Those Li cells have an integral "polyfuse". It is a temperature dependent resistor (just under the (+) terminal). Without that, a short circuit across one WILL cause a catastrophic failure (fire, possible explosion). That's why the seemingly odd behavior when they get warm from use. Yep, I love those Ultimates! This is fascinating. I've been reading the Energizer Ultimate Lithium data sheet. The batteries will provide such a high load that they contain an internal overheat protection (as previously commented 3 years ago by glasstronic). They function best in a 10% duty cycle (for instance, 1A for 10 seconds, and then 90 seconds to cool off).

Those batteries have qwirk in that they unload test at 1.77volts. When my trail cam will no longer take photos they are at 1.57 volts. Keep this in mind when testing batteries to use later. Otherwise best batteries I have used.
@dcarrera015 жыл бұрын
But this is the nature of the Lithium - Iron sulfide chemistry of the batteries. Their open circuit voltage is around 1.8 V but under load it drops to around 1.5 V which is exactly what you need for them to be a drop-in replacement for traditional AA batteries. They would not even be able to legally sell them as AA if the batteries did not run at around 1.5 V.

@1ohtaf15 жыл бұрын
Normal alkaline batteries build up their internal resistance as they deplete, so they are putting out less power as they get used, which could be the reason why you see similar run times with both.
@OleJacobsen4 жыл бұрын
The difference is weight is due to the different materials/chemicals used. A Duracell alkaline is 22 g and the Energizer Lithium is 14 g. The downside (apart from price) is that lithium batteries have a dramatic "end life" curve whereas alkaline batteries decay more slowly and partially recover. Bu the main reason I use Lithium batteries is that they NEVER leak.

I went to the lithium AA in my trail cameras a couple of years back. I believe they do last longer than any other battery I've tried. I did discover a strange failure just yesterday. My trail cameras use 8 batteries in series for a 12 vdc supply to the contact points in the battery drawer of my cameras. I found my camera inoperative, dead. I used a FLUKE 87 multimeter to measure voltage of each battery. I have some that have been completely drained and some were still in the 1.5 + vdc range and I have one I'd like someone to explain. The battery has reversed polarity and measures 2.5+ vdc??? E.C.Smith USA

The recharge time seems high. The thing about primary lithium cells is their ability to output current. The internal resistance is so low that the physical temperature is the only real thing providing a limit. That is why they are fused. If an alkaline takes 5 seconds to recharge the caps in the flash, the lithium cells should be as fast as NiCad. For low resistance, nothing beats NiCads. You get less life, but there is no other option for power delivery with AAA, AA, C, D and 9V. You have to go to lithium-ion to get even close, but lithium ion are 3.7v

The chemistry of a single Lithium cell is 3.6 volts so I'm not sure what they do to bring it down in the AA package. Some kind of voltage divider or resistor?
@dcarrera015 жыл бұрын
No. Batteries that say "Lithium" are not all the same. The Lithium batteries in the AA format have a different chemistry from the "cells" you're thinking of. They both have Lithium in the anode, but the cathode is different. The Lithium batteries that look like a button usually have MgO2 on the cathode and a nominal voltage of 3V (open circuit voltage = 3.3V) but for the AA format they use FeS2 on the cathode which does have a nominal voltage of 1.5 V (open circuit voltage = 1.8 V).

You absolutely should not use alkalines that were initially depleted in such a high drain device. When you put these in something like a mouse after abusing them with that flash, they are very prone to leaking. You should not be using primary cells as anything but emergency backup. There is no scenario where anything but NIMH cells make sense with such a device.

What do you think about this coment on these batteries, from a KZbinr : "The Energizer ULTIMATE LITHIUM battery is a very dangerous battery and should not have been produced in the first place. This battery has no smart voltage sensing circuit built into the battery that would otherwise allow it to be recharged unattended. This battery can be safely recharged up to a certain voltage, but you must not leave the battery unattended should you decide to recharge it to its original charge. In a nutshell, Energizer should have known better than to produce a battery like this with no smart voltage sensing circuit built into the battery itself. This is very irresponsible of Energizer as this battery is a time bomb waiting to explode. A lithium battery like this is much more dangerous than other lithium cells that do contain voltage sensing circuits which tell battery chargers when to cease charging unlike the Energizer ULTIMATE LITHIUM battery, which does not. There is a warning is extremely FINE PRINT that tells the user that this battery can explode even if it is installed backwards. Energizer is extremely irresponsible in this regard. Batteries are quite often inserted backwards by accident all over the world. I've done it, and everyone else has done this too. How many homes and other property are going to have to burn up as a result of such irresponsibility?"

@PS4 Custom Gamer Not to be antagonistic, but you're wrong. I've personally tested this myself. If you drain both a regular alkaline battery and an Energizer Ultimate Lithium at the same rate, say 500mA, the lithium battery has significantly more power. And, then, if you do the same drain test at a much lower rate, say 100mA, the power difference is even greater. Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries are _the_ most powerful alkaline-style batteries you can have for any device whether high-drain or low-drain.
