The tank mikado ruuules! Yes, it has less fuel than everything else, but that also makes it the steamer with the highest power to weight ratio by far. It handles like a go-kart. And it refills in a blink. I use it for the log run up to Connelly and to switch the sawmill, and there's no more fun to be had in this game than to kick and dutch drop log flats with the tiny mike.

Yes, I use the K-28 for logging operations at Whittier too! I use it to augment the G-16 and T-17 that I have stationed at Whittier until I get the SW-1, then I send the two of them to work at Alarka.

Fun fact about shays and power reverser, Mower Lumber equipped No.5 with one. She didn't need one per the guidelines but it evidently was misunderstood by mower. That power reverser actually contributed to an accident in 1942 which resulted in a bent frame for her. Of course she would survive and be repaired, and the reverser was removed in the70s

Few things to help with operational efficiency, 50% throttle is enough to run at 40-50 mph with 40-30% reverser in either direction, and it burns 1/4 the amount of coal but double the water. Also, coasting is a thing, or at the least running at 20-30% throttle will maintain speed most of the time. Keeping everything oiled above 90% lets everything free role over under 90% making things act like it has some breaks applied. And 20% breaking on the whole train is more than enough to stop (if you are paying attention to what you are doing, and not running for the memes). With these things in mind, I have gone from refueling my engines twice a day, to if I really need to squeeze it out once every two days. Only having to stop for water (which is free and unlimited) saves me time in not having to switch extra coal cars, and money which is an extra $600+ I don't have to spend on the coal. And running recklessly safe keeps me from having to use up all of my repair parts. Also, just on a time-based thing, skipping time can lead to a lot of lost money. I keep my passenger train running all day (even into the night until 10-11 which is when I store it at Bryson for overnight touch up repairs), and I don't skip ahead for it or the logs because it doesn't waste the time I could have used switching the logs out when I skipped ahead for one log to unload. I understand playing solo is very different from play with a few dozen people, but it's wild to me that a solo gamer running with 3 engines was making more money per day than a railroad with 10 engines all on the move at the same time that was twice the size with double the industry at higher tiers. All that being said, progression update time. I have delivered the Alarka wye cars to get it built, have upgraded Bryson, Ela, and Whitter to tier 5 (except Whitter sawmill, which is now Tier 4), and have set Robinson and all of Silva to tier 3. Debt still stands a $30,000, with operations still sitting at 100% safety and reputation at 110%.

We're going up this hill with 2000 tons, and 3 engines maxed out, going a speedy 10mph burning through a quarter of a tender of coal each in 3 miles! Fun times! Going that far is a bit much for single player though...

@@ryano.5149 Working my way there slowly, I had challenged myself to catch up to Hyce and keep a perfect safety record doing so, currently building the Alarka wye, and just started the Silva and Robinson coal industries at tier 3. Haven't rolled the day over yet to see how I'm going to deal with that, but currently I am working with the two starter engines (#1 and #2), I had bought a P-48 Pacific debt free around day 15, and I went into $30,000 worth of debt to buy a Berkshire because the Pacific was really starting to struggle around the 2,300 ton mark going to Silva interchange. I'm not opposed to doubling hills if I have to, and I often gravity run as much as I can for as long as I can. Might have to wait a few days' worth of income to get back to debt free and build up enough money to buy a few more engines to tackle the steeper grades. Who knows what the future will hold, but I do know that I am done with the first interchange by 11 currently then have nothing to do but swap logs once every few hours and run passengers all day. Today was the first time I had attempted a mid-day interchange, and it went pretty quickly. Day 23 will be interesting either way.

@@ryano.5149 If you really want to talk efficiency, I've ran the 2-6-0 starter #2 from Whitter to Bryson and back with two passenger coaches, without burning a gram of coal or even using a thimble of water. When I talk about efficiency, I'm talking about running at 100% throttle downhill, I'm talking about leaving things in the way. I'm talking running poorly just for git's and shiggles. My efficiency is burning .02 tons of coal in a 4-6-2 P43 Pacific pulling 3-84 passenger cars, 1-50passenger car, and 1-25 passenger obs car from Byson to Ela by running 50% throttle and 30% forward reverser. When I have burned more than 2 tons of coal just getting over the hump at Gov Island while running 100% throttle and 40% reverser. I'm not running 60+ mph then dumping all of the air to get around a turn and hope I don't derail, then have to wait while my air recharges and I have to fight against it the whole time. No, I run my 50-30 setup and get 30-40 mph on most of the line and often have the throttle off completely and just set 10%-20% on the train breaks to keep my speed happy. And I keep that speed to whole way across the map. I might burn 1.5 tons of coal with my Berk on my current track layout taking cars from Alarka station all the way to Silva interchange. And most of that is the very slight grade leading up to the tunnel at Cowee. My plan for Red Marble is simple Throw way too much train at it so that each engine doesn't have to work as hard, thus burning much less coal. I'll deal with it when I get there. For right now I'm just starting day 19 and am having to deal with the 56 cars that just got dropped in my lap.

Have we actually _had_ a brake 101 video yet? I'm still kinda intrigued by the differences between straight air and self lapping, since as a (out of practice, because work, sad noises) museum streetcar motorman the only air setup I get to play with is straight air unless I go talk to the railway guys next door and they decide to let me have a play. Which has only happened once, on a 1923 boxcab electric... I got a massive kick out of that. Yeeaaaaaaaaaaaah. And the MSTS shoutout reminds me that not only A.) we have the CDs for that somewhere at home but B.) I need to get around to purchasing the MicroAce N-scale KiHa 31 DMUs for all the memories of playing that game. Not that I appreciated the Hisatsu Line scenarios at the time, but it's got a whole lot more significance since I've been to Japan a few times, taken an interest in Japanese N scale, _and_ gotten a model of the steam-hauled tourist train that used to run over that line. For context, the Hisatsu Line got ES&D'd out of service in the 2020 Kyushu flooding, but local support means it'll come back... one day.

I got the game, ended up goin in day 1 no experience friend who has it was like hey heres a heavy train i got a quad header to solo manage first day on the job I was like well were really channeling ES&DT lol. Straight up 2x 2-8-0 2x 4-6-0. Edit someone left a pacific on the track, so i picked up a pacific at the front. So its now 5. its so crazy that I wish it was on the ES&DT server tbh lol. 30 cars 3500 tons which is apparently 7,000,000 pounds... which is a lot.
