I just want one Singleplayer game where you play as German soldier storywise. We heard/played Allies stories, i want to hear/play Axis stories

The main problem with a German-centred game is the devs have to choose whether to include the war crimes. If they don’t, it’s disrespectful to the victims to portray a German Unit that just ‘wasn’t involved in the war crimes’, as there were very few of these, and even just fighting for their side means the player has to be complicit in the crimes. If they do include the war crimes, suddenly you are directly encouraging the player to support these crimes, and it makes it impossible to feel sympathy for your comrades / your main character. You can make a whole other point about whether it’s right to want to win a battle as the Axis, as you’d be wanting to support an evil regime. Maybe a game where a soldier starts as brutalised but eventually becomes disillusioned would work, though this is probably too kind to German soldiers, who in general behaved awfully at every point in the war.

@@MrRassoudok‘Most German soldiers didn’t commit any war crimes’. Try reading a book on their psychology: Soldaten by Sönke Neitzel is a good start. It wasn’t just the SS and Einsatzgruppen committing these crimes: as early as Poland 1939 Luftwaffe pilots were making games out of machine gunning refugee lines. When the army advanced, it was Wehrmacht soldiers who executed any ‘Commissars’ they found, and more often than not any Jews they found, as long as the village was small enough. Stories of soldiers driving through cities like Odessa and simply grabbing women off the street and raping them inside their trucks and tanks are more than common. Most army brothels -which nearly every soldier visited - were often ‘staffed’ by young girls and slaves. This is to say nothing of Wehrmacht soldiers involved in the shooting of prisoners, helping in the massacres (such as at Babi Yar), and even those who did not participate would have seen this and realised what they were truly fighting for. War crimes and the Wehrmacht are inseparable; whilst not every German soldier was a criminal, he would have been surrounded by people who were, and so unless the game is purely about a soldier in a resistance movement then they would have to address the crimes somehow. The only other option is to do a non-narrative game, like most current ones. You can argue the lack of civilians in these games reduces the emotional impact of war and makes it seem more heroic (ie just warriors fighting), although including civilians isnt a great idea for many obvious reasons.

Still waiting for a gritty and realistic look at the perspective of other countries. French, Belgian, Soviet, Polish, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Brazilian, Greek, Romanian, Danish. ETC. These countries too have fascinating stories to tell, humanizing the war, showing it's realities, teaching you things you didn't know about it. It would be fascinating.
