As in, are all nutrients retained as they are passed on as opposed to energy ?

Hello! The amounts of nutrients are the same across the Earth as a whole. A loss of a particular nutrient in one area means a gain for another area due to conservation of matter. A good example of this is Carbon. Historically, most of the carbon in the world has been underground in the form of sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels. However, as we extract and burn fossil fuels, we are decreasing the amount of carbon underground and increasing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. The carbon is "reshuffled" from solid or liquid fossil fuels into gaseous compounds like Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Methane, etc. The number of carbon atoms is still the same, but the location has changed. Unfortunately, this "relocation" of carbon is causing major problems. We need to make serious changes if we want to survive as a species long-term : ( -BOGO

How are nutrients transferred from one biotic component to the next??

As an example, let's look at nitrogen as a nutrient. Let's say there's a plant. It gets its nitrogen from the soil, and now it's inside the plant. If another animal came and ate the plant, the nitrogen is then inside the animal. The animal will eventually die and decay, which will then release that nitrogen, and it will go back into the soil. So the nitrogen is carried from the soil, to the plant, to the animal, and back into the soil. Hope that helps :)

So nutrient flow and energy flow is different?

There is no flow of nutrients, only a cycle of nutrients. It is energy that is lost, but nutrients that are recycled.

They are reused when an organism dies. They enter the ecosystem again via decomposers
