Everybody stop with thinking! I had this problem on a m278 engine. The m157 amg engine is the same engine but only a 5.5 insteed of 4.7! This is the sound of a (tilting piston in cylinder due to scratches in cylinder wall) Engine is done…. Needs new engine

sir after your inspection , what was the reason behind this sound !!!!!!!!

My E350cgi does the same noise occasionally. It goes away and comes back randomly. When it does it only does at idle speed, sound disappear when engine revs up so it`s surely not mechanical component inside the engine, otherwise the sound would be more louder as rpm goes up. I think it`s fuel injection related...could be the high pressure fuel pump is on its way out or contamintion anywhere in the fuel line.

Hi Tasos, I’m a Mercedes tech in the USA who just bought a 13 ML63 with 110,000 miles with the same exact sound. Mine is currently 100% stock. I’m very interested in what you find. Hopefully for my sake, it’s not bent rods. You truly have a understanding of these engines and a high attention to detail that is missing from most of the shops out there. These videos are usually far more informative than Mercedes training videos. Nice work

hoping this doesn't get lost and im sure you have had many cars come and go since, but i was wondering if this was ever sorted out or if the customer figured out what the issue was. I am having the exact same sound coming from my E63, downpipes and tune as well. my gut reaction was rod bearings but the sound is so odd and randomly goes away. Hopefully you might have an answer, if not i appreciate it anyways the video's have been incredible! thanks again!

Mine does this when in gear. But when in Park or Neutral, it's gone. My guess is the dual mass flywheel. Several other comments on youtube and on the web say the same thing.

Hello! I have the exact same ticking sound from my cls63 with the m157. It doesnt tick the first 30sec after a coldstart, after that it starts to sound quite loud. After driving and getting the oil up to around 90-100c its almost quiet. I have searched like crazy without any answers. I have tried changing oil and doing a engineflush without progress. Is there anyone that has had this problem and found a solution? All answers is appreciated, this is driving me crazy. Thanks

Hi Tasos, so did they car ever come back for you to diagnose what happened?
@persnngtr3255 Жыл бұрын
If it's coming from the bottom it sounds like a two mass flywheel. But I'm guessing that people who are more experienced than me would've checked it. But interesting. I was recently planning on buying W166 ML63 tuned, but didnt buy because the car had exactly same ticking noise, maybe even little louder.

¿Do you really thinknis the flywheel?
@persnngtr3255 Жыл бұрын
@@jurgeenhandazola3006 I really don't know. but if it's coming from the bottom and if it ticks faster as the RPMs go up then flywheel would be the first thing I would check. But then again, I'm just guessing. disks inside tend to become loose and they make that ticking noise. it seems like a lot of ppl are having the same issue but nobody has figured out what it is.
@jurgeenhandazola3006 Жыл бұрын
Removing the transmission just to check up is expensive, I was thinking to remove the engine oil pan and check the bearings, also replace them if they're worn, maybe that fix last for a while.

Hi Tasos, My M278 got the exact same sound. The car was always carefully driven by my father, but he had no moment for checking liquid levels etc. As I took a look back in 2017 there was a huge lack of engine oil! I filled it up but the sound never got better. I even tried changing the oil to a Mobil 10W60 racing oil which didn't made it any better - after that I put in some Lucas Oil Stabilizer - the sound was not getting better anyway. Are you opening the engine now to find the problem or whats the plan? I even mentioned that the power delivery is getting worst by time. Your Videos are mega! Proper work! I wish someone like you would work in Switzerland!

I have the same thing on my M273, not as loud. I've been having if for the past 21000 miles, I've done oil analysis and everything is fine. There is no excessive metal debris in the oil, no smoke on the exhaust tips, no vibrations, the fuel consumption is consistent with what the manufacturer specified and the sound hasn't gotten worse over the past year and a half. I am curious to see what causes it, on mine it seems to be emanating from between cylinders 2 and 3 on the bottom half of the block, towards the engine oil pan. I've also heard this type of sound but somewhat muted on W212 E63s, even on new vehicles. Definitely let us know what you find out about this issue. Good job on the videos, I learned a lot of things watching them! If you ever come to the States I'll treat you with some good Chai.
