I really appreciate you showing the chaotic side of knitting and the results of stress or hurrying..I feel like the internet is filled with 'perfect' and fast knitting projects and make it out like everything is easy and fast. I love to see your real experiences and how you brainstorm new ideas. I'm so looking forward to seeing the end piece over the next week 😊

What I would do with the white, is carry the white over with the blue row. Example, carry the white by giving it a twist with the blue at the point as if you were using it for the pattern. Also, you shouldn't carry wool more than 3 or 4 stitches along the back if possible...
@janetsears66732 жыл бұрын
Forget the pattern - knit the sweater in the round! Ends taken care of. No extra rows. No headaches. Knitting colorwork in the flat is the idea of some sewist that did not think beginning knitter's wanted to knit in the round. 😉 I do enjoy your content - keep up the good work. You will persevere. Next project suggestion - do knit this sweater in the round.

If the length of the floats is bothering you Armenian Knitting and ladderback jacquard are two different techniques that could be used for managing floats but without making the knitted object too stiff
@sleepisabella2 жыл бұрын
A beautiful piece of work. When carrying the yarn across the back, just lift the white up and down as you knit across catching it in about every 4th stitch. There are tutorials on KZbin for this. So much easier than having great lengths that catch on everything. Hopefully this made sense. Regards from Australia. Merry Christmas

Wow, what are the odds that sweater would be put up for sale and you'd see it (and buy it!) right after casting on? How cool! Looking forward to seeing how it differs to how you are knitting it up. Such a cute pattern, too! I'm planning to be brave this next year and maybe cast on my first sweater once I find a pattern I like the look of and feel comfortable and confident I can manage making it! Your channel always gives me a confidence boost in my own knitting skills.....somehow...?

After years of just knitting beanies and toys I decided to challenge myself to knit a jumper (sweater). And I loved it so much I knitted two more jumpers, a vest, and three summer tops! I learned so much with the jumpers and it built my confidence so much, definitely give it a go next year, you'll be so glad you did!!

Great sweater! I'm also an engineer that loves to knit. I tend to make up my own designs instead of working from patterns, which means I tend to invent my own ways of doing things because I don't know what terms to look them up by. That being said, this is how I would deal with the odd-number-of-plain-rows issue: Row 1 (blue on left, white on right from RS): (WS row) purl with blue until you get to a stitch that should be white, slip 1, repeat to end. Row 2 (both colors on right from RS): (RS row) knit with blue until you get to white stitch, k1 white, k (previously slipped) stitch white then pass that stitch back over to the left needle and knit it again with blue, k1 white, repeat to end Row 3 (both colors on left from RS): (WS row) Work as in pattern instructions (purl blue until you get to a stitch that should be white, p1 white, repeat until end) Have you done mosaic knitting before? It's colorwork that you work one color at a time, using slip stitches to put certain stitches "on hold" until the other color gets worked. The designs aren't really my thing, but I've found the technique useful enough in other contexts that I think it's worth learning even if you don't love the look of it.
@jeanettebelle22242 жыл бұрын
What I do with long floats is to ignore them when I make them in the row BUT catch them as I knit the second row. This way I can see where/when I should pull them up into the catching stitch of that second row. And I go up a needle size when I do stranded work to help with the tension.

You have encouraged me to pick up my needles and hooks again. I haven't kni or crocheted anything since the births if my girls. They are now 29 and 31. I think I am overdue. I am not in shape to pick up a vintage pattern yet. Give me a few projects to get my skills back up to speed. Thank you. You really are inspiring.😊
@jeanscully85112 жыл бұрын
Hi there! That is an astonishing coincidence! I will be very interested to see how the original piece was done. May I make a suggestion that might improve your tension and lessen puckering? I think your floats are a bit too long. Generally you shouldn't be carrying yarn for more than 3 stitches, 5 at the max. With floats that long, it's also almost inevitable that they're going to catch on your jewelry or fingers or barrettes as you're pulling it over your head. It also neatens up the appearance of the back. So I would catch the yarn every 3 stitches or so. Now, this can sometimes cause the yarn being carried (the white) to peek through the blue; in that case, I'd use the Ladder Back Jacquard technique. This is a way to catch floats so they don't peek through. It's often abbreviated LBJ. There are a bunch of instruction videos on YT on how to do it, but I really like Suzanne Bryan because her videos assume you're starting from zero knowledge, so she explains everything really clearly! I have been watching your channel for quite a few months now, and I really appreciate all the time an effort you put into your crafts, and your willingness to tackle even really complicated patterns with minimal instructions. It's very inspiring!

Hi! I love what you make. It´s always so pretty and elegant. I am a knitter too and maybe I have some tips of you want to do colorwork again. Catch the floats even if you´re not knitting with that color in that row. That way your yarn will be where you need it. And on the sides you can twist the yarn so it carries up along the edge. Have a merry craftmas x
@matildas31772 жыл бұрын
I was just about to comment this. I just twist the yarns towards me every three or four stitches and that keeps them both running along smoothly for when I next need the other colour, as well as giving the garment an extra layer of warmth from the dual threads.
@sonjahavukainen1859 Жыл бұрын
I was also going to comment the same thing! And one thing to maybe look at is yarn dominance. So when you do color work, the yarn that is closer to work or "under" is dominant and will show up more and the yarn that is farther from the work is going to "hide" more. So if you want your motifs to pop up, always take the yarn of the motif under and the base colour over 😊

Hi! Why are you not bringing the white back on the next row to get it back to the right side? You don't need to have it showing on the front if you catch it behind a blue stitch.
@chantalsutherland46292 жыл бұрын
If you catch your floats with the white yarn you can move it back to the other side. Extra benefit is your sweater will be even warmer as it ends up being double layered.

What a coincidence! Can I see that they only used 2 rows for the white colour work? So I guess they didn’t use Swiss darning/copystitch….or bobbins for the white work? I am so intrigued to see the inside of that vintage sweater…. Btw I finished my 60s vintage sweater just in time for Christmas last year and didn’t have time to weave any ends in - when I wore it no one was the wiser of the mess going on the inside!

I was thinking perhaps for a row where your two colors are on opposite ends, you could do the equivalent of mosaic knitting in opposite directions and slip the stitches of the other color as you work across. Hope this makes sense, but at least in my head it seems like it would work - down side is you'd be working across the same row twice.

Would knitting the white stars intarsia be more or less annoying was what came to my mind haha. Carrying the white up the piece as vertical 'floats' for each star row rather than normal fairisle floats and ends to weave?
@alannahwray89842 жыл бұрын
Maximizing self care had me rolling. With flat color work like that, would you not just carry the colors across the row and trap the floats every 5ish or so stitches? Then your colors are always on the same side. That's what I was taught for stranded color work when there are long stretches with one color. Or is there some still yet discovered vintage black magic that would make this make sense?

Wait, I don't understand what happened with the second ball of white. The way I'm thinking, one ball would go to the left, right, and end at left, and the other ball would go right, left, and end at right? Because the white "dots" are three rows each, right? What am I missing? This is hurting my brain, why is this so complicated?? 😭
@Kenji1234Animelover2 жыл бұрын
They both started on the left. Since there are 3 rows of blue in between the full pattern repeat is 6 rows. So you'll always start the diamonds on the left.

Such a cute, wintery pattern! I have no evidence, yet I suspect some 1950s hand-knitters would have had cute little even length ties at the seams, instead of weaving in all the color work ends. I was watching a public television knitting podcast, and it was mentioned that early fair isle knitters didn't always weave in ends, either. Perhaps, if you will be wearing it over a shirt or camisole, it wouldn't matter to have these little ties - especially if you plan on owning it for years and only you will know. Do you think there is any truth in knitters of the past not weaving in all ends at the seams? Did the one you found online have the ends tied off or woven in?
@hjkahvedjian46282 жыл бұрын
In my early knitting days, I hated all the ends and was going to do whatever worked most easily, right or wrong 😂 With a color work hat, I remember just weaving the ends into the seam. It held up pretty well, even if the seam was kind of bulky. The tightness of the seam made it so that a small length was ok to secure each end. I am looking forward to your solutions - and seeing that fun bonnet!

I don't know enough about knitting, what happens with all the small sections on the back where the yarn has been carried over the blue?? Do you have to cut and weave in ALL of those? I THINK you were talking about weaving in only the longest ones that go all the way across. If you just leave the carried over yarn on the back, how does it not get snagged when worn??

To me it’s a bit strange that a ski sweater isn’t double sided, it would have made so much more sense not only warmth wise but also to avoid the messy inside. Personally I would have chosen a natural wool that would have made the sweater water repellent. But that is just my preference… that project looks fun anyways :)

It doesn’t have a collar but I’m sure that you could alter it to have one. I’ve sent you an Instagram DM about how best to send you a copy of the pattern.
