Honestly couldn’t tell you. Possibly to help market the game in western regions, where Sonic is popular and Puyo Puyo isn’t. It also helps that a few of the staff behind the Puyo games have worked on the Sonic series before. Also, there’s been a skin for the Puyos that makes them look like the Sonic cast ever since “Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary”, and the Sonic series has had collabs with the mobile game “Puyo Puyo!! Quest”, so it isn’t too unbelievable.
