Enfield No4 Aftermarket Magazines: Are They Worth It?

A quick(ish) overview and range test of a couple of the more common replacement magazines available for the Enfield No 4.

Appreciate this as I have a nice no4 though if I get an extra I think I’ll try for an original as they are still not to hard to find. It’s good to know someone’s trying to do it right.

Good to know, but makes sense. I ended up getting an original from Liberty Tree a while back to replace the one (at least for display purposes) on my ugly RTI No4.

Heck even for display purposes originals are best since the replacements don’t look 100% right.

First of all you should compare the feed lips to the original and then bend them to be similar. Second you should not push down on the front of the follower to make it jam, cartridges don't do that . On the Parker Hale and the Pro Mag I would bet that the front feed lips are horizontal and not bent the same as the original. You can form them to fit your rifle. And lastly if you already have a magazine for your rifle why do you need another. The British soldier only needed one. The magazine stays in the rifle and is loaded with the bolt open through the top with stripper clips or singly loaded.

the follower is always tilted until the last round is fed. If you wiggle it until it is straight it will of course jam.

I have seen the two piece magazines before. Parker-Hale did a lot of sporterizing of surplus Lee-Enfields so that might be where the mags came from. Not all Lee-Enfield magazines are interchangable between rifles. A magazine for a No. 4 does not fit a No. I properly and vice versa. I picked up an aftermarket magazine by Promark and it functions fine in my No. I. The No. 4 magazine sometimes fell out while hand loading.

Good video. I have noticed that Enfields are notoriously picky with magazines. Since they weren’t really designed to be swapped out, I suspect that each one is finessed for that particular rifle. I picked up a spare original British magazine from Liberty Tree Collectors just to have a backup. Even that one sometimes has feeding issues.

This is true, and the magazines/feed lips do seem a bit prone to wear/damage. Not that I necessarily have a strong opinion of what’s really the best bolt action rifle of WW2 but it’s hard to ignore this shortcoming when considering the question.

My enfield has a 5 round magazine. It does take away from the look but I have more clerance.

I bought a Pro-Mag at the first of the year. On its arrival I confirmed it was the correct one for my 4-2. It wouldn’t even fit in the mag well. I sent it back to Pro-Mag, and after SIX MONTHS I still have not received a replacement. Company is COMPLETE JUNK!

I have to say I'm glad they failed. I recently ponied up $80 for an original No. 4 mag and felt raped. haha! Had to have it though...
