The 2016 Acura ILX is an entry-level luxury sedan with an innovative transmission, great fuel economy, and a solid audio system. Under the hood is a 2.4L inline four cylinder engine with i-VTEC producing 201 horsepower at 6800 RPM and 180 lb-ft of torque at 3800 RPM. One of the ways they were able to increase low end torque was by using a dual-stage intake manifold. There’s a set of four butterfly valves which are used to actuate the process. At low RPM, the air travels through a long set of runners, improving low end torque. At higher RPM, the system switches over to a short set of intake runners for increased high end power. This works in combination with the VTEC system, where at engine speeds above 4900 RPM the intake system shifts to a high lift, long-duration cam profile for more top end power. Engine torque is sent through an 8-speed dual clutch transmission to the front wheels.
Plenty of convenience and luxury features as well:
Navigation
Adaptive Cruise Control
Collision Mitigation Braking System
Dual zone climate control
Lane Keep Assist
10 Speaker ELS Sound System
Rear View Camera
MSRP As Tested: $35,810

I've seen some people bashing this car and saying it's basically a re-badged Civic. They ain't got a clue what they're talking about. The ILX is a fantastic car imo. Great review!

+NickLAUZ95 Only thing they share is a compact car size. I think previous ILX really damaged it's image because it was in fact a rebranded civic. Thanks god acura fixed it in this version.

I just got one with 23k miles. I always had an older car, never a nice one with this type of engine. I was nervous about some sounds but people said DCT will act and sound different than a traditional automatic.

You're definitely right about that because this car is much more than just a boring crappy Honda Civic!!! To me it puts the Honda Civic to shame. Seeing how it has the same power as Civic SI and more power than a Civic EX and LX and has way more features than any of the Civics

DCT with a TC is the best option next to traditional manual IMO. All the current DCT's that are out there today suffer from "lurching" and "hesitation" at low speeds, the TC solves that. There is a negligible amount of power loss and MPG from the weight of the TC but the negatives far outweigh the negatives! I love this car...

I bought my new 2020 in early September for just under 24k in performance red in a premium A Spec package. Gives much more sporty look and better seats with the must have led fog lamps. I choose one with ebony colored seats rather then bright red typically in them. I would have loved to have gotten the tech package though but they weren't very common in my area with A Spec package. The continental tires handle well but can be loud on certain surfaces wish they had summer tire option or just used michelin pilots on the A Spec. How did you do on yours? What color did you pick?

Yes, yes, I know I comment a lot... But hey I love your videos more than any other reviewer, your reviews are not biased, they are good quality, you speak clearly, your reviews are in excellent detail as you cover absolutely everything and you actually review "the car". Where other channels just bring personal opinion into everything. When you do you always back it up and you always see the other side of the argument. But with that little thankyou over with... I assume you request cars? If so, I know you like Subaru, would you be able to try and get your hands on a 2015/2016 Forester XT I would really like that. Got an Outback 3.6R and I would say it's pretty quick as you get a decent amount of torque out of it, but the XT forester seems like the best of both worlds. Just sad they didn't make the Outback a turbo. But anyway if you could get your hands on and review a Forester XT that wold be much appreciated. Thankyou for reading this if you did, I really love your videos and please keep it up!

I never understood why engineers never found a way to use a torque converter for 1st gear in manual transmissions. By doing that, hill starts (in cars without a hill holder) would be much easier, and the clutch's lifespan would increase dramatically. I can see why this wouldn't be necessary in all cars, because it is more weight, complexity, and expense.
@Toastmaster_5000
@Toastmaster_5000 9 жыл бұрын
***** Was every gear on a torque converter, or only first? If it was every gear, then I can see why nobody would care for that. I'm just suggesting only 1st gear, because for most cars the only reason for 1st is to get moving, but it's otherwise all it does is burn the clutch.
@Toastmaster_5000
@Toastmaster_5000 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, I can definitely see why an automatic transmission that doesn't change it's own gears wouldn't sell well. That's like buying a segway where you have to do all the balancing yourself, when you could just get a unicycle instead. Anyway, if you drive something fast and sporty then having a normal 1st gear seems to be a better idea. But for the average commuter (especially those who get in stop-and-go traffic), having a torque converter on 1st gear would be great. It would also be great for people who haul heavy stuff.
@JonOlaivar
@JonOlaivar 7 жыл бұрын
I know, right! I'm sure it's possible, and I've been wondering this for years. It'd be on the engine side of the clutch, and the torque converter clutch could lock after the car starts moving.

@Plur307
@Plur307 8 жыл бұрын
I think the SI and Type R have always been about being fun to drive more than being the "fastest". Yes a dct is faster, but so much of the joy of driving is lost. In my opinion an old school Miata with only about 150 hp is more fun on a curvy mountain road than a modern car with all the dct, and stabilization wizardry. Sure the Miata is slower, but my smile is bigger driving something like that.

Great review! But I absolutely hate the car, for the 36G-40G price range you can get the Infiniti Q50, the car looks better has a SEXY nice interior and its faster. I guess it would make more sense if you just had a base ILX that you paid exactly 28-30 on but I cannot justify spending 36G on an ILX why not just get the TLX or Q50? And me being a performance person I can't justify spending 36G on the ILX when the Civic Si has the same engine and is also faster and lighter. I don't know man I must really been hating on Acura lately, The only car that looks SEXY and is what Honda should be all about is that NSX.

What do you think is the better overall car? 2016 Acura ILX or VW GTI? I know VW has that emission scandal going on and I'm hoping the 2.0t gas engine isn't affected.

The GTI may have a cam recall going on at the moment, something with there 2.0's and vacuum assist failing. I'm sure Humble Mechanic has more on this.

Will that transmission fit in a Civic? I'd love to build a dual-clutch turbo civic w/paddle shifter. Do you think that transmission could handle 650hp +maybe? I'm getting too crippled to handle clutch now😔. All my cars have been standards accept my newest 2016 ctv 2.4 CR-V. But it's growing on me with awd but I haven't hit VTEC yet. The bad rap on the CTV has me scared to try.

People who own this car probably have a doubt with the reliability of a torque-converter dual-clutch automatic transmission, thanks to the electronics. The 2016 ILX is basically a heavy Civic Si with the dual-clutch transmission, since Acura no longer offers a manual transmission in their lineup.

Jason, what do you think about "redline a day keeps the mechanic away"? Is it reasonable or just a bullsh*t?

I think preventative maintenance isn't as simple as a single sentence. I'd also just recommend buying top tier fuel and/or cars with at least some port injection if you're goal is to prevent carbon build-up.
@jerm1027
@jerm1027 9 жыл бұрын
+Matej Moržan I'd wager that depends on the car. Something like a corolla the redlining would probably do more harm than good because that car is designed as a point A to point B car. But if you have a sports car, I believe there is some merit since those cars are designed to be driven hard. I wouldn't go as far as saying once a day, maybe like once a week work hard. Not necessarily redline either, but get higher up in the rev range - enough to to activate whatever cam timings (VTEC in my case) or other high-power settings the car has. Also, Seafoam (could try others, but Seafoam is proven to work) helps every few thousand miles to clean and reduce carbon build up. I also use the cheapest tier-1 gas in my area, which is Shell. I have a buddy who swears by 76.
