Thank goodness for this video... beyond helpful! I wish I would have watched this sooner. I was about to buy a new starter today. You mentioned in your "changing out an Impala starter" video to check out the video of why else a car may not start (ran into Chipotle, came out, and my car would not start - does the one-click thing). The tow truck driver said it was probably the starter but had a difficult time trying to tap on the starter housing - as you know it's tucked away in the '06 Impala's poor design under the hood. Thanks for the re-motivation to figure it out. If it's something simple, I am going to kick my own a%#... I will post an update. 🙂

One loud click can sometimes be a loose or corroded battery terminal..so i would make sure theyre tight and clean...hopefully something like that..if not yea i do have a impala starter replacement video

Thorough, dude. Thanks. I've eliminated a bunch of things to fix the intermittent no-click no-crank in my 09. Cut-relay, clean grounds, battery, etc. I think at this point, I'm need to bit the bullet and just throw a starter in it.

I like to have a helper turn the key over as I tap on the starter. I long extension and hammer help get to "hard to reach" starters. Don't be afraid to give it some pretty good taps. Thank you, great video!

On modern day cars remember the computer has control over the starter relay and then controls the solenoid always take corrosion into account at the battery terminals when you change a new battery and increase the cold cranking amp when you buy a new one

we cleaned terminals like in the video. and cut and cleaned the battery harness. didn’t start still and that’s when the computer wouldn’t read to motor or trans. i did order a new battery harness too but need to diagnose further before instal.

My 06 sometimes won't turn over because the gearshift start switch isnt connecting. If I rock the car back and forth a few times while in park then try it, it starts no problem. The switch is probably worn in the shifter housing.

Alot was left out what if the starter or battery or the issues was the problem then it could be a relay a bad wire a ground issue the ignition switch a bad fuse and sometimes possible the computer

It might be the battery. My 2016 Honda Civic ran outa gas at the gas pump then it wouldn’t start. Hard to believe the battery died right after the car was on but I jump started the battery & it turn on.

If its a rapid clicking usually means its either got a weak battery or the connection is dirty unable to send a strong crank signal

What if it's an electrical issue between the relay and the fuse box? My mechanic says my battery, starter, and alternator are all good, but my car still won't start. His initial diagnostic test found the electrical signal is getting lost somewhere between the relay and the fuse box. Last year same problem. All they did was tighten a wire on the back of the fuse box, and it started. Maybe it's the same issue again, but what if it's not? What could it be?

Is it the original cables with original terminals? Sometimes people replace the terminal and the corrosion like that gets between the terminal and cable strands and that does affect the connection..but normally on originals it won't affect it to that extreme

Try moving the cables then try to crank it..if u notice it works like that..then it could be possibly ur battery cables..if it doesnt help then u may have a starter issue

YEAH THE TERMINALS ARE NOT THE ORIGINALS BUT I ALSO PEELED BACK SOME OF THE INSULATION AND I SEE SOME GREEN. I TRIED MOVING THE TERMINAL CONNECTIONS BUT NO LUCK. @@DOALLLABOR yea those terminals tend to have problems like that..i would use sandpaper on the wire portion to clean it up and see if it helps..if not then yea probably the starter...i do have a video on an impala for replacing the starter which for some years is similar to the monte carlo.

2015 Civic intermittently won’t start. Will hear a single loud click when I press the start button, and another click when I let go. Had the battery tested and they said that my alternator was bad, checked the voltage before and afterwards and they were right. But a couple days afterwards the problem returned. And it’s happening more frequently now too.

Sounds pretty similar to a 2005 honda civic problem i had..that i did a video on and it ended up being the starter..but kinda early for a starter to go out..maybe u can listen to the sound see if its the exact same sound

Does ur battery look corroded at thw terminals in any way? If so i would start by cleaning em, a bad connection at battery could cause the click..if that doesnt help..have u tried jumpstarting it? If so did it help? If none of those help it could be a problem with ur starter

@@Sleeplessinsimi no problem...have u tried jumpstarting the car? .if ur batterys drained u can jumpstart it and if it starts that way u can have battery tested at a few auto parts stores if u have one locally that does it for free, u can avoid buying those meters least the more expensive battery tester one..the multimeter is very useful..that one may be good to purchase either way

Yea usually a struggling starter can be a sign that the starters worn out..and colder it gets the harder it is on the starter cause the oil is thickens in the cold

Hey, I have a 2009 Honda Civic dx 1.8l engine. It recently started having starting issues. I live in cold weather and I never had issues this winter even with 3 feet of snow and really cold temperatures. However, just a few after the weather starting warming up and I noticed it wouldn't start when I turned the key all the way. All I hear is a single click. I hear the fuel pump come on in the ON position. I have checked the battery with a multimeter and it's always above 12.5. Interior lights come on and headlights do not flicker. it starts with a boost from another vehicle. however, sometimes it starts after trying 3-4times and it doesn't have issues until I turn it off and leave it overnight or for few hours. I am not sure if it is the ignition switch or the starter that is the issue. I do not hear a sound coming from the footwell area where the relay is. It is basically having intermittent starting issues right now. What could possibly be causing this? I have not tapped on the starter to see if it helps. it starts up randomly after several tries like normal. I don't know if I should replace the starter or maybe it's the ignition switch. Any help would be appreciated.

Like it cranks slow? Have u had ur battery tested to check the cranking amps on it, if its an older battery and low cranking amps itll struggle to spin over..I would also clean the battery terminals and check the ground for the negative wire to eliminate that..if that checks out fine..it may end up being the starter motor thats old and worn.

I Step on clutch, (could the clutch have anything to do with it?) turn the key in the ignition and dead, but all lights and dash light up. Seems to work second or third try, then runs perfectly. My mechanic said spark plugs (no symptoms of spark plug issues from what I am reading), another says starter, but I am thinking there's a connection problem, thats why I found your video very interesting. Is what I am saying a symptom of a starter problem? thank you indeed

@@AR-pr6mt i replaced the starter on a 2005 honda civic which i have a video on..it would click anywhere from 1-3 tries then it would finally work..soon as i replaced starter..it worked great..it does have a clutch safety switch but normally when those go out they dont really have intermittent problems unless it was adjustment issue but if u hold pedal completely down and still randomly does it then its most likely not due to clutch safety switch.

My 2012 on first start attempt doesn't crank. You can let the key go and do it a dozen times. Same thing. But as soon as you turn the key to the off position and try it once more it will start no problem?

My 08 randomly started giving like 7 error codes. P0498, P0847, P0756 , P0135 and more 😭. Car was fine all day, I parked up for let’s say 2 hrs after seeing all these codes and now nothing turns on. Well the codes are transmission codes and evap code and oxygen sensor code...the drive flashing could be a problem with the torque converter on ur transmission have u checked ur transmission fluid based on all the transmission codes...as far as the car not cranking..have u tried jumpstarting it? if nothing turns on it could be ur battery cables are loose..the battery's completely drained or the battery's bad.

Well if not cranking..i would remove the starter solenoid wire..which is that lil smaller wire on starter..if u have a voltmeter or a test light..have someone turn key to crank it and see if its getting signal...if it doesnt then that means ignition switch isnt sending the crank signal..so if ur not getting crank signal at that point I would make sure the green key light on dash is off..if so then yea might be ignition switch or wiring from switch to starter

Theres also a starter relay that can cause a no crank issue and also the neutral safety switch..thatll cut off the crank signal if the car doesnt think its in park or neutral

okay so my car was making a clicking noise before the car stopped turning on. i thought it was a bad starter but my bro said my ground battery cable was bad because there were wires showing out of the heat shrink on it. i thought it could have been internally corroded causing bad power all over. would this cause the starter not enough power or to completely cut power. or could it be that it’s electrically ruining everything in the car ?? that’s what i’m more concerned about. my bro said his snap on computer won’t connect to engine or transmission and thinks it’s ecu computer bad

Rapid clicking? Rapid clicking usually means a loose or corroded connection..or ur battery may be discharged or bad(low on cranking amps), have u tried jumpstarting it?..well the cable as long as the terminals on the wire have a good tight crimp it should be fine...if the scanner wont connect..I would test the battery or could be the ecu fuse blew

@@TheHvymtllvr69 well either ur starter pinion is broken or damaged..or the flywheels ring gear is damaged...or worst case is the engines stuck..what u can do is put a bolt on the main engine bolt..spin it a lil to make sure engine is fine..if it spins it might help the gear catch if the flywheel ring gear is damaged

Does it by chance spin faster than normal? Or does it crank the same but just doesnt start? Cause normally with hondas the most common reason it cranks but doesn't start is due to the timing belt snapping..but if u have testing equipment..id start with checking the compression that would tell me if the timing belt is in tact and if everything internal is fine..then id check for spark..to make sure the ignition coils are firing...and also check fuel pressure to make sure the computer is sending the injector pulse

@@LM-lj2cf if the starter solenoid failed, it wont react to hitting it, since its the electrical portion of it failing...hitting it helps when its the mechanical part of the starter failing

my 02 civic ex won’t start. no crank. the check engine light came on and nothing felt wrong. no weird smells or anything. I get home and turned the car off and it hasn’t started since. im not sure what the issue could be.

@@gtjackson well could be anything from the ignition switch..starter relay..neutral safety switch (which doesnt let u crank car in drive or reverse)..but those are more rare occasion that they go out..its more commonly the starter when the basics check out

@@cococrack which light was flashing? The check engine light? If so..when that light flashes it means u got a misfire..but that tic tic noise can be a bad sign if it happened after u boosted it..youll wanna make sure nothing happened to the engine..what i would do is look around the engine and under make sure no oil is leaking..if its fine..then try and get a ratchet and a socket on the harmonic balancer bolt to spin it just to make sure the engine spins fine..if it does spin..try checking the stuff on the video..maybe try to jumpstart it..just to see if it helps..if still doesnt crank, it could just be that the starter went out..they do just suddenly go out.

@@backyardchevy328 i explain you , this morning i use the car after i park the car on my driveway but i forgot to close my headlight so at the end of the day i try to start it and the battery was gone so i try to jumpstart it but my dashlight work no green key holding but the car juste isnt crank..can be a fuze?

@@cococrack well if ur battery drained completely..how long did u charge it for? Normally takes over an hour of charging to charge fully..if its not fully charged it wont wanna start til it gets fully charged..or could be that the battery went bad..sometimes all it takes is one bad discharge to ruin a battery...if battery is fine and charged..it might just be the starter

Backyard Chevy 2006 same engine, I found it! I’m having the same issues. Won’t turn over, I replaced the ignition switch and relay still nothing. When I turn to start I get a click from the relay and nothing after that

hey i have kind of the same problem. i have an 08 honda and my car never turns on. i have to use a jump starter to get it to turn over. Ive replaced the battery 4 times this year and when i connect jump pack to jump start it it struggles to turn on. What do you think it could be?

Does it do that even right after when u replaced the battery with a new one..or is it good for a while then it happens again say after a few months?

@@backyardchevy328 if i replace the battery, it takes a few days to a week or two before the car just doesnt turn on. right now when i go to start the car is completely dead wihth nothing turning on, when i connect the pack, it kinda comes to life and when i turn the key it struggles but turns over. after that it runs fine but once i turn it off its dead again. ive replaced the alternator about a year ago and the starter about 4 years ago.

@@doinurmomsz sounds like somethings draining ur battery or u have a short..i would look for anything staying on and killing ur battery..thats also why it struggles to turn on with jumper cause when batterys really drained it doesnt get enough cranking amps to start up strong.

@@doinurmomsz geez that batterys really dead definitely a battery issue why it doesnt start, but finding out whats killing ur battery...does that car sit a lot, like for weeks? If not then u wanna check the voltage while running to see if alternator is charging ur battery, (but then again it wouldnt stay running if alternator was bad)

Sounds like a bad battery or dirty battery terminals..but normally with dirty terminals u still get lights..itll just click when u try to start it..so im leaning towards battery
