You should definitely join a club/research. Any way to obtain experience will help you a lot when landing your first internship. But of course, don’t let it negatively impact your academics (a small drop is fine, but don’t start failing because of it).

I had a video interview like this about manufacturing anti corrosive materials to go in gas pumps. I started to talk about how I got prosecuted then I got endorsed for president of the united states of america and the interviewers were dumbfounded. They concluded that I seemed like a good fit for a theoretical career in academia.
