Daylighting-the use of windows or skylights for natural lighting and temperature regulation-is one building strategy that can save money for homeowners and businesses. Highly efficient, strategically placed windows maximize the use of natural daylight in a building, lowering the need for artificial lighting without causing heating or cooling problems.

Daylighting is much more than installing lots of windows. We started creating specialized daylighting units for top lighting from the roofs that harvested the free sulight and pushed it down through tunnels to the pyramid shaped lenses on the bottom, thus creating a dead air space to reduce heat and then spread out the light into the rooms. We have installed more than 20,000 square feet of these units, many in federal facilities where energy managers realized the fantastic benefit of high tech daylight units. We have worked with the Department of Energy and won awards. A two foot by two foot passive square daylighting unit is easy and economical to install either in new construction or renovated buildings. As architects learn more about how daylight harvesting is used to cut energy costs and provide beautiful natural light, companies will be able to dramatically cut their costs for lighting a building. If 40% of a buildings cost is electric lighting, it seems logical that turning off those lights benefit not only the building owner, but the utilities who are trying to keep power on during disasters and high use times, like heat-related crises in California where blackouts are becoming more common. For a business, if you have lighting you can still have crews working even if you lose power. The benefits are dramatic by using passive daylighting.

hi, I participated in a compitition about daylighting and I need some important resources that can help me get to know more about this concept. Can you share some sources or send links related to them? thank you..

My house faces East and I get hardly any sunlight in as its a Duplex, except for the hotafternoon sun at the front, so I have installed Skylights and opened my porch with see through panels. I hate dark rooms. Thanks for technology.

I'm really tired of the northern, cold climate bias in energy efficiency videos. South facing windows absolutely DO let direct sunlight in during summer, and in the southern US, that dramatically adds to the costs of cooling a building. Heat-reflecting technology and good insulation is what really matters in warm areas.

I think the video is talking about businesses' it really does not mean that south facing and north facing windows do not let light in. Homes really especially do benefit from North and south facing windows expecially with drapes that are tranparent or translucent in some ways. You are in the right path I think dMb and that is a good comment
