Perhaps, Iroh's spirit was able to resist Korra's negative influence on the spirits around her for the same reason. Thanks to his life-changing travels around the world, Iroh gained undoubtedly strong, unbendable morals that could allow him to resist the negative influences around him, both in life and in the afterlife.

I hear what you're saying however I would venture a thought both complimentary to and contradictory to your statement. Simply, that moral steadfastness is indeed a quality that is needed in order to achieve an unbendable spirit. However, I believe it is more than simple moral steadfastness that one needs. I believe one would also need a surety of self and a knowledge and acceptance of ones connectedness to the natural world. As stated in Avatar: The Last Airbender, "everything is connected." This fundamental principal I believe is likewise fundamentally important to an aspiring energy bender. As such, in order to realize and truly grasp this truth one must not only know and realize the connection between all things but also must have a strong sense of self to know and realize how ones self is connected to everything else and how everything else is connected to themselves. Moral steadfastness is simply one aspect of a sense of self. Just musing here but these are the thoughts that come to mind. Let me know what you think.

in my opinion there are probably a lot of elements lost to time. in the beginnings part 2, the spirit guarding the oasis tells wan that there were "dozens of them", and assuming each one represents a seperate element, that means there are at very least 7 missing elements if "dozens" wasn't too much of an exageration. My theory is that Wan explored as much of the world as he could in a two year time frame, but with such a massive world to search for such (relatively) small places it is to be expected that Wan missed a few. And if Wan couldn't find them there would be no way to tell the humans to abandon the lion turtles, which were probably wiped out eventually. perhaps several extiction events such as the 100 year war had already occurred before people even decided to start writing down what was going on around them. It's always possible and I feel like it's a realistic theory tbh.

@@Cxntrxl Hey dude! Late to the party, but i personally think there wouldn't be any other disciplines despite there being enough empty plot. In central and eastern Asia, the main 'elements' are fire, water, earth, air, and soul(according to Hindu mythology, which was a big culture influenced by asian beliefs and influencing other cultures) There isn't space from a cultural and practical standpoint, and also from a storytelling standpoint. With Ravaa as his guide, he should have been able to find all the elements with incredible efficiency. We would've at least heard of other elements. This means that it is reasonable to conclude there are no other elements, which would also be better for storytelling. Taking advantage of plotholes to later add more content is very unlike the creators of avatar, and they would get many callouts for PIS

To me I always imagined energy bending as the way people could survive spirits. The problem was that not everyone had unbendable spirits, anyone who had such likely decided to lead the rest to the lion turtles, their teachers and savors. The lion turtles then agreed to house these humans and the energy benders would die with time. There was no need for them, The lion turtles did their job for them.

Korra is a good Avatar to hit the reset button. She naturally came into three elements from an early age. She slowly came into Air and being so close to Tenzin and the new Airbenders. She’s going to have a strong spiritual connection. That’s not even considering her connection with Raava and mastering energy bending. She doesn’t have thousands of years of Avatar experiences to call upon anymore. Her journey in the Spirit World will be of huge value to next generations.

When in energy form, korra only bent water, this is because it was her natural element. ravva contains only 3 elements at a time, while the fourth is contained within the human soul. raava carries the 3, the human carries the one. this is why korra could still bend without raava, but ONLY water.

Its was written in the Avatar Encyclopedia on Nick's website. I also didn't believe it and had to check the archives. Look up the reference links on the Avatar Fandom Wiki about Lion Turtles. Its currently reference #3. Whether or not the Encyclopedia is canon is another story, especially since its been delete from the website and the only copy is a fan who archived it.

If I was a writer, I would separate energy benders into types according to Chi or Jing. Almost pre-element benders. Negative charge like water and earth. Positive charge like air and fire. Different abilities and the 2 types of energy must be put in balance or disaster happens.

I think it may not be specifically inherent to waterbending just because they found it out, and you can probably find out a connection of it to each element aside from water, like how the Dai Li might have used it to brainwash Ba Sing Se's immigrants or how the original Air Nomads might have pacified the spirits. Fire is difficult, though, since the only Fire Lion Turtle known didn't mind lending their firebending to "defend" humans from spirits rather than teaching them to coexist

I would assume that Earth Benders would disperse their natural energy through the environment to create a calming area that disperses the energy of the spirits. As I'm reading this, I find myself captivated by your logical explanation of something esoteric in my experience. I delved in Reiki and Mantak Chia multi discipline. The energy bending is fascinating in so many levels and I see why it it is limited for access. Many practitioners of chi based disciplines not only practice one thing. Patience, forgiveness, laser focus and discipline are also some aspects of their craft. If energy bending can be attained and used, those aspects will also be called into play. We, humans, are flawed,emotional and maybe destructive at times but could we not also be much more? As for me, I am just remembering what my childhood was and forgiving myself for not growing up from that experience. In myself , I feel my energy bending with my will and (x- trying) to transform into someone better in the future.

I think Iro wasn't affected because of how spiritually zen he was; in life, he was by far the most spiritual person in the Fire Nation, and overall one of the more chill and spiritual characters in the whole show, so I reckon he's just resistant as a result.

I just assumed that it was because he was human spirit, which is fundamentally different from other spirits. Human spirits probably aren't as connected to the energy of the spirit world in their early years of living there as those who had been born there and lived there for far longer. Also, humans are able to quell their own darkness by way of controlling our emotions so that they don't influence our rationale, so I don't see why we shouldn't still be able to control how the darkness of the spirit world around us should affect us even *without* a physical body.

Energy bending is very mysterious simply because we don't have very much information on it. Likewise, much of Bending is confusing because of the sheer lack of data. Coupled with this lack of data, is the numerous contradictions that appear of Korra. This was a really great video. I'm really happy you addressed the fact that simply don't know everything. Personally, I'd love to see Energy Bending used in the Spirit World in a similar way to "Kung Fu Panda 3".

I guess that some basic uses for energybending involves bending one's own chi and spiritual energy directly, allowing the user to shoot blasts of pure chi at opponents. An energybender could for example do something as basic as the Hadouken, or as advanced as the Kamehameha Wave.

I always wished a 5th nation to appear in Korra if there was another season. The Spirit nation where they Energy bend and live with the Spirits, perhaps more people fused with spirits like the animal shaped humans when Spirits go through them and theres other abilities like Tokuga from LoK: Turf Wars. Remember when Aang was fighting Hei Bai Black and White Spirit. It just blasts of energy r concussive energy and moved Super fast. Imagine someone gaining those abilities after fusing with another Panda Spirit. Also I thought I heard that Iroh would only live 3yrs in the Spirit world before the Spirit World turns him into something else. It seems to me that energy bending is functional and fundamental to all other forms of bending. It could be argued that in order to send the other element one must bend energy, even if one does SII unwittingly. This is why chi blocking is able to cut off a person’s bending abilities temporarily. To bend the elements requires the proper flow of energy through ones own being.

Am I the only one who thinks that elemental bending arts are, in a way, energybending? Since there are no known boundaries, then energy in everything that are utilized by benders is still energy bending. That is, of course, if all elements have energy and I know it does. chi, chakra, yin and yang are mostly mentioned in the series as energies. I suppose, lightning and heat bending would be the closest, by uncle Iroh's explanation to zuko which works as well with Sozin's bending of heat from the volcano. By Iroh's explanation, waterbending too is rooted to energybending- turning your opponent's energy against them; that which airbending seems to be the closest elemental application as well. Am I stupid? HAHAHA

@@franciscoguinledebarros4429 I was more thinking just neutralizing the element used against them like if an Earthbender was lifting a boulder they could neutralize the Chi the Earthbender is putting into the Boulder making it drop (side note if you're unaware the explanation for how bending works is the bender's Chi is extended into the element they're bending which is how they can control it). They could do that but can't smash through walls, dig through dirt, or bend Earth as they aren't an Earthbender and this would apply to all the other elements. I think it would fit better into the Avatar universe than Korra's explanation of *sigh* laser beams, and I think my explanation would be fairly balanced as they can neutralize elements but not bend them and if they want to take a person's bending or do anything to mess with a person's Chakras or energy they have to get in close and have an unbending spirit or they'll be destroyed. But that's just my opinion and thanks for the feedback.

I like to think the reason energy bending was lost was because it was no longer needed. the purpose of energy bending could of been to heal the damage caused by certain spirits since it has no offensive capabilities unless you had bending to subdue an opponent.

What pisse...people don't seem to understand is that chi is essentially energy, that energy is essentially spirit, "that" "spiritbending" is waterbending, that water is not just an element but a gaseous state / gas as well, that gas is basically just spacetime / air. Airbenders bend the water or are technically waterbenders. Waterbenders/spiritbenders/energybenders/chibenders are airbenders.

Korra could restore bending but couldn't take it away. I think it was because her spirit wasn't unbendable like Aang's, she's showed remarkable improvement character wise but energy bending as a gift from Aang is a little too much. Since Aang was the last Avatar before Korra, it would make sense of why she has it as the Avatar State is the knowledge of every Avatar. It may be that Aang was the first avatar to energybend. It just felt like Korra didn't earn it while Aang did.

If you watch both series, they both earned it the same way, it was just given to them. So i don't get the argument of aang earned it while korra didn't. Plus she experience the feeling worst than death when amon took away her bending, since she has learned to be compassionate, taking away someone's bending is not an option for her. I personally think (and maybe I'm wrong) but energybending is what the lion turtles have always done in the anime depiction. The giving of elements in old times back when Wan lived and taking away of those elements was just that of energy bending. It was something ONLY the lion turtles could do. The people were given the element of fire, air, water, and earth respective to their location, however the lion turtles themselves never used the elements. In itself just having the elements doesn't count you a "bender" either. You learn the art of bending by learning from the spirits and animal who control it and use it as an extension of themselves. Similar to how a language with no syntax or structure is just a code. By this I think that Aang only knows part of the principles of energy bending, because by this logic he could potentially have learned to take AND give bending at will.......BUT then again that was a huge plot point in Korra, wasn't it?🤷🏿‍♂️

Energy bending is not something that was ever taught to humans. They may have been aware of its existence if they were spiritual enough, but it seems like the kind of thing that is beyond elusive. Someone who specifically wants to bend energy probably can’t get to it because to want it you would likely abuse it and thus could never be enlightened enough to reach it. The four elements are something humans have experience with and some understanding of. For good or bad the turtles trusted humans with the 4 elements. Only the most spiritual of beings were able to unlock those ultra high order abilities like flight or astral projection. Iroh, also very spiritual, developed lightning bending. He taught it to others and it was abused. Imagine if everyone had the ability to bend each other’s spiritual essence. That would be too much. The lion turtles protected humans, so they wouldn’t allow them to have such powerful knowledge knowing they would likely destroy everything.

I have predictions about the next avatars, and the advancing technology brought on by republic city. The next earth avatar will be part of the expanding technological spread of advances, including advanced steam-powered machinery like something out of a steampunk novel or gearpunk setting, and how earthbending refinery of metals allows for circuitry and basic computers, which will lilely be later in an abnormally long life, if Kyoshi is any indication; The next Fire Avatar will be in a Rainy city, Chrome vehicles and Neon Everything futuristic setting where they or someone they know will learn to use lightningbending in Code, and the next air avatar will deal with air pollution and the re-establishment of spirituality in a physically advanced, but spiritually stagnant world, much like our own. I hope these themes, or similar, can be explored in future Avatar Series'.

You're totally right about the inconsistency with the spirits. In ALTA many spirits had an "Angry" or "Wild Form", but this didn't mean they were ever evil. In Korra however, it seems like any spirit could turn "Evil" because of outside influence. And it seemed very easy to turn a spirit dark, but very hard to turn a spirit back to normal. I feel like these "evil forms" weaken the world building because they only serve season 2's story arc and nothing else.

Except none of the spirits in ALoK were evil. The dark spirits were chaotic because they had been thrown out of balance by overwhelming negativity. Just like what happened to Hei Bai. Anyone who says the spirits are inconsistent didn't pay attention.

Vaatu easily turned spirits dark because he was so big. Raava needs wan help to return them back because she was getting smaller, it is all about balance, remember when raava and vaatu were equal in size, no spirit turned dark, they just ran away from the fight.

Little do you all know. Energy bending is a real thing. I do it daily to stay ina good mood and it can be utilized on others and nature to influence the elements through magnetic field control that extends from the body, starting in the heart as a toroidal field that shifts into magnetic then into electric and Kinetic and these then can be used to move nature. My guess is through some unexplained enlightenment, lion turtles discovered that energy was all around them and within them. Everything was energy and that energy could be manipulated. They then used that energy manipulation to travel to the material world. When they first traveled to the physical world was the beginning of time. It is heavily implied that lion turtles are beyond time. So it makes sense that they were at the beginning. After they entered the physical world they most likely encountered the original benders, Bison, Dragon, Badger Mole and Moon and noticed how these beings manipulated the energy around them and were able to learn through observation the ability to bend what we know as elemental bending. Later they bestowed the ability to humans as informal protectorates of mankind. Also important to note that lion turtles existed before many spirits. I think the best way to think about spirits is sort of like Greek mythology gods. There are major spirits that personify physical phenomena like the moon and ocean spirits and minor spirits that personify smaller things like Hei Bai the forest spirit. All spirits energy bend in a different way than mortals in a way rhat mainly focuses more on energy change than manipulation which is why spirits can transform and poses people but can’t fire bend. This is also why lion turtles can bestow bending and remove it. This implies bending is not genetic and anyone can bend energy. The reason why most aren’t capable remains unknown and the writers sort of wrote themselves into a corner there. Maybe instead of physical strength u need some sort of spiritual capacity to bend the elements?

Its why water benders can learn how to bloodbend & heal - water has the most chi pathways in the body enabling various different forms. Air has been shown to have the least with only explaining its full unblocking can enable unassisted flight
