Wow A+ project with upscale Energy Analysis!! FC (Fuel Cell) is great because of ED! As mentioned Energy Density (ED) of Toyota FC H2 tanks is 8X more than Li-Ion today, but in the future when an electric battery ED would be the same all [complication and Platinum-Super-Expense] of FC would be a history!! Wright now all ocean ships must have the FC instead of Diesel or nuc. reactor! Amazing Plug&Play universal (compatible with any catamarans!) automatic Pair-Sails would be forever. Like a book that you will see in each family in future as a piece of our History. By the way, Solar-Sail tested and works really well in a spaceship -- gone with Solar Wind and NEVER reaching Light Speed. Even a mechanical sail allows a sailboat to exceed the speed of the wind.

I'm interested in building a 50' solar powered trimaran with about 40-50m² of solar panels as. Similar to the ILAN voyager or adastra. I believe this concept can work well but you still need a backup for winter in higher latitudes or when you need to go fast. So I'm very interested in the hydrogen fuel cell. Are there any papers based on your project or articles that outline the viability of using hydrogen instead of an ICE outboarder or electric generator? Is this viable yet? I love you are experimenting with this but I'd love to know how economically viable this is or going to be in the near future. I estimate I would only need a 5-10kW generator.

Bright Future.. Never liked apocalyptic Sci-Fi. In reality: Insurance company will never insure your ocean class trimaran w/o backup diesel onboard. I would ask energy-observer.org how they got insured the Experimental Cat. They did not use Lloyds insurance Co. , for sure ;)

Open Question: Would there be a bigger faster impact, if a push was done to make personal watercraft like this or adapting our larger shipping vessels? My own personal opinion is that we should push to change the large ships first, but Humans often need reminded of things, meaning maybe more interest would be generated by making more small changes to personal watercraft. I do think that the first shipping fleet that outfits green, will be the next dominant shipping company. With the potential to sail for decades without ful costs, system changes could easily pay for themselves as well as help reduce our emissions.

Smart. Norway i struggling getting tne ferrys over to electric. They need to charge so they need longer time resting. Maybe an hydrogen combo can solve the problem. I like the new hydrofoil tec. like Candela boats. Saves up to 70% energy ?

When You Needed More of Me, I Had Nothing Left When you needed more of me, I had nothing left, Drained by the weight of endless requests. The sun was hidden behind heavy skies, The wind fell silent, as if in disguise. But deep in my core, where energy sleeps, There’s a pulse, a promise, a dream that keeps. Solar beams waiting to rise with the dawn, Wind in the wings of a quiet storm gone. I’ve stored what I can, in the still of the night, Hydrogen’s whispers of future light. Batteries drained, but with hope they’ll revive, The charge they need to keep us alive. With the right parts, with the perfect design, Sooner than later, I’ll draw every line. For when I’ve recharged, when I’ve gathered it all, I’ll rise to your call, I’ll power your walls. Sustainable strength, an infinite source, Through sun, wind, and hydrogen’s force. So wait just a moment, the cycle will turn, And all that was empty will start to burn.

Batteries more efficient than Hydrogen production. However as research great
@ENERGYOBSERVER

Thank you for your comment Brian. Actually, our philosophy has always been to combine different technologies rather than opposing them; the double storage of batteries and hydrogen aboard the Energy Observer demonstrates the complementarity of storage and the distribution of use. For example, the 63 kg of hydrogen produced and stored on board Energy Observer can provide 1 MWh of electricity and 1 MWh of thermal energy that can be used for heating and hot water. If Energy Observer were to store her energy using solely traditional batteries, she would weigh twice as much! The batteries provide short term immediate power, whilst the hydrogen provides long-term autonomy. For equal weight, hydrogen storage contains 7.35 times more power than the batteries, which is a considerable advantage for mobility, whether it be on the sea, land or in the air. We hope this answer helps 🙂 Take care.

Not kilowhaaat hour, please correct to kilowot hour pronunciation. Do you have stats on pollution savings for the miles completed as a comparison to a conventional powered ship? Also noise pollution in the sea as a comparison to a conventional ship? Congratulations on an amazing ship.

mine would have at least 1MWh worth of batteries. Tesla ones weigh 1/3 of the ones you are using, and probably you can push them to 1/4 without crash structures. Solar panels, variable pitch vertical wind turbines, and sail on hydrofoils. And possibly more efficient propulsion like the one from deepspeed. Hydrogen just doesn't make sense in term of efficiency.

We hope this answer helps! All the best

Never ceases to amaze. Inexplicably though, you misspelled and mispronounced so many words despite the seemingly proper English accent and association with a scientific endeavour: - _electrolysis_ is pronounced eh-lec-TRO-luh-sis, not eh-lec-tro-LY-sis - the "a" in _watt_ is pronounced like that in "father", not like that in "bat" - the "au" in _automated_ is pronounced like the "aw" in "awful", not like "oh" - "navigations" is not a word; it is always "navigation", as it is a mass noun and not a count noun - _energetical,_ while technically a word, is rare and doesn't mean "related to energy". It means "full of energy or lively", so "energetical consumption" makes no sense; you want "energy consumption". - "electrolizer" is not a word; it's supposed to be _electrolyser_ - "kWh" is supposed to be written as "kW⋅h" (with the multiplication dot), and is read as "kilowatt-hour(s)", not "kilowatt(s)" - "Kg" means "kelvin-grams", which is obviously nonsense. Like in the kW⋅h example, the symbol for _kilo-_ is k (not "K", which means kelvin), so it should be "kg". - the "dup" in _duplicate_ is pronounced like "dyoop", not like "cup" - "service boats projects" is incorrect; it should be "service boat projects". - "legislations" is similarly not a word; it should be _legislation_ since it is a mass noun as well - "fine particles emissions" is similarly incorrect; it should be "fine particle emissions".

I admire all innovations and progress. However, this is dead-end (cul de sac) of using solar/wind power. Conversion electricity to hydrogen and then back to electricity is so inefficient, that it doesn't make sense. Not today. Present technology of rechargeable batteries are good enough to store big amount of energy in small place, with much higher efficiency and above all - WITHOUT RISK OF EXPLOSION or fire. It's like developing and run extremely expensive and inefficient Space Shuttle program today, when we already have brutally less cheaper and efficient Falcon 9/FH technology. Moreover, boats are not stay on solid ground, there are endless vibrations, movements, various forces, humid air, very corrosive sea water... I wish to be NOT on board, when any hydrogen leakage or accident happen. Really not.

The hydrogen is indeed total waiste of energy, no advantage there compared to batteries. Check the planetsolar boat that already showed batteries work fine. Don't get the sail, they are causing shadow on the solar panels....
