Setting that aside, Here I present you guys Akai Haato doing English test. I have to admit she has much better English pronunciation than i do, although her grammar might be a bit weaker. But who cares about grammar, right?

Well my English lecturer once said that native speaker learned their language mostly based on what they heard, therefore their language might not always as correct as how it should be. Well that makes total sense since I can relate with my own language situation. Then he continued his story about a transfer student from America who got score 4 of 10 in English exam while the entire class were 8 above. That's why never afraid to speak English wrongly because the native speakers don't always speak correctly. You can always improve from your mistakes, and this is exactly what I see from Haato.

Usually native speakers are even worse. For example it's not often for non native to mix between "there" and "their" or " your" and " you're" because non natives learned them from lessons and not their daily lives like the natives who learned it from their daily lives.

I just hope she keeps trying and doesn't give up. IMO she's crossed the hardest barrier which is being able to string thoughts together in English which is absolutely huge. Probably the biggest barrier to learning a new language. You can tell in her English streams with the speed she makes sentences she isn't thinking in Japanese then converting it to English then saying it. She is capable of conversational English but needs to work on pronunciation and obviously vocabulary as she has admitted herself several times. It's easy to get discouraged (especially if people on the internet are being dicks about it) but she should be proud of how far she's come. As someone who has tried 3 times to learn German I know how goddamn difficult it is to learn languages. IMO she's made it over the worst barrier but now has the grueling process of pronunciation and vocabulary training. She will also end up with an Australian accent lol.

Which do you think is tougher to pick up, Vocabulary or Grammar? When I was young I had a hard time with Vocabulary, but in the present I feel that mastering Grammar is somehow tougher than improving Vocabulary.

@@forcexjr1566 I think it's hard to answer. In *general* I think vocabulary takes the longest time. You will get decent to even good grammar faster than you're going to get good vocabulary unless you're just really good at memorizing words. And when you're talking to someone it's usually going to be your lack of knowing a word that slows down your conversation rather than a slight error in grammar. But then absolutely *mastering* all the nuances of grammar, especially with something like English that likes to play loose with the rules, will take ages. Some might never really get there - and that's fine. That said you also have to consider the native language of the learner as well. Japanese grammatical structure is almost backwards to English so it was probably a really difficult thing for Haato to learn.

That English test is actually decently hard (well yeah it's a Cambridge test ofc lol). Especially the first set of questions, which you'll have trouble with if you don't regularly have conversations with native English speakers lol. Even that last question was tricking some people in the English chat ("plenty" is the correct answer, not "enough"). All the options mean the same thing, but each one requires slightly different syntax in order to be used correctly. That's a nightmare for non-native speakers lol

I tried to do the same test just now (english is not my first language) and I did pretty well, 22 out of 25. Among the questions I failed, there's one I don't understand why which was "Would you like some ice in your drink or not?" which for me is a yes-no question so I answered with the single one which had a "yes" in it and the right answer was: "I don't mind". That's not exactly an answer to the question IMO. If someone told me that, I would repeat the question again until I get a clear "YES" or "NO".

English is one of the easiest languages to learn. Compared to other languages of course. Learning other languages is not an easy task

@@user-im9fq6xc5x I've heard this echoed by other people too. English does have a lot of weirdness to it but the lack of gendered nouns makes it easy compared to other Latin languages. The conjugation rules are also simpler compared to, say, French but the downside is there's an ass load of special cases. The one thing English has going for it is English speakers are used to people speaking it differently. Be it different accents, high exposure to new immigrants, etc. This gives us a really wide band of understanding pronunciations outside our local dialect. It's amazing the number of taxis I've been in where the cabby could barely speak English but we still managed to converse. It's an every day experience here. Conversely when I was in Germany if I said "Bahnhaf" instead of "Bahnhof" people would have no clue what I was saying.

On at least two of those questions my first thought was "is it supposed to have multiple correct answers?" because I absorbed the meaning of the sentence and not the actual structure of it. Then it hits a second later that, no, "rather to" is definitely not valid. "To" in that sentence is the defining word that invalidates the other options. Very tricky.

That test pissed me off because it tries to dismiss differentdialects as wrong speech for uneducated people, and claims only their version of english is right Example, in southern US dialects and Ebonics they use double negatives a lot, to reinforce intensity in a sentence. Double negatives are wrong according to mainstream US english grammar, are those people wrong for speaking their own dialect of english?

Haato should definitely read Ernest Hemingway's works (like "The Old Man and the Sea"). Hemingway's simplistic sentence structure and his clear, straightforward writing style is definitely something that proves useful for people who are learning English. You know some of the phrases that the test uses are pretty confusing because they're either words that people don't use that often or there are multiple ways to respond to them. So I can see how a non native speaker like Haato is confused. Hell I am even confused by the some of choices they put on it.

Actually, they are used extremely often. So often, in fact, that I don't think people think about them when they use it. It's also Cambridge so it's distinctively British, which also adhere to a set of convention that the more malleable American and International English don't often have. I was educated under the English system and watch English televisions so many of the questions seem a little obvious. Of course, they threw in a few bones there with some cases where it could have been either one of the answer and require a bit of pondering to see why the right choice makes sense.

She is miles ahead of the other Hololive in her english, apart from Coco. This is a pretty challenging english test. The first questions are highly specific. You need to 100% understand what is being said, otherwise your answer will be wrong. There is no room to guess. The later questions are even tougher because its getting into the nitty gritty of grammar. You have four words that basically mean the same thing but only one of them fits grammatically. Thats brutal.

I respect her confidence, learning to speak another language does require it. I can see how the Cambridge test could be *very* difficult for a non native speaker! Take this question: 4:35 "I would ...... to stay at home and relax for a change" "Prefer" is the most native sounding answer because "prefer" implies you enjoy it more than the other option, which the question implies is to go out rather than staying in. "Enjoy" is also completely acceptable, although I think it would sound more native prefixed by "I'd" rather than "I would". "Better" is incorrect unless you change "I would" to "I think it would be" "Rather" would be completely fine to use IF you got rid of the "to" and made it "I would rather stay". This type of question can easily trip people up!

Enjoy does not sound correct, whether you use "I'd" or not. Although the sentence is perfectly understandable for an English speaker, "enjoy" is not used with the infinitive ("to stay").
