14:16 this really hit home🥲 I got into kpop around 10 years ago when I was a super young impressionable middle schooler. Also being from the US, it sucks that during that time there wasn’t a lot of Asian representation in the media. In addition, I didn’t really have a big asian community aside from my family. I was teased a lot for being Asian and having the traditional Asian eyes. Got called ling ling and other derogatory terms a few times and was asked if I ate dogs. So yeah… during that time there’s no surprise that I held some hatred towards my features and culture just because no one ever seemed to understand it or outright made fun of it. Kpop was literally like opening my eyes to a whole new world. Even if I’m not Korean, I was still inspired by all the idols I saw. They were pretty, handsome, talented, and successful individuals that shared some of the features that I was made fun of. They were cool and fashionable instead of the boring, nerdy asian the media used to stereotype back then. I remember seeing SNSD’s IGAB for the first time and just loving their clothes, makeup, hair and music video set. I remember seeing Tiffany’s eyesmile and I was just floored. Cause she looked SO pretty and adorable with her beautiful eyes, which made me realize my eyes were also pretty and adorable when I smiled! I honestly don’t know if I’d have openly accepted and loved my culture and my features at that age if not for kpop. And of course, that’s not to say I wasn’t also heavily influenced by the Korean beauty standards. Like being very pale and thin with a thigh gap, and having a very specific face shape. I definitely experienced some insecurities in that sense, but at least I wasn’t affected as heavily by the western, eurocentric beauty standards that I looked even less like. This was super long but sometimes it’s nice to look back at that time and appreciate all that kpop had done for me.

But kpop isn't really true representation of asian americans/asian diaspora. Its just the popularization and normalization of asian/korean media being consumed in the west. Koreans are obviously going to be the main "represented" group in korean media cuz duh korean media will portray koreans ofc. Maybe to some it gives hope and happiness that their ethnic group/race is shown on screen a bit more in the west like seeing bts in the malls or nyc time square boards, but its not a accurate portrayal of asian diaspora representation. We're still undercut in the west despite the popularity of kpop/easian media. Theres plenty of talented asian americans born in america (or whatever country) who dont get enough opportunities or attention they deserve and we still have the problem where asian actors get constantly recycled in Hollywood, and we dont have enough stories about us at all and especially ones that arent stereotyping us heavily or arent a part of some quaigon asian festish

I very vaguely remember someone saying that the Plus Girl Group audition was just a PR stunt to draw attention to the group and that BigHit had already chosen the members for the upcoming group from their existing trainees before the auditions. I doubt that's true, but I think about it sometimes because I see all these talented girls auditioning and they didn't get in.
