Engine Problems in Paradise and Snorkeling the Dry Tortugas S02E03

Snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas is an amazing experience as Fishing in the park is prohibited and many species that are rare or are unable to grow very large are abundant in the Dry Tortugas. After snorkeling our small sailboat Atticus gets a line wrapped around it’s prop, causing some very worrisome damage. The question is; will we be able to sail against the trade winds all the way back to Key West with the damage we suffered?

I've come to the conclusion in my ripe old-er age, that nothing worthwhile is easy. No matter what the task, you will run into obstacles. How you deal with them is what matters. You can ignore them and continue blindly through life or take them head-on. You'll make mistakes, but sometimes those mistakes will be remembered long after the fix is completed. Live and learn. You two are very fortunate to have each other as your personalities are so positive. You got this.

Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway. Earl Nightingale (Radio speaker/writer) 28 is still ahead of most in chasing their dreams!

Always remember our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it. A dream doesn't become reality through magic, it takes Faith in God's plans. A dream takes planning and goal setting. A dream takes a lot of determination and hard work. A dream is something you're not willing to give up on when times get difficult. A dream is not easy. Always remember to give thanks to God for your amazing acheivements. I enjoy watching you two living your dreams.

Nice to know not every prop wrap is a complete catastrophe. Once, on my Westsail 43, with an 85hp Perkins 4.236 diesel and a V-Drive, I wrapped a dock line attached to the stern cleat around the prop. I thought I had all my lines in, but I somehow missed that one. It happened in about two seconds. Whop, whop, whop, bang! The torque pulled the whole engine/transmission/v-drive downward into the bilge, and in the process broke the v-drive's cast iron casing at the mount ears, while severely bending the shaft and motor mounts. It took me quite a while to locate a new casing, but I did and I had the shaft straightened (more or less). Needless to say, after that, I installed a line cutter on the shaft. Lesson learned. It was an expensive and time-consuming mistake which has left me a little bit paranoid about doing it again. So, it is somewhat of a relief to hear you have been on boats where not much happened other than stalling the engine. It's also interesting to learn about the vulnerability of an extended shaft tube for when I look for my next (smaller) boat. Thanks for sharing this story.

There was so real honest moments in this video during the reflection. Nice to see unscripted real moments with people sharing the same struggles. Maybe someone can answer this question. It looks like 80% through a Patreon addition to video was added, at the end of the original video. Sort of a after the fact. Is this true? Also if it was, then how can that be done to a video after it has been uploaded to KZbin? I don't even know what the name of that process would be called if there is one. Thanks!

A diesel will run all day without load petrol engine doesn't like to idle all day as it causes problems. I am not an expert. Diesel pumps just idle everyday on farms.

It is true, I've studied Diesel engines (and petrol ones). The only case when it is not recommended to run an engine without load (regardless of type) is when revving it to the max while stationary. This is because without load (without moving your lordships from one place to another) the engine can rev up to a higher speed than the designed one. Lubrication, especially, and cooling possibly may not keep up. You will fry the engine after a while. The generator consumes quite a bit of your engine power, which - depending on your electric consumers on board - you might have noticed in the fuel consumption.

I know this is a long time ago but if anyone wonders. Yes you can run a diesel all day without having it in gear. I worked on a boat for 10 years and we would turn the diesel engines on in the morning and let them run for 10 hours everyday 365 days a year most of the time just in idle with no problems. Just change oil and filters at the recommended hours. Bad cooling and running at very high rpm is the most dangerous for a marine diesel.

Brother I hate to tell you this but whoever told you that it's not good to run a diesel engine without resistance didn't know what they were talking about because I have run diesel engines and worked on diesel engines my entire life and they are designed to run for long periods of time resistance or not it does not matter you do not have to do that really all you're doing is burning extra fuel and putting unnecessary stress on your anchor line PS I just found your channel and I already love it will be following you guys from now on

18 year old needed to take ten years to grow up! And grow up he did. At least IMHO. When I was 18 the Army was drafting youngsters for Viet Nam. I wanted what you have, they weren't buying it. Regardless, I have two questions? First, why didn't you finish the toe rails, you rebuilt them so why leave them to the weather? Second, of all the channels I am following, nearly all of them either repaired or replaced their engine. Apparently you lucked out and yours was in good shape cause I didn't see where it required anything from you? No mention of fuel tanks or other engine related problems I have seen on older boats being refurbished and put back to work. Any how glad you both are enjoying your young lives as world travelers.

Project Atticus from experience cruising, its not about wearing the bearings or overuse or anything like that, the issue with running a marine diesel on idle is that the engine isnt getting the right amount of oil flowing through it to lubricate it properly and that it isnt running at operating temperature, also if you run your motor at the same revs all the time it will unevenly wear the liners and carbon up easier The best thing you can do for it is run it at all different speeds and remember a marine diesel is happiest at around 90% of its running capacity Give her the guts!😁 happy sailing guys ill see you out on the water From brisbane australia
