Can you explain me please the crankcase separate process, which thru-stuts in which direction and how is the special nut and plate looking!?

Man you really need to have a good eye on this,,, and know there are a tone of parts I'd never remember videos are such a life saver

Yes. Very true. Pictures and videos are both great!

Looking at the position of the pistons on the crankshaft, it looks like the piston and connecting rods are connected to separate journals. If this is the case, would the O-320 be considered a boxer engine?

Yes that is correct.

I’m about 4 weeks away from building this engine back up. It will be installed on the Clipper in late May.

One the prop flange, those inserts??? Are threaded? No AN bolts seem to have a thread depth long enough to come flush much less give the two to three threads past you would like to see. Are the propeller bolts required to show threads past the flange threads? Where can I find the manual references to this? What were you taught?
@Blaircraft.Engines3 жыл бұрын
Yes, threaded inserts/bushings are on the crankshaft flange. You are correct, you should always have close to two bolt threads pass the nut/threaded portion (same case here). I just purchased bolts for my McCauley propeller, the P/N is actually the manufacture's P/N. Prop bolts are very specific and often cost $ a bit more too!

Also, I use the manufactures drawing for installation details and requirements.

@@Blaircraft.Engines Am I correct, the AN standard threads are shorter in thread count than propeller bolt thread count you just recently purchased? If the inserts on the prop flange has a shoulder machined into that insert, then the propeller bolts could bottom out before reaching the required two thread protrusion and at the same time give a false torque reading. The prop could actually be loose with the bolt grip being too long for the width of the propeller thickness. This could be a major issue when, for example, a metal propeller is exchanged for a wooden one. The wooden one has plate of a certain thickness and requires torquing to crush slightly the wood. The aircraft is an experimental pusher configuration. This situation would be rare, if any, with standard certified aircraft, but best practices would be expected in any case. Thank you for replying. This has been a head scratcher and the lack of data. The prop installation instructions are missing. The propeller company has been non responsive.

What are the limits on a lycoming crank?
@Blaircraft.Engines3 жыл бұрын
The limit is .010” under for this crank. I’m considering sending it out. It might be within .010” but it’s going to be close.

Hey awesome videos! Did you end up trying to turn your core in for value? We want to tear apart our engine way over TBO to see how it was doing, but apparently Lycoming doesn’t give you any cash back if you split the case. Any input?
@Blaircraft.Engines3 жыл бұрын
I am going to overhaul mine myself. I just recently received my crankshaft back and it's yellow tagged and ready. I'll be shipping my case out soon for cleaning and inspection.

some of The cam followers Look pretty torn up! This is the standard engine for the Piper Tri-Pacer. The tappets get rough in those engines when run past TBO limits. Some of the music ugh kinda doesn't fit your video. Otherwise very good.
@Blaircraft.Engines3 жыл бұрын
Yeah kinda rough looking for sure...This was just slight over 50% of the TBO too. And Thanks for your feedback. Appreciate it!

That whiney music can give you a headache. Trying to watch this with the sound off.

Yeah, I’ve chosen better… 😂 Apparently I thought it was ok 3 years ago starting out! At least I turned the gain down when I did the voice over. I still think the ending is better. 😁
