Days 3 through 5 sailing the Caribbean brought us more trauma every day, nearly 24/7. While sailing into Hogsty Reef, our engine failed us yet again. Oil continued to gush. Everything that mattered crashed in the most critical moments.
If we weren't living it, we wouldn't believe it either.

You made night time entrances. No not safe, you are always safer to remain at sea until you can make a visual entrance. Boats are sunk normally by rocks not waves.

Hoses are popping off the engine because they’re held on with screw clamps. Constant tension spring clamps or crimp clamps are the way to go for crucial cooling applications.

Spring clamps are not allowed. Crimp clamps not a good idea because hoses need to be removed to service things.
@specialydobon
@specialydobon Жыл бұрын
@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 didn’t know that about spring clamps in relation to marine engines, very good information to know. I haven’t worked on many boat engines (at least not full size engines that are comparable to automotive engines, I’ve mainly worked on outboard motors) and made my comment based on experience with high performance automotive engines where I’d get torn a new asshole if I used off the shelf Home Depot/AutoZone cheap Chinese screw style clamps on any of the cooling systems. I don’t even use them on my indoor RDWC systems because I’ve had them blow off with barely any pressure. If I had my way everything would be ridiculously large overspec’d quick disconnects for ease of service but as most of us have learned we can’t live in fantasy land and I don’t really see that ever being the norm 🤪 hope the crew is doing well, subscribed and looking forward to updates!

@@LyfeUntethered and what's wrong with that? It's basic seamanship to stay out at sea until dawn. It's just a few hours. Uncomfortable is not dangerous. Very poor decision making. What you did was dangerous and foolhardy. I hope you learn from it and refrain from doing it again.

It was stuck in that Marina for 10 months so it was rough for the owner to oversee what the marina was doing. The marina did not take good care of it while it was there.

@@LyfeUntethered they didn't go to sea in it. It was surely in your interest to check basics. I have spent my life delivering yachts. Often I fly in and have only a few days to prepare before going to sea. I have never had so much unserviceable stuff as you. Poor decision. Also entering at night in a strange place in coral: poor decision. Maybe it's time to reflect on what you have done and what is the best way to proceed. If you keep on going the way you have, then it's only a matter of time before something unfortunate happens.

I blame the boatyard for the motor. If they were paid to service the motor. However, I have to agree with deerfootnz, for going to sea on a yacht that is not up for transit and entering an anchorage at night with coral and reefs. That’s how you sink your yacht. Once you get to a marine store pick up 4 electric bilge pumps and 2 manual. You will have a spare for each one. Get the yacht on the hard and change those through holes changed with quality values. So your boat won’t sink on its own. Hope you guys won’t go down with the yacht.

@@joedirt7553 Hey Joe! When we got to the Marina in the DR, the boat was supposed to be fixed and ready to sail. It was not. So between us we spent a week repairing the boat to help out the owner and get it out of there. We wrenched and tested all day every day. The captain is an adept mechanic and has driven everything from boats in the Bering Sea during crab season to a cruise ship. We got the boat to what we thought was seaworthy, minus the amenities. We had a spare electric bilge, tho other parts availability was minimal. At sea, other stuff, unforseen, started to go south. We got pretty far, but after about 2 weeks, we all bailed for safety reasons as more and more broke down. The captain was familiar with the anchorage, as he's done this trip a few times. In spite of how traumatic this was, I wanna go back and get the boat the rest of the way to Florida. I even want my own boat now. Learned a ton. This was my first trip like this ever. Appreciate the feedback Joe!

He spent a week fixing, repairing and testing. Even polished the inside of the fuel tanks. When we left all seemed to be functioning that mattered. But at sea, the bad repairs by the boatyard became readily apparent. One day at a time.
