Motor craft, mopar, Toyota, Honda vs the fram Endurance, AMS and Wix XP. AMS and Wix xp would be an interesting one since AMS sells Wix xp on their website and use it for their budget friendly oil change kit. I was comparing fram endurance ($12) vs motorcraft ($8) and I settled with motorcraft cause the ports were much bigger. I had fram synthetic on my truck and I notice on cold start I there was a slight rattle. Now that I’m running the OEM motorcraft filter it’s smooth and quiet on cold start.

I place 10 long rare earth magnets on the outside of my oil filter housing. Very strong magnets. Then when I cut the top off and remove the filter media you can see where the magnets have collected all the metal parts that would normally be caught by the filter media. Pretty impressive actually. And the end result is my oil is overall cleaner when it drains out. But I still change the filter and oil every 3000 miles. Using this method my engines have lasted forever pretty much. Just a thought anyway.

I'm trying to answer the question, "which oil filter will make my engine last the longest?", and I'm not sure the video answers this question. Or maybe I'm not even asking the right question? For example, a fleet management company is going to ask the question, "how do I minimize my maintenance costs without impacting the eventual resale value of my vehicles?" This video focuses on the engineering question much more than macroeconomics. If I don't change my oil frequently enough, then I can see where the dirt capacity would be an issue. But, if I change my oil at regular intervals, then dirt capacity probably isn't going to be a problem. So then you get to the issue, which is more important - filtering performance or flow restriction? Obviously the best filtering capacity isn't going to do you much good if there isn't enough oil flow, so there is a tradeoff there. If the bypass valve opens up (when you put your foot on the gas), as was simulated in your video by adjusting the flow rate, that requires more investigation! You want that valve to open up if the pressure differential is too great, but you interestingly pointed out that it's not happening with the cheaper filters. That would seem to be a defective design to me that would be important to drivers who have a habit of heavy accelerations.. On the other hand, if you don't have a lead foot, then it probably doesn't matter to the average grandma on the road that never causes the bypass valve to open up. With regards to filtering performance, that's directly related to engine wear, but it's not going to matter much if you change your oil frequently, thus reducing the buildup of small particles in the oil. With all that said, it certainly looks like you get what you pay for with the Fram filters. But in the long run, I suspect the frequency of the oil change is much more critical to engine life than how much you spend on the oil filter. With some car owners, oil and filter selection is an emotional issue, especially for sports car owners. They want only the very best for their "baby", and marketing expensive filters capitalizes on this. After all, for the oil and filter manufactures, it's all about making money. If some shmuck wants to spend triple the normal amount of money on a filter that only provides a marginal improvement in performance, and there is a significant amount of those schmucks out there, then sell such a filter! When I watch this video, I'm also asking the question, "how much engine life is enough"? People who keep their car for a short time could care less, while those who keep their cars forever probably care much more about engine life. But even people who plan to keep their car forever should realize that 99.9% of the cars on the road have less than 300,000 miles on them, because other factors such as accidents, transmission failures, parts availability, etc., limit the useful life of any vehicle. So if you're spending too much money on expensive oil filters trying to make your engine last forever, it may not be money well spent. But I really enjoyed your video, and all the great engineering facts!

I've always used the FRAM Ultra in my Acura TL-S and it has gotten my engine to 343k miles no problem. Despite not having the best differential pressure, the FRAM Ultra is certainly good enough for the average car, and this is coming from someone who lives in freezing Wisconsin winters. Add in its great construction, excellent filtration capabilities, wide availability, and $9 price tag, I can't recommend it enough. Although, I think for only an extra $3, I'm going to upgrade to the Purolator Boss as it has proven to be a clear winner in every aspect compared to the Ultra. Thank you so much for this video, I've been waiting for a scientific approach on oil filters like this for a long time. I can't wait to see additional tests and where your channel goes in the future. @@ChrisPatrick-q6k you’re right, and this is an old comment, but over time I did more research and found Purolator is kind of a sketchy brand who doesn’t fully disclose the filtration capabilities of all their filters. If you read the fine print and visit their website, only a few of their filters are rated down to 20 microns, and the rest are not. I also discovered the old FRAM Ultra design was renamed the Titanium, and the new Ultra is a redesigned and slightly downgraded filter. The new Ultra has worked just fine the last year or 2, however the old Ultra was proven in multiple tests and studies to be the best filter on the market. So I now use the Titanium filters (old Ultra). However again, I heard rumors they might redesign the Titanium as well. So I bought a dozen filters to last me the next 5-10 years.

I've been using Fram for as long as I remember and I haven't had any issues with my car. A lot of people say that Fram is garbage and use thin paper, but what I don't understand is...Fram has been making oil filters since 1932 or maybe 1934 and they're still in business. If they made cheap and crap oil filters, I'm sure they would've been out of business by now.

Huge congrats on being the first group to actually test filters instead of just cutting them open. Some suggestions, the ranking system should be updated to be weighted based on your thoughts (or even better a web app/Google sheet that lets users pick their weights) and more importantly the rankings don't take into account absolute performance. Eg. 0.1 psi at max flow is negligible/within error and no filter would have 1st place hot/cold flows and dead last filtration, but would somehow place mid-pack. Would be best to do something like standard deviations away and score filters on that metric. Thanks and keep up the good work, at least it's just data and not rebuilding a rig this time!

Outstanding comparison, thanks for sharing! Glad to see that the Fram Ultra isn't nearly as restrictive as many claim, it actually seems to be a very solid filter for the price. The biggest thing I don't like about the Fram filters I've seen is that the end of the filter isn't covered, so random debris could potentially end up in the clean side of the filter and go straight into the engine. I don't think using filters that are shipped and stored open to the atmosphere is the best idea and it couldn't cost that much to cover the end or just seal the entire filter in plastic wrap.
@Jimmy-sj9ny
@Jimmy-sj9ny Жыл бұрын
A filter is going to collect up to 10-15 grams of "debris" from inside your engine. A few specks of dust possibly entering a boxed filter is literally nothing in comparison. The plastic cover on the bottom of filters is mostly done in Asian countries like Korea and Japan that tend to be more fixated on cleanliness that the US is. Those countries also have a large number of people wearing surgical masks when they are in public.
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 Жыл бұрын
@@Jimmy-sj9ny Only difference is the debris that the filter catches while in use stays on the dirty side and no large debris is allowed through the filter to the clean side. If an ant or something that size happened to get into the big hole in the center of the filter, it would go directly into the engine and very likely clog an oil supply hole, piston cooling jet, interfere with the VVT system, etc and cause major damage.
@Jimmy-sj9ny
@Jimmy-sj9ny Жыл бұрын
@@averyalexander2303 Sure, but an engine has particles of metal and other debris that are gonna get in the oil. Particles of dust that might get in the filter are going to be largely organic and more or less harmless to an engine. Decades ago, filters were sold to mechanics in cases of 12 and they weren't even in individual boxes. When I was in high school, I had to stack filters on the shelf in the bay area of an Exxon station. Nobody ever said: "you're endangering my car because the filters aren't boxed." Some mechanics had a habit of blowing compressed air to get debris off filters and others didn't. But, either way, it is a VERY small risk to an engine.

Fantastic video, thank you for making these. I would like to ask for the test dust to be reduced below 20 microns. Large particles cannot fit so are not as much of a problem.
@ohboy2592

That makes sense because most good filters capture 98*% of particles 20 microns and bigger. In reality though you can filter much smaller than that and still maintain great oil flow right now especially in colder climates.

You should test the Mopar MO-339 vs the MO-899. Both of these filters are for the same engine, a 5.7 L hemi V8. From what I understand the oil filter was halved in size to fit the new rack and pinion electric steering rack in 2013 and the 339 is laughably small for the displacement of the engine. I always felt that it was undersized and with the cam and roller bearing issues that plague these engines, I’m wondering if the smaller filter is to blame for lack of oil delivery. I’d like to know if the smaller filter is up to the task of the once much larger filter.

Wix says it's rated at 95% @ 20u. It would also be great to see a Motorcraft, AC/Delco and Bosch tested as well. Keep up the great work.

@@ohboy2592 Sorry, but that is completely incorrect. I don't know where you heard that, but it is very well established by all the major industrial filtration companies (Donaldson, Parker, Fleetguard, etc) that micro glass fiber can achieve the highest efficiency with a full flow filter. You aren't going to see cellulose oil filters exceeding about 99% @ 30microns. Glass fiber can get to 99% @20micron without being too restrictive for most automotive engines.

One thing to take into account when measuring capacity is the fact that the ones that filted best, will often clog the fastest. That mkes the purolator boss even more impressive as it not only had fantastic filtering ability, but also a huge capacity.

Exactly at what pressure does the bypass open on these filters? I really think people freak out about "unfiltered oil" but the reality is a ton of oil gets circulated unfiltered when cold or at very high pressures, etc. Dirty oil is a minor issue, no oil is a game ender.

I love the oil filter series. Learned a lot. I love to see how Toyota, Honda, and any other OEM filter performs. I cannot find any filter, flow or filtration data for Honda or Toyota oil filters. I did notice that my Honda CRV runs better with a Honda filter. I assume it’s a less restrictive filter. Cannot find any data on them though. Would you guys be willing to run Honda and Toyota filters through your testing set up? I think a lot of people would appreciate it.

Fram are probably fine if you get a good one. The last time I used Fram was years ago when I put one on my Alfa Romeo and filter had a faulty anti-drainback valve. Large delay in getting oil pressure on startup. Having a decent oil pressure gauge helped me quickly see the problem, perhaps some people wouldn't have noticed. Changed the filter and never used Fram again.

I appreciate the detailed testing of these oil filters but the bottom line as a DIY mechanic changing oil for over 40 years in dozens of vehicles is that it's the frequency of changing oil and filter NOT necessarily the brand that protects your engine. I use Fram and all other brand and generic names (like Walmart) whatever is on sale. Change around every 5000 miles more or less. Never had an oil related problem and I keep my cars for a long time. I have switched over to full synthetic oil since the price is not much different.
