Army bravery and contempt for danger. This American movie wanted to show Red Army commanders and commissars as fanatical butchers. Both was historically wrong at least regarding this case.

Soviets are lucky that the communication between the Japanese and German forces wasn’t good. Had Germany and Japan attacked the Soviet Union together the outcome of the war may have been a lot different. @@Demonxman well once the US oil embargo took place, their reserves were expected to run out by 43. So they had two options by that point with the army supporting one and the navy the other. 1. Attempt to expand into Siberia with an attack on the Soviet Union that could’ve been coordinated with the Germans and Operation Barbarossa. 2. Expand into the South Pacific and Southern Asia and target territories that the Europeans couldn’t immediately reinforce with Hitler dominating Europe. Siberia was nowhere near developed enough to utilize any potential resources and would’ve been a dead end for the oil needed to fuel the Japanese war machine. In addition the border skirmishes with the Soviet Union, most notably the battle of Khalkin Gol, proved the IJA was nowhere near a match for the Red Army including the fewer divisions stationed in the Far East. Between those factors and the Navy having influence, the decision was made to go South towards the pacific and with the US being the only major power capable of responding to Japanese aggression, the decision was made to preemptively wipeout the means American naval power in the pacific and force a quick victory via the attack on Pearl Harbor.
