You really did your homework especially on the tranny software/hardware and engine hardware/software. Like you said it’s not just a simple bolt in. Lots of things to consider to make it work the minute you first turn on the ignition for first start: troubleshooting would even be more difficult if you do not prepare everything just right. Great build

I got my 4L80E for my 06 Supercharged Regency Tahoe, from Mad Dog Transmissions in Alpharetta GA. I couldn't believe they shipped it to me, unlimited miles 2 years warranty rated at 1000 hp, 3200 stall, all for around 2500 bucks!!. They will also let me extend the warranty NO questions asked, for 300 bucks per year for as long as I own the Tahoe. Pretty crazy, I'm stoked!

Even an old to newer 3800 series II required a few changes. I put a 3800 from an 04 Bonneville in a 98 Olds Regency with bad motor. I wanted a structural oil pan which earlier 3800's didn't have. EGR, Oil pressure sender, ground out a casting feature for the PS pump, oil filter housing was different, had to save old injector rail due to connector differences. And that was supposedly the "same" motor. Year-to-year differences can make a swap not go flawlessly.

I find your often ahead on time and cash just making the "bolt in" stuff from scratch. Something that I do is I will have 2 motor mounts and 2 transmission mounts. I use bolt through biscuit mounts. Grade 8. They do wear out faster. But changing them is extremely easy as they lay on top of the frame or frame mounted bracket. This lets you not only adjust your forward and backward pinion angle but also your engine/transmission/transfer case angle to fine tune pinion angle. You can slide in washers/slugs to adjust the angle easily. I would seriously consider a plate style remote oil filer to just make changing the filter so much easier by having the filter on the inner fender or on a engine mounted bracket.

The last time I did an engine swap, things were just a little less complicated. I stuck an Olds aluminum 215 V8, into my 73 Vega GT. Adapted the Vega 4 speed transmission and bell housing and the whole works weighed 20 pounds more than the clapped out 4 cylinder... There might have been a half dozen wires involved!

Years ago I had an 81 Olds Cutlass coupe with the anemic 4.4L 267 Chev small block V-8 with the smog TH350 lockup trans. Drove it for a few years as a daily, got tired of it's poor performance, then decided to "Grand Nationalize" it. I pulled the motor and trans and swapped in an oval-port 454 on stock exhaust manifolds, and a TH350 non-lock up trans with a slip stall and shift kit. It literally just bolted in, right on the same motor and trans mounts! I did need to notch the rear cross member for exhaust, and I needed short valve covers to clear the AC evaporator housing. I only needed to pull the engine once for measurements and fitment issues. It stayed there on the 2nd installation, luckily not the 15x-20x like Wizard alluded to. The best thing about the swap? When I showed it to my friends they thought it was factory. Nothing sketchy stuck out about it. It fit under the stock hood. Still had cruise control and AC. The factory air filter housing was in place, as well as the radiator fan shroud. The only thing different was the chrome valve covers. Otherwise it looked like it came from the factory that way. Lord, that car was fast - it would break the rear wheels loose at 40 mph if you stomped on it! Sold it a few years later to pay off some debts. I miss that car sometimes. I did have two problems with it. One - it ran hot. All big block Chevys do, even with the high volume water pump and 4 core rad. Two - it could pass everything...except the gas station! Dang did it drain the gas tank! Definitely don't miss the fuel costs - It would be nearly undriveable with today's gas prices, especially with a heavy right foot! On a closing note: like Wizard said, a little bit of research and planning goes a long way. I built that car back in my 20s with NO internet. Just the will to learn, adapt and persevere. That said, today's swaps are definitely harder, considering all the technical issues with computers and emissions, But with the Internet and KZbin, you have great sources of info to get the job done! Don't be scared- get on a car project today! Cheers!
