Neat idea, but probably would be hard to pull off right, in practice. Getting the rig lined up with the wind would be difficult within the constraints of a parade, and parades often don't move quickly enough, if there's no wind.

Might need to add a few things, but I am sure it is doable. 1. Make the vehicle smaller. Cars are cool, but may not be the best suited for bubble creation. 2. Put the vehicle near the front, or at the front, of the parade. This ensures that it doesn't stop, or rarely stops, and so maximizes the time the vehicle can generate it own air. 3. If it is a very slow moving parade then the addition of a way for the bubble maker to swing around to face in a direction that it can pick up the natural wind. These 3 things would make the design more feasible for Parade use. Though honestly the wagon design would probably be sufficient.

Two simple solutions could be putting a fan in front of it, or using the smaller skateboard-sized machine and just riding it around in a gap in the parade.

Love the hypothesis, great video 👍🥰 A bubble is always heavy, due to gravity. Please experiment using a heat source, so that it becomes a "hot air bubble" - this can be tuned to a gravity neutral, or even rising bubble. If you also use a fan, you don't need a moving vehicle. I experimented with this - small scale/short time using a hairdryer (pulled back a little) as an air supply. That was very promising 😊

As a fellow mechanical engineer, who has spent quite a lot of time designing a foam canon and working with a lot of soap, well done! 👏 An infinite bubble of course cant be done, as the bubble bursts when the liquid in the bubble falls to the buttom side and the top of the bubble gets to fragile. One idea that would be extremely cool: put a fog machine on the roof of the car and make huge fog bubbles! 🍾😊

@@ryangross5446 what I'm saying is that as long as you are doing it with gravity present, the bubble will burst at some point. There are however ways to extend it's longivity. The lube he adds works because it slows the fall of the liquid and adds rigidity.

I guess all bubbles burst as the water evaporates… you should collaborate with someone who lives in a tropical area where the humidity is higher and see if you can get the bubbles to last longer.

Evenings, areas where a breeze flows off water or shortly after a rain will maximize the bubble life. Low dust, away from airports, and away from smoke from forest fires, the particulates pop the bubbles as well. Distilled water and knowing the test results from the baking powder and guar gum will help increase the quality of bubble.

LOVE IT!! One of my favorite places in my hometown was a children’s science center and you would step onto this raised platform that was sunk into the ground next to a moat of bubble solution and there was a pulley system that would lift a rope hoop up… needless to say it was not 50ft, but it was always cool as hell to get a floor-to-ceiling bubble tube that was at least 20ft pop right in front of you and watch it disappear

i believe the turbulence left behind the car may be acting too aggressive on the bubble, which would explain why it seems to pop at random points. i believe putting this contraption on a fastback sedan or coupe, and/or mounting it significantly higher would likely yield better results.

Amazing work man! Please, you have to try it indoors! Some big warehouse or stadium. Vehicle notes: attach this to an ebike or scooter. I think you have to reduce air turbulence near the bubble, seek inspiration from airplanes. The ideal vehicle might be a flat e-motor 4-wheel "electric car skateboard" with the 2 servo-actuated arms sticking up.

I'd love to see you add in some coding that can dynamically change the flow rate, etc based on the car's speed. Then, you'd also want to close the bubble loop at points so that it can detach and be an actual bubble. Very fun video.

The variability in the winds were probably causing lots of variability. They're generally calmest at sunrise if you go again. I'd love to see you rig an anemometer to some kind of e-bike/scooter to have it drive at the exact speed to get the wind pressure needed dynamically.

Very nice. I appreciate the fact that you started by looking into the work done (or at least the results of work done) by others interested in giant bubbles. There will be a gathering of bubble people in Cleveland this September … you or others might be interested. Allow me to comment on a few of the suggestions that others have presented on this page. I think that it’s fair to quibble about whether an open bubble is actually a “bubble” but it is one of the records that the Guinness people considered and there are different records for these long open tubes as well as closed bubbles . Some have suggested that evaporation is a concern regarding the popping of soap bubbles and, yes … bubbles are typically thinner than wavelengths of light (it’s why they have colors) so only a tiny bit of its tiny bit of water needs to evaporated on any portion of the bubble/tube and that will happen more quickly on a dry day than a humid one. Others mentioned the quality of the air and that is certainly a concern to people making big bubbles. The tiniest bit of dust or pollen in the air has the ability to do to these monstrous bubbles what children do with their fingers … pop. But I don’t think that these videos show popping that comes from those common sources. Left in the air long enough, evaporation will certainly become a concern but most of these bubbles popped either from the stress or from touching the ground. Alan McKay, in Wellington, New Zealand set the record for bubble tubes of this sort when he created one that was 105 feet (32 meters) long. Alan pioneered this idea of using long poles and string, a device that bubble people often refer to as a Tristring. He didn’t use a car and in his experiments, his poles got longer and longer as he found that the limits were mostly related to the giant bubble tubes touching the ground. On the day of his record, he credits the wonderfully cooperative breeze that helped hold up the thing as he backed into the wind and kept walking (no car). Others mentioned the possibility that the turbulence around the moving car was breaking bubbles and that is something to consider but I don’t see much of that. That polyethylene oxide in the J-Lube has made the bubble extremely flexible and we see it responding to the wind, the movement and the turbulence by distorting from the bubble’s preferred spherical shape in response. But the thing often splits up into multiple bubbles rather than burst when it is that flexible. This is a wonderful video, thank you for showing us. The concerns that you faced have been addressed by others and the idea of pumping fluid and widening the opening and increasing the speed have also been addressed. Consider coming to Cleveland this September or look for the organization called AOIBA, an international group of bubble people. You’d fit right in.

I don't think you got either the largest bubble or bubble making machine, but that was a really cool project! I've mulled over ways to pump bubble fluid to my strings when I'm making giant bubbles and came up with a solution that was pretty close to yours. Ultimately the most important factor for making the largest giant bubble possible is the air quality, with your bubble solution being the next most important factor. Technique is another important thing. You would have better luck with some smooth laminar offshore ocean wind in the morning. Your car was creating quite a bit of turbulence in the air that filled and surrounded your bubble. I say all of this with about 15 years experience making giant bubbles.

I am excited. Based on your proposed hypothesis my prediction is as follows. 1 as the bubble expands in volume the surface area will increase by significantly more, this requires more solution. 2 in the event of perfect theoretical execution there would eventually be a point where the solution could not travel from the source to the end fast enough to overcome expansion. In summary, i predict a maximum limit even in ideal circumstances. I hope i'm right

Showing how to learn from failure is something we need more of. Nice build. Two things tickling my brain: 1) I bet there's some turbulence from the car itself that's destabilizing the bubble. 1.5) you could build a foam fairing for the back of your car like hypermilers do. Or maybe use a fan...? 2) To help weigh down the string and ease overall weight on the rods, the tubing could come from below and run up the wicks maybe...? Just spitballing here.

Thanks Winston! As much as I wish I could get it right on the first try every time, its just not the way it works! The turbulence thing might be a factor. Although I wasnt moving that fast so I would guess the air is still in a somewhat laminar state. This would be cool to cfm! A fairing could be cool to test! Running the wicks up may help, only one way to find out 🤓

Bubble science is surprisingly fascinating. I saw some research with them finding all sorts of uses for bubbles. Utilizing them in different tasks. Also I saw NASA recently measured a giant bubble that is around our entire solar system that is created by our sun's cosmic rays lol. I guess that boundary layer interacts with the surrounding cosmic neighborhood. That might help us learn more about space. Like the interactions between stars, galaxies, black holes. It's interesting to think the study of bubbles can span from very small scale systems to very large scale systems? I recommend looking up and watching videos that focus on the research & studies on the science of bubbles. Nature really is fascinating and I think bubbles just have this natural way of getting us to ponder about physics and all the other ways that Nature behaves. Bubbles are fun

Try this one. The humidity is higher on a cloudy day. Water will evaporate much slower from the bubble. You could probably get a bigger one

Maybe try adding glycerine to the bubble solution. It helps keep the water in, as far as I know.

If you put an adjustable spoiler at the front of the roof of the car, you can play with the dymamics of the air going into your bubble, it looks like it needs more air, but not faster air. I have a suspicion this will be like tuning a carburetor, but infinite bubble probably is possible.

Clearly... I think (lol), it is because you are trying it outside, that is the reason why you get breaks at different places as the wind hits differently and then the whole movement also does on the bubble too, Try in inside.
