I like the long hair too. However, I do have some complaints about this wig. It's too thick at the sides, i.e. too much hair there. The hair hangs heavily in his face, hiding the contours and casting shadows on his face. Chen Kun wore long wigs in other movies and dramas. In Painted Skin, The Flying Swords and others, his long hair wigs are lighter on the sides. It looks better on him

I wonder how different their destiny will be if they get married as planned. Feng’s mother and brother are somehow always making wrong decisions and get the family in trouble. As a in law, Ning Yi, may definitely be outcast for the throne. They might have the chance to live a quiet and peaceful life together.

Zhiwei would have had to marry under her cousin's name and keep that identity, possibly for life. So, no outcasting for Ning Yi. But that's why this marriage with the exchanged bride is an absurd idea in the script. That wouldn't have been possible.

Is a shame her mother forced her to say she’d never marry the prince. I’ve only just started watching this series but I’ve read it has a sad ending. I’m not one for sad endings, The storyline quite interesting so far but I’d better not get to hooked, I’d hate to be disappointed in the end.

@@sherryannefelix3707 Interesting so many of us feel the same way - a fierce visceral outrage against the cruel fate the script condemns the hero and heroine to. It's never happened to me before. Theater, opera and movies are full of lovers ending sadly. I could always accept it. Not here. I wonder why that is.

The way too often used trope about a little child being blamed for what happens to adults is so tiring. That Gu general was surrounded and stood no chance. Whether Ning Yi was there or not changed absolutely nothing - he was doomed anyway. Ning Yi cannot be blamed for his death. Besides, being a child, what was Ning Yi doing on the battlefield anyway? He even wanted to take charge of the baby which is weird. As to what happened to the baby is still unclear. The mother really comes across as rather stupid.

The forced oath is not a well-constructed motivation. Firstly, one wonders why Madame Feng only thinks of this now after she pleaded for the marriage two days earlier. Second, since she is not the real mother, the oath/curse can only be an empty threat to intimidate Zhiwei. Third, Buddhism does not make rebirth dependent on other people's behavior. Fourth, and this is the main thing, it makes FZW‘s charakter weak. Why does this highly gifted, resourceful and rebellious young woman simply allow herself to be coerced? In the novel, she refuses NY’s proposal because she doesn't want to lead a life locked up in a harem, or worse, end up on the scaffold. That's a coherent motivation. It would also better explain why NY (in drama) is so cautious in his efforts to get her. Proposing in E3, taking her rejection in stride he apparently forgot for the next 30 episodes what he actually wants from this woman... One more thing: it would make sense if Mingying ordered her foster daughter not to marry ANY member of the Ning family, not just Ning Yi. As the last princess of Dacheng, she is supposed to be a pawn for Zong Chen's and Bloody Pagoda's revisionist desires. But she has nothing to do with Gu Heng, she didn't even know him - so that particular point can't stand between her and NY. The unfathomable will of the scriptwriters.... To make sense of it, then maybe this way: Mingying subliminally senses the delicate threads spinning between Zhiwei and Prince Chu, and she fears losing control. Hence that toxic vow.

Other than the physically impossible plot holes you are probably talking about, the forced oath is a perfectly sensible motivation in ancient Chinese culture. Since she brought up zhiwei, she is practically her mother, and since she was forced to say her full name the oath will find the right soul no matter what. In buddhism, due to cause and effect, vows can definitely alter your afterlife and the Chinese official term is not just die a terrible death but have your soul split into nothingness, which sometimes possible. Either way, even if these repercussions did not happen the souls of her father and step mother would bring terrible fortune to the daughter’s life for not keeping her word. Anyways, promises carry karma, that’s why in Chinese dramas sometimes people say I’ll repay this favor by slaving away as a horse in the next life and that is actually what happens (in Buddhist theory).

@@yayalu8650 Thank you for your explanation! Ok, so that's why Zhiwei doesn't change her attitude even after finding out her identity. (Zhiwei in the novel also makes an oath to her "mother" - to restore Dacheng. Ning Yi enables her to fulfill it. ) I understand that (in Buddhist theory) your own actions determine your karma/afterlife. Also committing yourself to live your next life as a dog or something... ok. But it doesn't make sense to me that you can deliberately determine the afterlife of another person. Is that so? BTW the script drops the oath as a motif right after the peripeteia in Ep51, replacing it with new obstacles. Ning Yi declares he will not give up, and later he wants her to be his empress.

@@stellasonabilis9884 what the person above you said is indeed true for Buddhism as it was practiced in the past. The aspect of your parents controlling parts of your life would be valid if they had a good reason to enforce the vow on you (however whether Zhiwei's mom's vow is "good" or not is something I will get into in a bit). This was prescribed in what was known as Sigalovada Sutta, which explains all the different ways people were expected to live to have the greatest harmony with their community members. Things like arranging good marriages for their kids and passing inheritance fell into the types of responsibilities parents had. This Sutta is not practiced literally in modern times however, as people realized that many of the expectations are not realistic. Buddhism does not accept vows based on petty drama or selfish reasons. Oaths/promises/vows must be based on not wanting to hurt others, wanting to help others, and wanting to bring the greatest benefit to beings that one can. Furthermore if someone takes an oath and later realizes it is a bad oath (as in it is not helpful or does not bring more peace and good things for the world), you are allowed to reconsider or not follow the oath. This is the teaching of Shantideva. Dhamma, the core teachings that uphold Buddhism and describe rules for self-governing, actually get priority before parental rights if the two are clashing. For example, a big pillar of Dhamma is forgiveness. So if a parent insists on hating someone and try to teach their children to do the same, the children's Dhamma would trump the wants/teachings of their parents. Now in the case of Zhiwei's mom, in modern times we would consider her forced vow was based on hatred (dvesha), which makes it a poison vow. Poison vows in Buddhism automatically create negative karma, so she set herself up for failure by pursuing it. However, it can also be argued that in older times her vow may be valid because at the time of the vow she had her best interests in heart for both Zhiwei and the remnants of the Dacheng people, especially considering how the Ning empire demolished her people and continued to use them as collateral. I doubt filmmakers think this deeply about these kinds of Buddhist teachings though, they just assume we the viewers at home will go with the flow. 🤣 Just keep in mind that at the end of the day, dramas are dramas and will often exaggerate things. For example, this is why you often see villain characters making stupid or dangerous oaths in these imperial dramas, it's because it's easy to use religion to get rid of them. In reality their evil vows would not have been valid to start with, and this is true for ancient times as well. 😅 Filmmakers clean up these plotlines neatly by killing off those characters, showing they were punished for being dishonest and malicious. Irl many imperial people got away with all kinds of bad things.

@@samwisegamgee1243 Very good and informative read, thank you very much! The details about Buddhist teachings are really interesting. The hero and heroine seem like hybrid beings to me. To some extent they think and feel like modern people, and partly they are "ancient". It's a bit confusing because I often don't know what rules the characters and plot are following at a given moment. As you said, it can be interpreted both ways. The literary source is, from what I know of it, much more fantasy-heavy. As a kind of glue, this holds the whole thing together. Much of it could hardly be translated into visual language, e.g. the constant masking of the protagonists. So of course the drama does well to drop most of the fantasy elements. The main characters gain psychological depth as a result. From the mysterious eccentric of the novel, Ning Yi becomes the complex character we know. The Amazon-like Feng Zhiwei becomes a young woman with some tomboy features, in between talent, ambition and naivety. But maybe they should have left her the determination and reasoning with which the novel’s Zhiwei refuses to marry. No need for a shaky external motivation. It even damages the character, because Zhiwei's active effort to "conquer" NY (during Minhai mission) is actually ruthless given the circumstances. Just like the cruel brevity with which she dumps him shortly afterwards. You say stupid oaths and the like are often used to clean up the plotline of villains. But using them to lead the main heroes to their doom, plus negating them when becoming obstructive, seems very arbitrary.

Why have the English subtitles been changed? I can see know reason for these changes! Eg,, calling Zhiwei a ‘Civit cat’ ivits are not cats and they come from Africa. Changing characters titles from the original, as inHeadmaster Xin to Minister, etc. Also the addition of American slang terms, Zhiwei calling her brother ‘buddy’ in a scene. It’s usual for men to call another man ‘buddy’. American slang is not appropriate for a series that is set in ancient China. I’ve come to the conclusion that AI is being used to generate English subtitles and American gangster movies are being used as a training tool. Spoils the enjoyment of a wonderful series.
