Awesome show guys. Thanks Bairdo for taking the time to come on the show and for your excellent explanation of what is involved in your role and Michael Masai's decision. The first thing they need to do is cut the team principals contact with the race director, who needs that when you are trying to make split second decisions. While I appreciate the difficulty of Michael Massi's decision at that time, my feeling at the end of the race was that Mercedes were making decisions based on a set of know rules and those rules changed when Michael decided to wave the 5 cars between Lewis and Max by. Given that there was a championship on the line, the race should have been red flagged. Hamilton would have the opportunity to put fresh softs on and the race would have been restarted with both title contenders on the front row fighting it out, putting the onus back on the drivers (not the officials) and we would have had an equitable race to the end. Personally I did not care who won as both teams and drivers deserved to win the championship, just a shame it was decided in this manner. I have to make a final comment, Russell, wow your presentation and interview skills have become so polished! Well done to all involved in the production. Seasons greetings and best wishes for the New Year.

Gents thanks for a great episode to close out 2021. It was great hearing Craig Baird on the show. The intro alone did enough to boost his credibility and image but his explanation of doing the job was fantastic and I went away with only respect for this guy. Like 45 million other people I will make a remark about the Formula One finale. After a passing interest from 84 to 2000 I have hardly missed a race in the last 22 years. I agree with Craig Baird that Hamilton deserved to win this final race. However after a dominance in the first half of the season by RedBull was in part squandered by Verstappen including 19 points thrown away at Silverstone when he went for an apex at Copse that was clearly not going to be available# Mercedes Benz fought back impressively and entered that race tied on points. So that race WAS the title decider. That's the thing that made it such an event. It felt like "The rumble in the jungle", something massive, something you didn't need to be a seasoned F1 fan to get excited about. A Hamilton win would have sealed an amazing team fightback and his 8th record breaking championship. The way it was ended made it a farce. The decisions made might have made for a dramatic finish and might have made a good show but were not in keeping with the rules and totally unexpected. Hamilton out dragged Verstappen from the start despite being on one step harder tyres and out drove him and led every phase of the race on pace. Hamilton led by 11 sec with 6 laps to go, he had won that race and so the title. So now the ultimate prize the Formula One Drivers Championship has been terribly tarnished, devalued. If 2000 people in a team can "bust a gut" to win that title and it is denied them in such a way it becomes a hoax. Hamilton like a statesman congratulated Verstappen. I don't think that was false, what they were pissed about was the bullshit, whining and conniving and lobbying that Horner used to influence Massi. EG Copse (where Hamilton left space) was "a desperate move by a desperate driver" but Brazil T4 where Verstappen made Hamilton use a different post code to avoid contact was "letting them race". Hamilton was robbed and passionate fans have a very bad taste in their mouths. #Copse corner at Silverstone. I have raced there and been attacked up the inside. Its a VERY fast corner with a VERY late apex. If you squeeze someone to the wall on the approach they WILL run wide. Even so Ham left room, just not the whole track. So Max created the situation where Hamilton was never able to take the classic line and hit the apex, but guess what that is not a thing in the rules. If somebody is on the inside and entitled to racing room you need to leave quite a bit there. Max caused the contact by demonstrating his apparently genetic inability to share a corner and going for the apex as if he was on his own. Seriously if Max raced against himself he would never finish a race. If not for Max's "own goal" 54 g impact there would have been no penalty.
@markhowells133 жыл бұрын
I fundamentally disagree, Lewis wasn't substantially in front at any point, if he couldn't make the corner he should have hit the anchors and backed out. its not up to Max to make his life easier, its up to Lewis not to hit Max in that scenario
@davidporeilly13 жыл бұрын
@@markhowells13 He did make the corner. Any driver is not required to be in front to command racing room. By having significant overlap before the turn-in point Hamilton was entitled to racing room. This fact is the fundamental issue that makes the scenario very clear. From that point Hamilton is entitled to compete for the corner. He is not required to back out at all. So there were two cars in that corner and both entitled to be there. Verstappen went for too much apex wrongfully expecting Hamilton to back out (signature move by Verstappen). It didn't work out. Verstappen error. Apart from all that if we accept that Hamilton is entitled to compete for the corner what exactly was he supposed to do differently?

Masi's good mate defending what he did.... no mention of actually breaking their own rules , a decision that would never have happened at another race . At least admit that what he did was wrong.... for the motorsport and the rules they enforce. Mercedes made a decision based on the rules ... if they change the rules at their own discretion then what good is having rules laid out? Lewis dominated that race ... Max was in no- mans land all race ... and he started on faster tyres

Pretty disappointed there was no discussion on whether the allowing of select number of cars to unlap was within the sporting regulations or not. This was what's controversial about the race. Not the fact Hamilton was leading the whole race only to be overtaken by Verstappen on the last lap. Not interested in how Masi is a good bloke or who deserves the championship or making a good show- these should be totally irrelevant. Race control are there to apply the rules of the game objectively, not act as a movie director.

1:05:27, It's up to the commentators to constantly hunt down news, trivia, any information available, and update that information. The current mob too much time gibbering. It comes across to me, that their target audience has no interest in motor cars, much less motor racing. 32 episodes of 'Enforcer & The Dude', plus the Kelly Racing videos, I've learnt more about these cars than I have in 40 years of TV. Also , there's too many smiling faces. Some hatred would go a long way.

Cracking show to end the year with, always liked Bairdo and great to have that side of things on the show. I do slightly disagree about the Masi call only because there were others whose position became a non fight, Ricciardo in 12th on fresh tyres ended up with 11th and 10th running behind him after they were let through and if I recall a couple of others in a similar situation. They should have let all through when the call came that they weren't letting them through at all, and personally the radio chatter after that I think changed his mind(Alonso: haha typical and he should be in front of me! Max: hahaha of course, what a joke! ) I'm not a Hamilton fan or a Max fan and think it could have been handled better and who ever won the championship would deserve it, but at the end of the day the the best driver over the year won and the numbers say that also

Great show guys. I'm so glad that you had Craig on to explain just how difficult it is to adjudicate on the happening during a race. I for one thought Michael Masi made exactly the right call in the best interests of the final F1 race at Abu Dhabi given the extreme timeline pressure he was under. The poor guy was on a hiding to nothing whatever call he made but at the end of the day Mercedes chose not gamble and take on fresh tyres on more than one occasion when they could have and Red Bull did. Max was just as deserving of the championship when you take into account the whole season. What has transpired since is really poor form by Mercedes, Hamilton and Wolf. Merry Xmas to you all.
@kermit103 жыл бұрын
I've heard plenty of times on supercars abut track position, Lewis had track position if Lewis pitted then Max would have track position, The race director choose not to follow the rules and regs regards to the safety car, the race director has been on tv in 2020 explaining the rules and regs when a couple of drivers were complaining how long the safety car been out for and we all agree that the length of time a safety car is out for after they have cleared an incident is a bit ridiculous at times when we all want to watch racing. The race director stated that all lap cars needed to unlap and then the safety car comes in after the next lap when that happens, the race director choose not to follow the rules & regs this time to create a show so basically fixing the race. Would you be saying the same if the stewards in a supercars championship deciding race choose not to follow the rules & regs that they have followed at previous race weekends.

Late to the party on this one. Bairdo's great, lot of respect for the guy but : Masi's stewardship of F1 has been bad, with driving standards dropping lower and lower each season he was in charge. Some of the moves they've let people get away with, like Verstappen in Jeddah T1 just sending it and forcing others well off circuit and then him essentially asking RBR what kind of penalty they would prefer for it was ridiculous and coupled with him being berated into making a rash decision at Abu Dhabi again by RBR only stoked the already burning fire. He was making decisions on the fly and not referring to the rulebook at all times. If a race director refers to the rulebook and doesn't abuse his discretionary powers nobody can complain about it. The problem comes with a grey area's that aren't in or excluded in the rules that interfere with the integrity of the sport. Lets face it, the integrity of F1 was compromised most significantly in both Jeddah and Abu Dhabi and that's the reason why Masi got the can in the end.
@WilliamButtel3 жыл бұрын
For me with F1 If they want an even fair fight, you call a red flag and have everyone stop with soft tyres The problem is the spectacle at the end was fabricated, for tv and think about hamilton winning and having the momentum the last 4 - 5 races and he absolutely destroyed them that race until then The other issue is why can Massi interpret the rules according to him, this isn't a massi hate post its just the truth of whats happening, racing rules vs racing interpretation makes no sense Also why give 5 second penalties for hard racing but when people drive each other off the road aka vestappen its "hard racing" 1. reward hard racing but when its over the line come down hard 2. stop the direct line from f1 teams to stewards 3. stop having backdoor agreements e.g ferrari engine 2018
@jjg10003 жыл бұрын
Simple mate ... they didn't want lewis and Mercedes to win again. Perhaps it's bad for the sport... but this is sport and if one team is better than the other then that's just what it is. They even tried to cap spending to bring the teams closer but merc still do an amazing job. As soon as liberty media took over I feared this would happen, and neflix getting involved. It's bad for the sport in my opinion and I expect masi had pressure from higher ups somewhere to influence the results the way he did

@ MT-Guitars yes merc could have made a pit stop under the safety car but they would have lost track position. Anyway the argument is that massi broke the fia rules, if he just followed the rules and max one no one would be arguing. That’s the point I’m trying to make mate, you can’t just change the rules to make the race more interesting
@bozspeed10carsbikesmotorcy923 жыл бұрын
@Harteck44 With what exactly do you disagree? The sporting Reg’s for yellows and restarts is clear and the FIA have admitted they weren’t followed. They have justified their position by saying article 15.3 grants the authority to the race director to override the sporting regulations. If you read all of article 15, it pertains to officials and their pecking order. 15.3 states the the race director can overrule the clerk of the course, not overrule the sporting regulations. If he can overrule the sporting Reg’s, then what’s the point in having any rules? This is supposed to be the pinnacle of Motorsport, not WWE pro fake wrestling. My point has nothing to do with Lewis or Max, it has to do with the regulation and administration of the sport. If Michael Masi can make up rules on the fly they may as well throw out the rule book and call it Death Race 2022.
