Jaaa. I just realized why I enjoy watching your channel. It’s like when people see a car accident and instead of driving everyone slows down to see what happened. I also enjoy watching someone struggle like the rest of us and find out if they figure it out. We were all you at some point. I still learn from your videos too as I’m sure a lot of other newbies do so keep making these videos and let us learn from your mistakes. Honestly I bet most people are where you are and these videos help out a lot. Most dudes are not like those high budget car shows with all the equipment and full editing team. They are just like you and me. DIY guys. Getting it done.

I don't know if it's too late to number the cylinder heads and pistons at this point, the pistons may only need piston rings and the con rods might benefit from a little PB Blaster and heat before you remove them, if that's what you're going to do. The surface rust isn't something I've seen before but it's light. I've only rebuilt one of these engines but I'd say pressure wash it and get a specialist verdict (I don't know if you've put together a short youtube video of less than two minutes, it might work quite well for this purpose. If the corrosion is minor, a rebuild is possible - it might weaken the case as I'm sure you're aware and it could be prone to leaks as well as not lasting that long.

Mustie1 once fixed an engine that was a lot worse than this one in terms of aluminium corrosion and reckoned it would last another 50k miles or so.

Good call on trying to preserve and use some of the parts. A shame it’s mostly a goner. But; like you say; after a good cleanup many things could turn out to be good, including the case. The cases on those 1200s due to their low power didn’t get the pounding that the larger engines got. You might be surprised.

Holy smokes. That thing is toasted. I’m surprised when you said it’s no good. That doesn’t seem like CT. Honestly I would soak everything in a bucket of parts cleaner and see how it looks after. Then you can make a better decision if something is trash. Seems like OG German 40 horse parts are getting harder to find. I wouldn’t worry about saving certain parts for this project though unless you plan to keep the engine stock. You might be able to keep the stock look and upgrade the internals. If not you can sell the good stuff on samba maybe. Or just keep them as wall art. Jaaa. I feel like all og German parts are collectible now even if it’s trash.

Most of it could be cleaned up and be okay, barring wear/corrosion-pitting, but yeah, that case is pretty sorry! I'm surprised the cam-gear is still there! Those usually get eaten away when they sit in water. I've got some cams where several teeth rotted off! (like the bottom of the case did) Crank wouldn't be too tough, nice bath in evaporust or do some electrolysis to it, same for the rods. But you really hit the nail on the head when you asked- Is it worth the time? Depends on the costs you want to pay. You either pay in time spent cleaning, some of which will reveal a part isn't usable, or you pay for new parts. I think it'd be an impressive thing to get that running with as many original parts as possible, not counting wear items like bearings, but it definitely wouldn't be worth the huge amount of effort! I look forward to the art-pieces!

Hehe, hidden archeologic treasures inside.. Waw, that's a wonderful left in the water to rot machine. You certainly know it's serious, when aluminum gets corroded and some mice took a piss on it.. 🤔 Could it be refurbished? Probably with an insane amount of work and parts, but if you want someting "more", then you replace it. I wonder how mine is gonna be, when I'll open it up.. It leaks a bit of water in the oilpan, producing some milkshakle... Cheers, Mr. CT, slowly something is going to be born.. 😉
