The fact that it didn't go through criminal court is no sleight on her. This kind of crime is very hard to prove because it's about consent. The DPP said they didn't go ahead with a prosecution because McGregor can afford good lawyers and it would be "he said, she said". Once they refused, the only thing she could do was pursue it in civil court, because she can't make the authorities prosecute. Look at the evidence and you'll see that the DPP should be under scrutiny here. She was covered in wounds after he assaulted her, as documented by the paramedics. That's not consensual.

The reason it's a Civil case and not a Criminal case was stated by the police and their investigators: they found no evidence a crime had taken place. The police believe it was consensual. Piece of trivia: J Paul Getty had an entire department dedicated to these sorts of cases. When you have obscene amounts of money, you either don't leave your house or you have a team of lawyers ready for the claims. Just the fact that the settlement was so low tells you everything you need about what the court felt. Sometimes it's just easier to pay and put it in the rearview. McGregor needs to carry consent contracts like so many millionaires do! And probably should get a vasectomy to prevent child support claims, of which at least one has been tried against McGregor, and failed, in the past. Money truly is a burden!
