Wise decision. While they have your block at the machine shop, have them measure all your bores and pistons. When you have cylinder ridges like you reamed away, that’s a warning sign of excess cylinder wear. Rehoning your cylinders will not fix the wear problem. You may need to bore the cylinders to the next size up, typically .015” over. Yep, that means you’ll need new .015” over pistons as well. If your bores pass the machine shops measuring for your standard bore, swallow your pride a little more and have them hone your cylinders properly. You’ll see the difference when you get it back. When you do your final block cleaning with your bottle brushes, use HOT soapy water. Hot tanking can leave a residue behind. Blast out every hole and galley there is. Good job so far. I like that you’re realizing the limitations of our home shops and you’re not afraid to let the machine shop do the important stuff with all their thousands of dollars of specialized machines. They do that stuff everyday.

Lots of good advice here and right on point! Just got a call from machine shop. Cylinders are tapered a bit. Ugh. Bore job coming...
@herbiesnerd5 жыл бұрын
That would make a great video if you can capture that at the machine shop!
@gordongman34235 жыл бұрын
I suggested he mic the bores. You think he would need .015 over pistons, that is only .0075 per side. Maybe only .015 over rings.

.015, .020, .030 & .040 over are the most common over bore sizes. You always want to bore it over the least amount necessary to make a clean and symmetrical over bore. .015” may not be enough. He may need .020” or .030” to do it right. It costs the same no matter what oversize is required.

Machinist recommended 0.030 👍

Thanks for the shout-out to those of us that live in Kansas City.Will a machine shop do all the details in addition to honing and decking on my wrangler 4.0 engine? Plugs, seals, bearings, rods, shafts and pistons?
@JeepSolid5 жыл бұрын
Hey, no problem! Yeah, machine shop can do it all. But it gets expensive quick.

A 2500psi - 3000psi pressure washer. They are even good for washing houses, windows, engine bays, car wash. Mine paid for it's self in the first year. Seven cars in the family, one motorcycle, my house, you name it they are worth the money.

I love watching you do this rebuild. One question, how do you stay so clean working around all this grease and oil?
@JeepSolid5 жыл бұрын
Oh, I don't actually do the work. Just a face on the camera :). Haha!! JK. I guess I just use gloves during the really dirty parts, and I have some good hand cleaner. Cuts the grease well.

Are there certain 4.0 that a better than others ? I know the older ones were high mileage engines. I hear the newer ones after 1998 are not worth rebuilding. I have a 2002 with 167000 and looking to rebuild. Any thoughts or info are appreciated

I haven't heard that 98 and newer aren't worth rebuilding...

What does 4.0 Liter mean in regards to an engine?
@JeepSolid4 жыл бұрын
It’s the capacity/volume of all 6 cylinders combined.

Frank Comment Warning: What was Jason's contribution to this video? He's too fixated on the camera and literally trying to steal the show. I actually stopped watching your earlier live feeds because of him. On the plus side, you are awesome . Your editing is great and your hilarious. Most importantly you talk to the camera as if we're actually there with you. I know this is an old series, but now I can see why your channel has taken off as well as it has.

YA, when you said you were going to clean it yourself I thought, NOT A GOOD IDEA. If you are rebuilding it why take a chance that you missed something & HEY IT'S ONLY MONEY, ALSO PEACE OF MIND.

imo get the major crud out and off of anywhere critical and start assembling.. no need to fret over dirt that wasnt hurting anything before, the engine can still brake catastrophically even if done perfectly id rather do a 3/4 ass job and be happy with how long it lasts then overspend and be heart broken if it only lasts another 200k
@JeepSolid5 жыл бұрын
As I have it apart, it's a good opportunity to clean it up. But yeah, anxious to get it running.
