I've done one before. It was in the early 2000's. I put a B16A VTEC into an '88 Integra 4 Door (trunk not hatch) It was difficult but it was made a lot easier by the Hasport engine mount kit and their axle kit. I did get a shop to do some of the crazy work though but the motor just dropped right in and bolted up without issue because of the Hasport equipment.

I would say my swap is a tier 4. I have a 1987 pontiac fiero with a honda k24 in it. Custom poly engine mounts. Custom shift bracket, custom axles because it's a fwd drivetrain in the rear. Fully custom rear suspension, toyota based. Hardest part? WIRING, holy shit

Not my car, but I helped a buddy build/swap a 4-rotor into a Miata. The swap part was fine, but refitting the apex seals was and absolute nightmare, mostly because we didn't realize they were placed improperly until after we tried to test fire the motor. Basically had to go through the entire process twice because of one little mistake.

Dude, same. I always did DIY on my cars cause I don't have the $$$ for the repair work but I always just saw it as a hassle or chore (mostly cause my cars have always been rust buckets where the head of every bolt snaps off). But now I'm so into it that I was planning out an engine rebuild on my Corolla for a future supercharge. Unfortunately a relative has passed and that means shuffling around the family assets. My Corolla will go to my cousin and I will inherit my grandfather's 05 Camry. As it turns out, the 2AZ-FE in it is very turbo capable. So I'm excited to start planning and installing bits and pieces for the eventual upgrade.

I have a truck, it sat for maybe 10 years waiting for my finances to catch up with the project. I finally said screw it, I'm just going to get it done how I can for now and in the future I can do it for real. So now I'm driving my straight 6 to v8 swapped m715 around and it cost minimal, like less than 1500 bucks to swap it. You can do it for cheap if you let go of any high end visions you may have and just build to your budget. It's possible to do, make some more fabricator friends to learn from, find some car people with extra parts laying around, get a cheap donor car and hack it up. Like my truck is to me, your project may not be what you really dreamed about but you'll be doing it, building your skills and enjoying what you've built. When money catches up you'll be in a better place to use it wisely because you'll have been through the process already.

I've done an engine swap on a Focus that I still own. I have a 2002 Ford Focus SE and found a wrecked SVT that was in Florida. We salvaged the entire wiring harness from the wrecked one included the bigger brakes on an SVT. I had to swap out the wiring harnesses and had to spice in some wiring from my old harness because the donor harness had been damaged in one of the front corners. I was honestly surprised as how well everything bolted up into place. Most of my money was spent on new CV axles, brake lines, new SVT wheels to fit the new brakes, and various other things I'm sure I'm forgetting. I had a lot of help from my dad and grandpa who are master mechanics in their own right. I did it mostly for the learning experience and bragging rights.

I've actually seen someone do a same-swap on a VW Golf TDI in under 4 hours without a hoist. Similarly, I've known expert mechanics take over a year to do a swap with an engine that was twice the size of the original. It all depends on the amount of prep and fabrication that's needed.

4 hours? You need an older VW. I've seen a "same swap" (actually the same engine out and back in) done in under a minute by four guys on a classic Beetle. And only using a floor jack because the engine goes in from underneath. Apparently this is a competition among VW enthusiasts with a strictly defined set of rules. Granted any "real" engine swap would require transferring over a bunch of components, cooling tins, carburetor, exhaust, and so on, not really a "real world" situation.

I’ve did a “tier 4” back in the early 90’s, installed a 12a in to a 1974 Triumph Spitfire. I did all the motor work and mounts while my mate I raced with did the suspension and drivetrain. The rear diff was truck AF with inboard mounted brakes. The entire frame was no stiffened, doors hollows out to accommodate the sides of the roll-cage. It was already a tight fit, so we made the sides of the cage extend into the doors and Roll hoops over the seats. If I ever do a stage 4 again I think I’ll stay more on the path and just do a Volvo C30 AWD swap and lift it using a moisture of XC70/XC90 suspension components. There’s different levels of “stage 4”, there’s mapped and unmapped. Mapped being it’s been done before and while there no kit there is the knowledge that it’s possible and maybe notes cans advice can be found. The second is off the map, here you are ignore all the warning and advice given to by others and with an idea in hand you forge a path into the unknown. At the time the RX triumph with inboard brakes was never done or we at least never met anyone who didn’t it before. It was very trying but at the end of the day it was simple cause cars of that era didn’t come loaded with computer systems that have locked proprietary software. My bit of advice to others is simply this, if you have to ask to many questions and are looking to purchase tools you don’t own or never used don’t go forward with this. It doesn’t matter if you have $10,000 in your pocket to buy the best well there is that $10,000 will not buy you the years of skill needed to lay a bead that structural. So if you’re looking at doing some sort of crazy swap be at putting all V8 into something that shouldn’t have a V-8 or Lodine 1200 pounds of batteries and I would like to find your vintage car you should think carefully before doing so.

I agree, if you have to ask a bunch of questions you are not ready to do a tier 3 or tier 4 engine swap. I swapped a Ford 4.6 engine and transmission from a 1995 Thunderbird into a 1984 F150. I had no knowledge of anybody doing this exact swap. I would consider this smack dab between tier 3 and tier 4 . There was no kit, however it just wanted to go in there. I did fab my own motor mount brackets, but used actual motor mounts from a 1997 F150 (first year the F150 got a 4.6 from the factory) The transmission bolted to the factory crossmember in the stock location, driveshaft from the Tbird was the perfect length all I had to do was swap the pinion flange. Both the Tbird and the F150 had a 8.8 inch rear end so no problem there. The 84 was originally a carb , so a new fuel tank and pump from a 1995 F150 bolted right into place. Used the fuel lines from the Tbird with very little modification. The most time consuming part was the wiring. I printed wiring diagrams from both vehicles and taped them together on a wall. Cut a bunch of unnecessary stuff from the Tbird harness and spent a few hours a day for about a week modifying the harness to work. Swapped the factory 2.47 gears (not a typo, that was the stock ratio) to a set of 3.55 gears, rebuilt a craigslist traclok unit to get both rear wheels spinning. Truck would get 20 mpg or better if I was light on the throttle, but would get up and go. 1984 was one of the lightest F150's built. It was a regular cab short bed 2wd truck, with me in it and a full tank it weighed 3500 lbs! This was no race truck, but it was still fun to drive. I have a few videos of this truck posted on my channel, before the swap and I made a slide show video of the actual swap. I never did make a video of the truck running after the swap, and now that truck is gone. Wish I would have made a video.

Nothing against the rest of the crew but Jobe is my favorite. I have helped a buddy do a swap with same engine ( used in multiple vehicles) and everything went smoothly until we learned that whatever it came out of had a slightly deeper oil pan and it was so minimal that everything lined up and could have been bolted but the pan was sitting on the cross member and obviously that was a problem since when running who knows what would happen. We pulled it and luckily the pan and pickup from old motor was in good shape and worked on new motor. Definitely a minimal issue considering everything that could happen and a valuable lesson for future when using a motor used in multiple vehicles even when you give all information to engine shop and I’m not sure they would have known because it could have been a mid run change.

My first swap was a b18c in a 93 eg vx. Previous to the swap the most I think I did was like an intake manifold swap besides a bunch of basic maintenance on the car. Took me two weeks to pull the old engine and put the new one in. Another almost three weeks to figure out the harness. After two weeks of research and cutting and sautering I could finally get it running but it would cut out spark intermittently where it was too unreliable to drive. The day I figured out it was a bad pin on a ground on the shock tower connector that ran to the ecu... It wasn't when I started the car and shook the harness and it didn't die. It wasn't when I drove it around the city and it didn't die. It was when I first cracked v tec and shifted from first to second and broke those tires loose I straight up cried. People don't get it when ur driving around an old junker with a treasure under the hood. Something special when u swap an engine. With all that said, I can do the swap in a day now lol.

I believe the hardest part is not getting the motor itself in... It's always the electrical part. Wiring. Ecu adaptations and so forth. The newer the model the more of this becomes a concern. It especially starts getting worse when you try to adapt different parts together on a stock ecu. ( Stand alones can get pricey and aren't always available )

My engine swap in my Z was like a tier 1.5. Went from a non turbo engine to twin turbo so had to deal with the intercooler piping and such which wasn’t too bad because the VG30DETT belongs in a 300ZX. Wasn’t same same but wasn’t a “similar swap” because it’s really like going from an NA Supra and putting in a GTE Also, Will is so cool and humble. Had the pleasure of seeing his car at a show hosted by Greddy in Irvine. Thing is absolutely rad and he talked with my dad and I for a while about the process of building the car! Swapped a EFI 5.0 HO / AOD into a F-150 that came with a carb'd 302 / C6. Mount points lined up on the block and trans, but I had to modify the accessory mounts, make my own wiring harness, and run custom fuel lines. Also did a custom fuse block in the cab and had to re-route how the starter worked. Maybe it was a tier 3. Hardest part was the wiring to retain the EFI in a carb truck without a kit or purchased parts. Took 8 Saturdays to do the entire swap.

I definitely agree that engine rebuilds can far exceed the price of a tier 1 swap. I got over 4k in a gen1 sbc and that's not even with top tier components (but definitely some upgrades). Rebuilds can be very satisfying though but be prepared for a lot of time and money. (I could've made cheaper power with a tier 2 swap 😭)

Toyota Yaris), it's awesome but yeah, the issues never stop coming, engine management and communication with the rest of the car's electronics (for modern cars anyway) are also a huge pain. Hey Zach or anyone else, I’m looking for a first car I have no clue which one of the following to get, I live in a small town with all four seasons very present, my options are a jeep renegade with 4x4 obviously, and oldish truck maybe a Colorado or something like that, or a Volkswagen gti, if I could get some advice that’d be great, I love donut since I was 12 thank you guys. Keep it juiced!
@TrippinBusa2 жыл бұрын
If in all four seasons I would recommend an AWD vehicle or 4x4. I am a Floridian but travel to places where it gets snow. My car is FWD and does sorta ok, but this is with all season tires as well so I also recommend tires for appropriate temps, I went skidding through a 4 way stop while full on the brakes with all seasons and going less than the suggested speed limit. Good insurance too, especially if it covers uninsured motorists. That has saved me multiple times too. These are my personal experiences not hard fact. My biggest suggestion is get something you enjoy driving every day and you will never be unhappy with your car.
@Bradmiration2 жыл бұрын
I live in Canada where the snow gets bad and the plow drivers don't give a fuck. Buy an old corolla. It may be 2wd but as long as you keep the wheel straight and throw on some good tires itll handle the snow no problem. It being your first car, don't go for 4x4 or awd, more expensive parts, insurance and lower fuel economy

I’ve been enjoying my hummer h3, I live in Ohio so it sees all seasons. Has absolutely no trouble with traction and deep snow. But if you were to get one make sure it’s a 2008-10 and make sure someone who knows what they’re looking for take a look at it before buying. They usually range from about 8-10k

Kinda funny how popular 2jz swaps are but in the racing world all 90s Toyota anything including supras ran 4 banger 503e or 3sgte and then later on swapped 2jz for 1uz. The 2jz could never stack up to the 3s or 1u in racing applications. Straight lines it works good though.

A good example of issues is with the older 350 small blocks the 3.5s for GM and well a-lot of motors. There was various oil pan designs. The smart thing is to swap the oil pan out but I have had some REAL interesting things come in with motor related issues where instead of swapping the pan they did some handy man welding / bolting / cutting. Just stating this for anyone out there that MAY be looking into swapping a similar motor to just check any differences between your old one and new one to see where issues may be or things may require swapping over.
