Nice demonstration, Anthony. I never thought about the valves being out of adjustment as a reason for the engine having trouble turning over. I've always blamed it on an old starter or old battery. Very helpful. I need to check the Kohler engine on our old John Deere mower now!

Yes, it's a very common problem. If the battery is good, then it's a good place to check. I had hooked up a truck battery to it at one point and it did the same thing. Briggs and Stratton recommend that the valves be adjusted at certain intervals....but most people, myself included, don't adjust them unless they are really out of adjustment. 😃

Oh, I understand now. If one valve is open you know the other is at rest, so you can adjust the one at rest. Thanks!

If you don't have a feeler gauge., use a piece of a pop can- it is close enough. I have been working on mowers for over 60 years
