This isn't always the cause of a rattle. Honda VTEC's often rattle for a couple of seconds on startup when the VTC actuator fails. It's an annoying sound, but does not cause any damage.

@@therealcool1144 That's typical of a VTC actuator failing in a Honda VTEC. Honda has a technical services bulletin (SB 016-012 and subsequent TSB's covering additional years) addressing this and there's also a class action lawsuit over this issue. I had mine replaced under warranty and the sound is gone. I know several Honda VTEC owners who haven't had this issue, so it doesn't affect everyone. Message boards are full of complaints, which Honda service departments are largely ignoring or are unaware the Honda has extended the warranty on these failing VTC actuators.

If you have a Toyota 2009-2012ish with VVT-I... Then this is not your problem. Your cold rattle is from the cam phaser sprockets and mine has been doing it for 230k miles and still does it after an engine rebuild with which my entire timing kit was replaced. The VVT phasers were the only things that weren't replaced... Which is precisely what Toyota was doing to solve this issue under powertrain warranties. For me I believe it is my exhaust cam phaser.
@kenwoods6663 Жыл бұрын
The two second rattle is a noise that cannot be missed. My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe exhibited that sound. These videos gave me a good guess as to what the noise is. I brought the vehicle to my repair shop and they diagnosed the sound as a timing chain issue. They had to keep the vehicle overnight to experience the cold start noise. The cost of repair is $4700. However, the vehicle is in excellent condition with only 133,000 miles on it. It’s worth the money because my daughter drives it and I am not letting her have my 2002 jeep wrangler Sahara - also in pristine condition.

@eminiscalperpro97294 жыл бұрын
mine has been doing it excessively lately. Also, the oil light comes on temporarily. once the pressure is up, it seems ok. It's a second gen xterra with the 4.0l. Do you think it's the tensioner or could it be an oil pressure issue that is not supplying the tensioner correctly? i have heard of many timing chain issues and the oil galley gasket issue with the nisson 3.5 and 4.0
@frankopanklaric4 жыл бұрын
Is your car ok now?
@eminiscalperpro97294 жыл бұрын
Yes it's fine. The primary tensioner guide is what's causing the noise. Pretty common on tbese, the plastic slide on the guide breaks and it slides down, which causes the tensioner plunger to over extend. The area where the tensioner plunger rides is in that plastic slide, so the tensioner now pushes directly on the metal guide. So, it makes a rattling noise b/c of the bad guide. But, I've driven it for probably 10k miles and she is still doing fine. I will be replacing all the timing components n water pump very soon. But, I don't have any oil pump or other engine problems. I have found that the engine seems to like 10w-40 oil over 5w-30. Unless it's extreme cold, then i will continue to use the 10w-40 from now on. Currently using Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic oil. U get more protection in the high heat and it's good to about 0 degrees. The guide issue is pretty common and you may not even know yours is bad. U can remove the small access cover on the front engine cover (passenger side) and look to see if your tensioner is fully extended and not resting on the plastic guide. But luv the X and it's still doing great after 16 yrs.
